Q: Insane? Psychopaths? Sociopaths?

Very few serial killers suffer from mental illnesses to such a

debilitating extent that they are considered to be insane by the
criminal justice system

To be classified legally insane, an individual must be unable to

Most serial killers are aware of illegality of murder while they are
in the process of killing their victims

Desire and compulsion to kill causes them to ignore criminal law

Q: Insane? Psychopaths? Sociopaths?

Disregard for laws and social morals
Disregard for the rights of others
Failure to feel remorse or guilt

Warm Up
Wednesday| November 16, 2016
What is the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath?
What are the four MAJOR ways we can classify serial killers?
A serial killer overpowers his victims and kills them in a frenzied manner
(most likely by using a random weapon they find in their immediate
environment that they have easy access to). He then leaves the victim's
body out in the open without trying to hide it. He can best be classified as
what type of serial killer? Why?
A serial killer moves from place to place to avoid suspicion. She could
best be described as what type of serial killer? Why?
What is the MacDonald Triad?

Classification?
Edmond Kempter:
He solely targeted young female hitchhikers during his killing spree, luring them
into his vehicle and driving them to quiet areas where he would murder them
before taking their corpses back to his home to be violated and desecrated, with
Kemper often keeping the severed heads of his victims for several days before
disposal. He then murdered his mother and one of her friends before turning
himself into the authorities. He was found sane and guilty at his trial in 1973, and
requested the death penalty for his crimes, however, capital punishment was
temporarily suspended in California and he instead received eight life sentences.
Since then, Kemper has been incarcerated in the California Medical Facility.

Kemper is known for his large stature and high intelligence, standing 6-foot-9inches (2.06 m) tall, weighing over 250 lbs (114 kg) and having a reported IQ of

M.O., Signatures, & Staging

Q: What is the Modus Operandi?

Object - kind of property taken, such as bras and panties
Time - time of day or night, weekdays, non-work days, holidays (when people
would not miss the perpetrator at work)
Style - the description the criminal gives the victim to gain entrance (plumber,
cable TV repairman)
Tale - any disclosure the criminal makes as to his business/purpose
Pals - any co-conspirators
Transport - what type of vehicle was used in connection with the crime
Trademark - any unusual act committed by the suspect while in the commission
of the crime (i.e. poisoning the cat, eating at the scene after murdering the
grandmother)

Q: What are Signatures?

Signature: the murderer's psychological calling

card
Unusual characteristics of a murder that are

repeated at several crime scenes

Example: intentionally displaying victims in a
spread-eagle position.
This behavior reinforces the perpetrators
underlying psychological needs.

Q: What are Signatures?

Signatures may include:

posing the victims (post death)

concealing victims

using the same type of weapon

using the same method of killing
mutilating all the victims in the same manner
Signatures can sometimes be souvenirs

Modus Operandi or Signature?

Two murderers both burn their victims by dousing them with
gasoline.

The first murderer does so

as an anger-retaliatory act
at each scene.

The second murderer douses

This is a signature
behavior.

This murderer does so to

the victim with gasoline to

cover up the crime.
evade detection.
This therefore is a

precautionary act, and as such

is a modus operandi behavior.

Q: What is staging?
Staging: occurs when someone purposely alters
the crime scene prior to the arrival of the police
Two reasons:
Direct the investigation away from the most
logical suspect
Protect the victim or victims family

Red Flags: inconsistencies at a staged crime

scene

3. Be prepared to discuss

Example 1

Missionary

Joseph Paul Franklin, killed as many as 12 young black

males all of whom had white female companions. He
called the mixed-race couples, MRCs. He also
attempted the assassination of Hustler publisher,
Larry Flynt and his attorney, due to the fact the
magazine had published a spread denoting interracial
sex.
Despite this apparent mission against inter-racial
relationships, Joseph Franklin claimed after trial that
his only regret was that killing jews was illegal.

Example 2

Hedonist
Gain killer

Doretha Puente
In the 1980s, Puente ran a boarding house in
Sacramento, California, and cashed the Social
Security checks of her elderly and mentally
disabled boarders. Those who complained were
killed and buried in her yard. Seven bodies were
eventually found, Puente was charged with nine
murders, but convicted for only three. The trial was
split, with several witnesses brought in to suggest
what a warm person the little old lady was.

Nature and MO
Vampire, Cannibal
Richard Chase- He started out by killing and disemboweling rabbits,
which he then ate raw, but moved on to birds, cats, dogs, and,
eventually, human beings. Despite the fact that Chase had freely
admitted to eating raw rabbits while he was committed, had
called a family whose dog he killed to tell them what he had done,
and his mother had seen him rip open and devour a dead cat, he
was left to his own devices. He started out with a drive-by
shooting. From there, he murdered a pregnant woman, had sex
with her corpse, and ate part of the body. Finally, he killed a man, a
woman, and two children, had sex with the woman's dead body,
and again fed on the corpses. After the police arrested Chase,
they found blood splattered across almost EVERYTHING in his
apartment and the brain of the 22-month-old child that Chase had
killed was found in a Tupperware dish.

Example 3

Example 4

Thrill Seeker

Carl Panzram was a misanthrope who committed evil for evil's sake.
In fact, just before he was executed, he said,
I wish the entire human race had one neck and I had my hands
around it!
Those words were in keeping with the life he lived. Panzram was an
extremely active career criminal, a prolific arsonist who particularly
enjoyed torching churches, a thief's thief, and a habitual rapist who
claimed to have violated a thousand men.

Example 5 Disorganized
Offender committed first murder at the age of 14. The
victim picked him up outside town and drove him
into the woods for sex. Afterward, offender got
nervous and ran the man down with his own car. It
was something that just happened. He had an
abusive father and a grandmother who called him
the Devils Child. Offender found to have an IQ of 75.

Q: Are serialists born or made?

Three theories based on childhood
a. Theory One: The compulsion (need) to kill may be the
result of trauma to the brain
b. Theory Two: The compulsion to kill is genetic. A
mutation in the DNA happens that puts people on the
homicidal path.
c. Theory Three: The compulsion is a result of something
dreadful that happened to the child during childhood
Commonality: All theories believe that serial killers

begin to show signs in childhood

Q: Are serialists born or made?

Nature = traits, abilities and
capacities that are inherited
from ones parents
Produced by maturation
(the predetermined
unfolding of genetic
information)

Q: Are serialists born or made?

Nurture = the environmental
influences that shape behavior
Influences may be
Biological
Social
Societal factors
