o Uses: Purgative, used as
pigment
Mastic (resin/ oleoresin)
o S/N: Pistacia lentiscus
o Const: Tri-, Tetra-, Penta- cyclic
triterpene acids and alochols,
monoterpenes hydrocarbons,
alpha pinene, beta myrcene and
camphene
o Uses: preparations of compound
mastic paint and a
microscopical mountant,
protective agent for stomach,
treatment for gastric ulcers.
Sandarac (resin)
o S/N: Tetraclinis articulata

o Const.: resin (labdane diterpene
acids/ grindelanes, and methyl),
bornyl acetate and alpha pinene
o Uses: treatment of bronchitis
and asthma, lotion for
dermatitis produce by poison

COLOPHONY (resin)
o Colophony (rosin) is the resin
remaining in the still after
removal of the volatile turpentin
oil from the oleoresin of species
of pinus.
o Chemical tests:
1.Dissolve Acetic
anhydride, on adding the
acid a purple colour,
rapidle changin to violet,
is produced.
2. Shake with light
petroleum and filter, the
petroleum layer becomes
emerald-green in colour,
a change whbich is due
to the formation of the
copper salt of abietic
acid.
