Introduction

In todays world, the amount of waste

produced is increasing immensely.
Landfills are also increasing in number.
Recycling, reusing and reducing or the
three Rs , are extremely important and
helpful to the environment. We need to
make sure that we do not deplete the
natural resources we have by overusing them. We must save something
for our future generations. By following
the 3Rs, we are doing the future
citizens good.

Justify the need to recycle

The amount of wastes produced
every day is around one or two bags.
If we consider a city of 50,000,
everyday around 50,000 to 1,00,000
bags of wastes are produced, most of
2

which are disposed off at the streets

due to lack of education on sanitation
and hygiene. Therefore I found that
we need to let people know that
recycling is a good practise and they
should do it.

Client
Right now I want to start small and
start by spreading awareness in the
students of our school. If this works
and makes people aware of their
surroundings, i can then try to
educate the others.

Analysis of primary research

I conducted a survey online using
google form and sent it to my friends.
3

I got a couple of responses. From the

response I took to consideration, I
found that the person I asked knew
about recycling and its causes but did
not have the resources to try to make
new objects from old ,discarded
materials. She said that recycling is a
way to make new materials from old
materials. Though she was aware,
she did not recycle much. I think it is
because recycling can be tedious job
and because she did not know how.

Analysis of secondary research

We were given a set of questions
from our teacher to answer based on
our opinion on recycling. They were

to test our understanding of

repurposing discarded materials.
To me, recycling means converting
discarded wastes into new, better
products. We should do this because
it is essential to make our
environment clean and to make sure
we have our resources in the future.

Polystyrenator
5

Because Styrofoam can't easily be

recycled, it often ends up in the trash.
But a group of middle school students
from Folsom, California, designed a
digester that uses bacteria to eat
Styrofoamand turns it into energy and
biodegradable plastic.
"It's a big problem in the world right
now," says 13-year-old Emily Miner, one
of the inventors of the tool, called the
Polystyrenator. "A lot of Styrofoam is
getting into waterways and affecting the
environment negatively. We all agreed
that it needs to be addressed."
The students dug through the latest
research, and combined what they found
6

into their own process. Miner and her

teammates hope to bring the
Polystyrenator to life. "It made me
realize that even though we're all very
young, it doesn't matter how young you
are," she says. "You can still make a
difference in the world."
After I read the entire article, I realized
that their idea, though noble, was hard
to achieve and also very expensive. It
would be hard installing such a
complicated device, and even more hard
making people understand and accept
such things. I also thought that to make
sure that recycling is a public issue and
not a personal one, we need to involve

and educate people about the problem

at hand.

Primary research
I conducted a survey to see how much people
know about recycling. I received a few
responses as well.

This is a response I got from a student in my

class. This is a screenshot of the questions I
asked them via google forms.

Secondary research
Factual questions asked.
1.
What is is recycling?
Recycling is the process of converting
waste materials into reusable objects.
2.

Why is it important to recycle?

Recycling helps us to convert our old

products into new useful products. It is
good for the environment. It helps us to
make use of waste products that cannot
be decomposed are are bad for the
environment if not destroyed.
3.

What can be done to encourage

people to recycle?
Drives,awareness camps, seminars, and
also education of people can help
15

encourage people to recycle by making

them aware of the effects of recycling
and the consequences that we may have
to face if we don't look after our
surroundings.
Conceptual question asked.
1.
How does reducing,reusing and
recycling help?
Reducing the amount of waste produced
reduces the effects that those wastes
may cause.such as plastic bags. If plastic
bags are banned or given at a cost, the
amount of plastic litter is reduced
causing less animal deaths caused by
suffocation or consumption.

16

2.

How can you reduce the

amount of waste produced at both

home and school?
We can reduce the amount of waste
produced by using reusable objects such
as mechanical pencils and refill pens
instead of wooden pencils or single use
pens. They are bad for the environment
and increase waste amounts. At home,
using reusable containers and avoiding
single use cutlery can helpful as that
would reduce non biodegradable waste
production considerably.
Debatable questions asked.
1.
Is it important to pay attention
to what is put in the recycle bin?

17

Yes. Only non- biodegradable waste

should be put in the recycle bin, with the
exception of paper. Even though paper is
a biodegradable substance,it should be
recycled as trees are cut to make paper.
Recycling paper is a way to reduce tree
depletion and reduce global warming
levels as well.

I have also found an article on the internet

regarding recycling.

18

19

This article is basically about how the author

thinks we can spread awareness about
recycling.
20

Design Brief
We basically need to find out the best,
most effective and easy to understand
way to recycle non-biodegradable
wastes in which everyone can get
involved. It should be simple and
should be able to work anywhere.
Conclusion
Recycling is a very important and
beneficial process that helps the
environment a lot. We all should learn
and also educate people of the effects
of recycling and ill-effects of
neglecting our surroundings.
