Health Issue

Health issues in Pakistan are administrated mainly in the private sector which accounts for
approximately 80% of all outpatient visits the public sector was until recently led by the ministry
of health which is the department for provision of medical services, responsible to frame the
health policies at a national level each of the four provinces of Pakistan has its respective health
department under the supervision of health minister of that province controlled by directors and
deputy directors.
we have a number of diseases in Pakistan which causes death including malaria, diarrhea, dengue
fever, tuberculosis, cancer , HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and last but not the least polio. these diseases
are controllable but sometimes it causes death because poor patients cannot afford expensive
medication.
There are countless hospitals in Pakistan but despite the death toll is increasing day by day .

Reasons
Expensive medicines hospitals were being supplied with expensive drugs the prescribed
medicine has to be given to most of the patients on a regular basis which is a tough task for a low
income man patients have to pay their private physician enormous amounts of money just to get
a check up. This is the reason why the majority of the people are left with poor medical services.
They have to stand in long queues to consult a government doctor and are offered poor medical
treatment.
Many Pakistani doctors choose to migrate to other countries contributing brain drain and
chronic skills shortage in country. according to survey there are over 17,000 doctors of Pakistani
origin. Pakistan is the fourth highest source of international medical graduate doctors in U.S.
migration of doctors revolves around the reasons of better structure of medical education, desire
for better income.
Thousands of doctors across Punjab working at public hospitals resigned from their positions

and many others went on strike after the provincial government failed to meet their demands for
better compensation. Hospitals throughout the province reported severe difficulties and even
deaths as a result of being desperately short staffed.
During late Jan 2012 ,a fake medicine crisis at the Punjab institute of cardiology (PIC) Pakistan
claimed the lives of over 100 heart patients according to various reports the incident involved
patients who had been receiving treatment at hospital the spurious medicine triggered a serious
adverse reaction by depositing itself in the bone marrow and ending the body\'s resistance.
according to sources, these medicines were also not being tested from the laboratories due to lack
of selling and supply of country\'s manufacturer medicines companies , thousand of the workers
have been rendered jobless.
In Pakistan major chunk of population is living below the poverty line in such scenario where
from food to petrol everywhere fire of inflation has engulfed the poor man, the recently price
hike in medicines has added another worry in the list of poor masses. recently the national and
international pharmaceutical companies knocked at the door of health ministry to raise the prices
where health ministry respond immediately without considering the impact of higher prices of
medicines on common masses. the increase will give the people more to criticize against the
ruling government in the backdrop of already ongoing corruption scandals.
Pakistan's health care system is inadequate , inefficient and expensive public sector along with a
mixed unregulated private sector these poor conditions in the health sector may be attributed to a
number of factors like poverty, malnutrition and unequal access to health facilities the poor in
Pakistan is not only deprived of financial resources but also lack access to secondary and tertiary
health care services. according to WHO international standards the ratio of doctors to nurses
should be 1:3 however this is reversed in the case of Pakistan ratio of doctors to nurses is 3:1 in
Pakistan according to PSLM as many as 77 percent households consult the private sector against
only 23 percent to the public sector. the health issues in Pakistan are rising on its peak because
lack of awareness, poverty and illiteracy. WHO sponsors programs to prevent and treat such
diseases.as we have number of hospitals Government and ministry of health needs to be
arranging , conducting health awareness programs and increased number of doctors so that
middle class man and a poor patient can visit to doctor easily. these sectors needs to be regulated
and monitored by Government.
The poor state of health in Pakistan is attributed to to the lack of access to basic health care
services, poverty, lack of health infrastructure and personnel, illiteracy, womens low status,
inadequate water supplies and sanitation. In the urban areas, access to health care clinics and
facilities is not a problem, though the general state and quality of public services is very poor.
On the other hand, in the rural areas, people live far from hospitals and basic health care units. It
is for this reason that most women give birth at home with the assistance of a midwife or lady
health worker. Illness pushes people into poverty through lost wages, high spending for treatment
and recurring treatment for their illnesses. One of the main causes of illness in the rural areas of
Pakistan is poor water and sanitation systems. Some studies indicate that a significant portion of
the rural poor incomes is spent on preventable common diseases linked to contaminated water

and unsanitary living conditions. Thus the severity of health-related poverty is closely reflected
in the countrys poor health indicators. Poverty is thus both a consequence and a cause of ill
health. According to official data, there are 127,859 doctors and 12,804 health facilities in the
country to cater for over 170 million people. In 2007 there were 85 physicians for every 100,000
persons in Pakistan.
In other words, one doctor for 1,225 people. There are only over 62,000 nurses all over Pakistan
who are supplemented with a strong force of 96,000 Lady Health Workers (primary health care
providers). According to the latest Ministry of Health Pakistan statistics, there were 13,937
health institutions in the country including 945 hospitals (with a total of 103,285 hospital beds),
4,755 dispensaries, 5,349 Basic Health Units (mostly in rural areas), 903 Mother and Child Care
Centers, 562 rural health centers and 290 TB centers.
According to the World Health Organization, Pakistans total health expenditures amounted to
3.9 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2005, and per capita health expenditures were
US$49. The government provided 24.4 percent of total health expenditures, with the remainder
being entirely private, out-of-pocket expenses.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a hospital

Advantages:
1. Choose Your Doctor
In the healthcare system we often have more flexibility in choosing a doctor as well as medical
facility. For patients that want the same doctor all the time, this can be a very important
advantage.
2. Shorter Wait Times
If people are having a surgery that is necessary but not life threatening, there are often long wait
times. In a private health insurance system the patient will often have shorter wait times because
the medical facility is less busy. And even if there are a lot of people waiting, you can often by
pass the line by paying a little bit extra for faster medical attention.
3. Improved Facilities
Unfortunately, because the public system is funded with government money it does not have
access to as much funds as the private sector one do. This means that public hospitals and health
care facilities are often overcrowded, and lacking certain comfort amenities. Private health care
facilities, on the other hand, are usually well maintained,
with private wards, private bathrooms, phones, TVs, and better tasting food.

4. Free of cost

Hospitals are free of cost that means a lot to all the poor people as they are cheaper than private
hospitals. They cannot turn away any patients because they treat all patients as equal citizens

Disadvantage:
The disadvantage of hospitals is that they are mostly overcrowded. They do have good facilities
but they sometimes may not have enough facilities for some medical emergency. Even there
services are questionable and they are not as professional as private hospitals.

Best Hospitals in Faisalabad:

Faisalabad as one of the biggest industrial cities in Pakistan, is generally known to have good
health facilities for its growing population. The industrial waste and smoke has given rise to
pollution in the city over the last two decades, but Government of Punjab and Local City
Government has taken steps to keep a check on it and have built modern and well-equipped
hospitals to deal with the emergencies.
