The first is active safety, which involves preventing accidents before they occur, and the other is passive safety, which involves protecting vehicle occupants at the time of collision. In order to protect vehicle occupants in a collision, it is both important to keep damage to the cabin to a minimum, as well as to minimize the occurrence of secondary collisions caused by the movement of occupants within the cabin A body with a crash impact absorbing structure, seat belts, SRS airbags and so forth are employed in order to accomplish this. 1. CRASH IMPACT ABSORBING STRUCTURE (CAS) BODY As a result of absorbing and dispersing the force of impact of a collision through deformation of the front or rear portions of the vehicle body, and by providing a rigid cabin structure, the force of the impact transmitted to occupants is reduced while also minimizing deformation of the cabin. RZ ‘@ © Crashable zone Occupant protection zone Crashable zone 2. SEAT BELTS Seat belts are the primary means of restraining occupants. Wearing seat belts prevents occupants from being thrown out of the vehicle during a collision while also minimizing the occurrence of secondary collisions within the cabin. 3. SRS (SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM) AIRBAG The SRS airbags are designed to provide further protection to the driver and front passenger when added to the primary protection provided by the seat belts. In response to a severe frontal impact, the SRS airbags work together with the seat belts to prevent or reduce injury by inflating, in order to decrease the likelihood of the driver's or front passenger's head or face directly hitting the steering wheel or dashboard. Ever since the SRS airbag was provided on the driver's side for the first time in the 1989 Lexus S400, the number of vehicles equipped with SRS airbags has increased rapidly. oS WHAT ARE SRS AIRBAG? — The Need for Seat Belts and SRS Airbags THE NEED FOR SEAT BELTS AND SRS AIRBAGS This section illustrates why seat belts and the SRS airbags are so important in minimizing your risk of serious injury in the event of a frontal col When a vehicle collides with another vehicle or @ stationary object, it stops very quickly ~ but not immediately. For example, if a vehicle hits a fixed barrier in a 50 km/h (30 mph) frontal crash, it takes a little more than 1/10" of a second to come to a complete stop. A lot happens in that very short period of time. At the moment of impact, the front bumper stops moving but the rest of the vehicle is still traveling 50 km/h (30 mph). The vehicle begins absorbing energy and slows down as the front of the vehicle is progressively crushed. During the collision, the passenger compartment begins to slow down or decelerate but the occupants continue traveling forward at their original speed inside the passenger compartment. If the occupants are not wearing seat belts, they continue traveling at 50 km/h (30 mph) until they collide with the interior of the vehicle. In this particular example, the occupants would strike the interior traveling as fast as if they had fallen out of a third-storey window. If the occupants are wearing seat belts, they decelerate more gradually, thereby reducing the collision forces applied to their bodies. However, in a severe collision, they may still contact the interior of the vehicle, although with much less force than unrestrained occupants. ‘An SRS airbag helps to further reduce the potential for face and head contact with the vehicle's interior and absorb some of the deceleration force on the occupants. It is important to remember that there are two principal vehicle systems which absorb the collision forces acting on the occupants : the seat belt, which “links” the occupants to the vehicle's structure, enabling gradual deceleration, and the SRS airbag. OPERATION OF SRS AIRBAGS 1, OPERATION In a severe frontal impact, the SRS airbag system detects deceleration and the system triggers the airbag inflators. Then a chemical reaction in the inflators momentarily fills the bags nitrogen gas to help restrain the forward motion nontoxic of the occupants. Operation of SRS Airbags This helps to protect the head and face from impact with the steering wheel or dashboard. As the bags deflate, they continue to absorb energy. The entire process ~ inflation, protection, then deflation ~ takes place in less than @ second. Start of Deployment Full Deployment (NOTE During Protection End of Collision * + The SRS airbags are designed to inflate only ‘once. The passenger airbag is activated even with no passenger in the front seat. + When the airbags inflate, they produce a fairly loud noise and release some smoke along with the nitrogen gas. This is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. Be sure to wash off any residue as soon as possible to prevent minor skin irritation. + Deployment of the airbags happens in a fraction of a second, so the airbags must late with considerable force. While the system is designed to reduce serious injuries, it may also cause minor burns or abrasions and swellings. + Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel _ hub, dashboard) may be hot for several minutes, but the bags themselves will not be hot. + A crash severe enough to inflate the airbags | Id as the vehicle buckles. In vehicles with a passenger airbag the windshield may also be damaged by absorbing some of the force of the inflating irbag. may break the windshi WHAT ARE SRS AIRBAGS? — Operation of SRS Airbags o 2. THE SRS AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY... ‘The SRS airbags are designed to be activated in response to a severe frontal impact occurring within the shaded area between the arrows in the illustration below. The SRS airbags will deploy if the severity of the impact is above the designed threshold level, comparable to an approximate 20 = 23 kmjh (12 ~ 14 mph) collision when impacting straight into a fixed barrier that does not move or deform. If the severity of the impact is below the above threshold level, the SRS airbags may not deploy. However, this threshold velocity will be considerably higher if the vehicle strikes an object, such as a parked car or sign pole, which can move or deform on impact, or if it is involved in an underride collision (a collision in which the nose of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under, the bed of a truck). itis possible with collision severity at the marginal level of airbag sensor detection and activation that only one of your vehicle's two airbags will deploy. 3. THE SRS AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY... The SRS airbags are not designed to inflate if the car is subjected to a side or rear impact, if it rolls, over, or if it is involved in @ low-speed frontal collision. Vehicle roll-over Frontal collision at low speeds a CAUTION 1. CHILD RESTRAINT WHAT ARE SRS AIRBAGS? — Caution g iuowiuy back aT Do not use a rear-facing child restraint system in the front seat because the force of the rapid inflation of the passenger airbag may cause severe injury to the child. When u possible. 2. AVOID SITTING ON THE EDGE OF THE SEAT OR LEANING OVER THE DASHBOARD. 19 a forward-facing child restraint system in the front seat, the seat must be moved as far back as 3. DO NOT PUT OBJECTS ON OR IN FRONT OF AIRBAG HOUSINGS. Do not sit on the edge of the seat or lean over the dashboard when the vehicle is in use. The airbags inflate with considerable speed and force; you may be severely injured. Sit up straight and well back in the seat, and always use your seat belt. AUTON Aaa Failure to follow these instructions can result in severe injuries Do not put objects on or in front of the dashboard or steering wheel pad that houses the airbag system. They might restrict inflation or cause personal injury as they are projected rearward. Do not modify, remove or open any component or wiring, such as the steering wheel, column cover, front passenger airbag cover, front passenger airbag, airbag sensor assembly. Doing any of these may cause sudden SRS airbag inflation or disable the system, which could resutt in personal injury. For Driver (In Steering Wheel Pad) The inflator and bag are stored in the steering wheel pad and cannot be disassembled. The inflator contains a primer, igniter charge, gas generant, etc., and inflates the bag in a severe frontal collision. The bag is made of nylon with gum coating on the interior surface. ‘Also, there are 2 discharge holes provided behind the bag to quickly release the nitrogen gas after the bag has been deployed. Spiral Inflator cable Gas generant Primer Steering wheel pad Rap Igniter charge Steering wheel REFERENCE. In previous reference materials, the primer was referred to as the squib, b. For Front Passenger (in Passenger Side Dashboard) The inflator is comprised of a primer, igniter charge and gas generant. These components are completely sealed within a metal container. The bag is made of strong nylon cloth, and becomes inflated by the nitrogen gas generated by the inflator. The inflator and bag are integrated inside the case and airbag door, and located in the passenger side dashboard. The volume of the passenger side bag is 2 to 4 times greater than the driver side bag. Front Bag Airbag door Inflator Gas release holes i; Filter lgniter charge Primer Gas generant INFLATOR CAUTION Refer to pages 35 and E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Construction and Operation of Functional Parts OPERATION Operation of the inflator and bag is the same as for both the driver and front passenger sides. When the airbag sensor(s) goes on due to the deceleration force in a severe frontal collision, current flows to the primer causing it to be heated. The resulting heat ignites the igniting agent (contained in the primer) and the resultant fire spreads instantaneously to the igniter charge ‘and gas generant. The gas generant generates a large amount of nitrogen gas, which passes through filtering screens, is cooled, and then enters the bag. The bag is deployed instantaneously by the gas. it breaks the steering wheel pad or airbag door and inflates into the passenger compartment. The bag deflates rapidly after deployment as the gas escapes through discharge holes. This reduces the force of impact against the bag, and also ensures an adequate field of view. a. Most of the “smoke” that you see is talcum, which is used as a lubricant to help the bag deploy smoothly, and a sodium compound, which is a by-product of the chemical reaction Most of the residue consists of harmless sodium carbonate (Na:CO:). However, a tiny amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) may also be present, so be sure to wash off any residue as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of minor skin irritation. S E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Construction and Operation of Functional Parts 2. CENTER* AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY The center* airbag sensor assembly is mounted on the floor. It consists of a center* airbag sensor, safing sensor(s), diagnosis circuit and so forth. It receives signals from the airbag sensors, judges whether the airbag must be activated or not, and diagnoses malfunctions in the system. +: The sensor is called the “Center airbag sensor” when front airbag sensors are installed, and called the “airbag sensor" when front airbag sensors are not instelled. In the semiconductor type, this sensor detects the decleration rate. An ignition control and drive circuit judges whether or not the airbags are to be activated and activates the airbags based on the center airbag sensor signal. In the mechanical type, this sensor activates the airbag by detecting the deceleration rate. a. Semiconductor Type The semiconductor type sensor consists of a strain gauge and an integrated circuit. The sensor measures and converts the deceleration force into an electrical signal. The signal output changes linearly in accordance with deceleration rate. This, signal is then sent to the ignition control circuit, and is used to judge whether or not the airbags are to be activated. Deceleration force Mass — Strain gauge Integrated circuit REFERENCE Properties of the center airbag sensor vary according to the presence or absence of front airbag sensors. b. Mechanical Type The contacts of the sensor make contact and activate the airbags when the sensor is subjected to deceleration force above a predetermined level in a frontal collision. SAFING SENSOR There are several types of safing sensor, such as the mechanical type, in which contact points close according to mass, the mercury switch type ete. This sensor is provided so that the airbag is not activated by mistake when it is not required. This sensor is activated by a smaller deceleration force than that of activating the airbag. Both contacts touching \ ae Decoration = To primer Power source owe Decelaration<—] NOTE: Hf an except mercury switch type safing sensor is employed, the center airbag sensor assembly cannot be reused once the airbag has been deployed. This is because the large current flowing to the contact points when the airbag is deployed, erodes the contact surface of the points thus resulting in the risk of excessively large electrical resistance. " o E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Construction and Operation of Functional Parts IGNITION CONTROL AND DRIVE CIRCUIT (for semiconductor type center airbag sensor) The ignition control and drive circuit calculates the signal from the center airbag sensor. If the calculated value is larger than a predetermined value, it activates the primeris) to deploy the bagis). BACKUP POWER SOURCE The backup power source consists of a backup capacitor and a DC-DC converter. In case of a power system failure during a collision, the backup capacitor discharges and supplies electric power to the system. The DC-DC converter is a boosting transformer when the battery voltage drops below a certain level. CAUTION. Negative cable turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The supplemental restraint system is equipped with a back-up power source so that, if work is started within 90 seconds of disconnecting the ne, | from the battery, the airbags may deploy.) (+) terminal cable 12 DIAGNOSIS CIRCUIT This circuit constantly diagnoses the system for any malfunction. When a malfunction is detected, hts up the airbag warning light to alert the driver. MEMORY CIRCUIT When a malfunction is detected by the diagnosis circuit, it is coded and stored in this memory circuit. The code(s) can be retrieved later to identify the location of the malfunction and provide quicker troubleshooting. Depending on the model, this memory circuit is either the type which the memory contents are erased when power is interrupted, or the type which the memory contents are retained even if the power is interrupted, E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Construct 3. FRONT AIRBAG SENSORS {some models only) A front airbag sensor is mounted inside each of the front fenders*. The sensor unit is a mechanical type. When the sensor detects deceleration force above a predetermined limit in a frontal collision, the contacts in the sensor make contact, sending a signal to the center ail Jag Sensor assembly. The sensor cannot be disassembled, *This depends on the vehicle model. SRS airbag systems without front airbag sensors are commonly used in recent models. NOTE The front airbag sensors cannot be reused once the airbag has been deployed. This is because the large current that flowing to the contact points when the airbag is deployed, erodes the contact surface of the points thus resulting in the risk of excessively large electrical resistance. CONSTRUCTION The sensor unit consists of a housing, eccentric rotor, eccentric mass, fixed points, revolving points, etc. A resistor is fitted to the outside of the sensor unit. It is used in diagnosing opens and shorts in the front airbag sensor circuitry. Resistor (for self-diagnosis) a 1n and Operation of Functional Parts OPERATION Ordinarily, the eccentric rotors is in the state shown below (normal condition} due to the force of the coil spring. Therefore, the fixed points and revolving points do not make contact. When a frontal collision occurs, and if the deceleration rate, which acts on the eccentric mass, exceeds a predetermined level, the eccentric mass, the eccentric rotor, and revolving points turn to the left asa u {activated condition). This causes the revolving points to make contact with the fixed points, and the front airbag sensor goes on, t, creating the situation shown below Eccentric mass Stopper Coil spring load SN / Fixed point Revolving point Eccentric rotor /___ Revolving Fixed point “ Point Normal condition Deceleration \ Primer Terminals Terminals ‘Shorting spring plate 16 E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Construction and Operation of Functional Parts shorting spring plate automatically connects the terminals of the primer to make a closed circuit. Twintock completed OPERATION When the vehicle is involved in a frontal collision in the shaded area (Fig. 1) and the shock is larger than a predetermined level, the SRS is activated automatically. A safing sensor is designed to go on at a smaller deceleration rate than the airbag sensor(s). As illustrated in Fig. 2, ignition is caused when current flows to the primer, which happens when a safing sensor and the center airbag sensor and/or a front airbag sensors) go on simultaneously. When a deceleration force acts on the sensors, primers in the inflators ignite and generate gas. The gas discharging into the bags rapidly increases the pressure inside the bags, breaking open the steering wheel pad and airbag door. Bag inflation then ends, and the bags deflate as the gas is discharged through discharge holes at the bag’s rear or side, Fig. 1 NOTE SRS airbag systems do not operate when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. 18 E-TYPE SRS AIRBAG — Operation One Airbag Sensor Type Satin senect ON b. SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS — Type of Seat Belt Pretensioners Front seat outer belt with pretensioner Seat belt pretensioners are devices that improve the occupant restraining function of the seat belts. ‘Wearing seat belts prevents occupants from being thrown out of the vehicle during a collision while also reducing the chance of secondary collisions within the cabin, Seat belts do not completely immobilize the occupants in their seats. There is still a small amount of space between the seat belt and occupant. Consequently, even if seat belts are worn, occupants may still make contact with the interior of the vehicle during a severe collision, although with much less force than unrestrained occupants. Pretensioners operate during a severe frontal collision. As a result of the belt being retracted by @ certain amount before the occupant moves forward beyond the seat, the amount of forward movement of the occupant is reduced. The combined use of airbags and seat belts with pretensioners results in maximum protection of the driver and front passenger. Seat belt pretensioners are designed to operate only once. + When a seat belt pretensioner is activated, an operating noise may be heard and a small that a fire is occurring, + Seat belt pretensioners operate ‘occupant is not sitting in the seat. TYPE OF SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS Seat belt pretensioners are either an electrical type (E-type), which is incorporated in the SRS airbag system and activated by the center airbag sensor assembly, or a fully mechanical type (M-type), which has its own independent sensor. NOTE The fully mechanical type seat belt pretensioner is equipped with an dependent pretensioner sensor. For this jon, depending on the circumstances of the collision, the seat belt pretensioner may not operate when the airbag is deployed, and vice versa. The same applies between the right and left seat belt pretensioners. REFERENCE: Although the E-type was used initially, all seat belt pretensioners are of the M-type currently. 27 SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS — Construction and Function CONSTRUCTION AND FUNCTION The seat belt retractor with pretensioner consists of the pretensioner mechanism, retractor mechanism and ELR locking mechanism. GAS GENERATOR WITH PRETENSIONER SENSOR FOR M-TYPE Although the construction of the pretensioner sensor varies according to the model, the basic construction is the same as the M-type airbag sensor. It is composed of @ mass weight that detects deceleration force, a firing pin that ignites the primer, and so forth. The conditions for activation of the pretensioner are the same as for the airbag system. Bias spring Gas generant The firing pin is normally latched to the trigger shaft or the letch lever, thus preventing the firing pin from ejecting, When deceleration force resulting from a frontal collision exceeds a predetermined level, the movement of the mass exceeds the force of the bias spring. As a result, the firing pin is released from the trigger shaft or latch lever. The firing pin is then ejected by the force of the firing spring to ignite the primer.
