Question 3
a) A load of 80 MN was supported by a circular concrete column of 0.8 m in diameter at a
construction site. If the maximum allowable stress is 500 MPa and the modulus of elasticity

b) A compound assembly consists of a brass rod 25 mm in diameter and closely fitted by a steel
tube having an external diameter of 35 mm. The two materials are rigidly joined at their ends
and have a length of 1.5 m. An axial load of 45 kN is applied to the compound bar.
Determine the stresses in each material. For brass E = 100 GN/m2 and for steel E = 200
GN/m2.

Question 4
a) A force of 30 kN was applied by a punch during a manufacturing operation. If the diameter
of the punch was 40 mm and the material 3.2mm thick, determine the shear stress in the
material.
[5 marks]
b) The clevis pin assemblies shown in figure 4 uses a 10mm diameter pin and undergoes double
shear. If the shear stress in the pin must not exceed 40 MPa, determine the maximum force
that can be exerted on the pin.

c) An assembly component of mass 3.5 kg is attached to one end of a light inextensible string
while the other end is fixed to a point on a smooth horizontal table. If the length of the string
is 5.2 m and the component is moving in a circular path at a speed of 16 m/s, determine the

Question 5
a) The wheel base of an emergency vehicle shown in figure 5 is 2 m wide and is travelling
around a banked circular track of radius 80 m. The track is banked at 110 to the horizontal.
The coefficient of friction between the tractor wheels and the circular track is 0.4. The tractor
centre of gravity is 0.55 m from the surface measured normal to it. Determine:
i) The speed at which the tractor will skid

iii) The maximum safe speed at which the tractor can travel round the track.

b) In order to lift an assembly of 50 kg at a construction site with the aid of a lifting device, an
effort of 42 N was applied. When the assembly was raised a distance of 30 mm, the effort
moved through a distance of 0.5 m. Hence, calculate:
