1 La llegada (COMIENZO DEL DISCO #1)

Desde su ventanilla, Luis Prez observa entusiasmado cmo el avin
inicia el descenso en el aeropuerto de Miami. Decidi realizar este viaje
para perfeccionar sus conocimientos de ingls, familiarizarse con las
costumbres del pas y visitar a su primo Manuel.
Ya tiene en mano su pasaporte, y por ser Espaa parte de la Unin Europea, no precisa visa de entrada. Ahora la azafata le entrega una tarjeta que
debe rellenar.Poco despus, en el edificio del aeropuerto, pasa control de

Looking out the plane window, Luis Prez is excited as the airplane
begins its descent to the Miami airport. He decided to make the trip
to improve his English fluency, get to know the customs of the
country, and to visit his cousin Manuel.
In hand he has his passport, and as Spain is part of the European
Union, he does not need an entry visa. Now the flight attendant gives
him a card he must fill out. A bit later, at the airport building, he is
about to pass through passport control where an official asks him these

Para Luis representa toda una novedad entrar a una farmacia
norte-americana. Parece como si all hubiera de todo lo que se puede
necesitar en esta vida, desde aspirinas hasta un helado.
As es, adems de los medicamentos que se despachan con receta, en el
mostrador y en las estanteras hay diversos medicamentos de uso corriente,
como aspirinas, tabletas para dormir, antispticos, tiritas y vendas.
Tambin hay una enorme variedad de golosinas: chocolates, pastillas,
caramelos, chicles en todas las formas, sabores y colores. Si se
tiene la desgracia de que se rompa una media, all encontrar otro par
que la reemplace. Jabones, pinturas, pegamentos, artculos de tocador .
En fin, todo lo que uno pueda imaginarse y todo de gran utilidad.
Luis encuentra enseguida sus aspirinas y, aunque desayun opparamente, cree que un helado le vendr muy bien para hacer frente al
calor. Se sienta en las altas banquetas que estn ante el mostrador
donde un amable mesera lo atiende.

Going into an American pharmacy is something completely new for
Luis. It seems like it has everything you might need for the rest of your
life, from aspirin to ice cream.
That is the way it is. Besides the medicines sold by prescription,

sleeping tablets, antiseptics, band aids and bandages. There is also an
enormous variety of sweets: chocolates, candies, bon bons, gums in all sorts of

25 Un sueo hecho realidad

En 1790, cuando el presidente George Washington eligi a orillas del ro
Potomac el enclave de la futura capital de los flamantes Estados Unidos de
Amrica, no podra imaginarse la belleza y armona que llegara a alcan-zar
con los aos. Luis ha dejado su automvil en un estacionamiento para poder
participar en un recorrido con gua por la ciudad.

- Seoras y seores, estamos ahora en la Avenida Pensilvania, la va prin-cipal
de la ciudad. Al fondo, sobre aquella colina, se levanta el Capitolio. Al lado se
encuentra la famosa Biblioteca del Congreso. En sus escalinatas
impresionantes suele ser la toma de posesin de los nuevos presidentes. Nos
detendremos unos instantes ante la Casa Blanca, residencia del presi-dente.
Pueden descender para tomar fotografas. Por favor, apresrense. Como
pueden apreciar, los ministerios han sido construidos alrededor de la Casa
Blanca. Ahora nos dirigiremos al Museo Nacional, sede del Insti-tuto
Smithsoniano y, a continuacin, pasaremos ante el Museo de Bellas Artes, que
alberga valiosas colecciones. Por ltimo, para cerrar nuestra gira, nos
detendremos en el rea del Obelisco de Washington y el monu-mento a

25 A dream come true

In 1790, when President George Washington selected the banks of the
Potomac River for the future capital of the emerging United States of
America, he could not have imagined the beauty and harmony it would
come to have with the years. Luis has left his car in a parking lot in
order to go on a guided tour of the city.

- Ladies and gentlemen, we are now on Pennsylvania Avenue, the main
thoroughfare of the city. At the end on that hill theres the Capitol. Building.
Next door well find there the famous Library of Congress. On its impressive
stairs new Presidents usually take their oath of office.
Well stop a few moments at the White House, the residence of the Presi-dent.
You can get out and take photos. Please hurry. As you can see, the various
Departments have been built around the White House. Now well go to the
National Museum, the home of the Smithstonian Institute.
Then well pass the Museum of Fine Arts which houses valuable collections. Finally, to end our tour, well stop by the area of the Washington
Monument and the Lincoln Monument. You have a half hour for the
visit. Well regroup again here at eleven to return to the starting point.
This quick tour hasnt satisfied Luis very much. But it was the only
way to have at least a glimpse of the District of Columbia.

The next morning after breakfast, Luis leaves in his car for New York
City. There is the odd slow-down on the highway but the trip is quick.
Entering the city is impressive. Waves of cars cross along overpasses. Urban
trains filled with people arrive from the suburbs. Thousands and thousands
of people are hurrying along its broad streets.
There are sixteen million people in the metropolitan area.

The city is divided into five large burroughs: The Bronx,
Brooklyn, Queens,
Staten Island and the famous Manhattan. Henry recommended that
he leave his car in any parking lot and use the subway into the heart of
the city.

35 Getting ready for a train trip

These are the final hours in New York. Luis has spent some wonderful days
in the city, and it seems like he has always lived there. He has gone to
countless cultural and sports activities. He has visited the most important
places of interest, and he has had the chance to behave like just another New
Yorker.
Now Rose and Henry are going back and forth in the apartment taking
care of the details for the long trip by train to the West. Henry says it
seems like they were preparing a wagontrain for a trek to hostile and
unknown lands. Luis warns them that he cannot carry so many gifts,
since he will be returning to Spain by plane. Rose insists that he should
take something for the trip, even though the train will have a restaurant
and a cafeteria. Something from the house is always better.
When the time comes to close the suitcases, Luis and Henry have to
use all their strength to make the top meet with the bottom. They finally
man-age it when Rose sits decidedly on each one.

41 At the dock
Luis gets off the train and immediately finds himself at the dock. He
walks a bit lost among a number of piers and imposing warehouses
with cranes sticking out of their roofs. Finally a sign offers him the
solution to his adventure: he will take a trip on a recreation boat
through the river and the bay.

Por fin Luis cumple uno de sus sueos: ver de cerca la Estatua de la
Libertad. Un gua les explica la historia del monumento, regalo de
Francia a los Estados Unidos. Despus el grupo tiene la oportunidad de
subir al mirador, que ofrece una vista excelente de la ciudad. Por suerte,
hoy el aire es difano y puede verse hasta la montaa rusa de Coney
Island. Embarcados de nuevo, la mar comienza a agitarse. Luis

see the rollercoaster on Coney Island. On the boat again, the water

Fortunately, the earthquake was not serious. It was only a slight
tremor with six degrees on the Richter scale. Although Luis, not
experienced in such affairs, thought the earth was falling.
So after saying good-bye to Phil, Esther, Paul and Andy, his friends
