Instructional Analysis Context

We will be teaching a one hour and fifteen minute module on Grade Management for
EDUC204: Computer Technology and Instructional Media, an undergraduate, pre-service
teacher instructional technology class at Coastal Carolina University on October 24, 2016. The
purpose of this class is to teach students the technological skillsets with which to compile and
analyze grade data using Microsoft Excel. EDUC204 is a required class that is part of the
curriculum for the following undergraduate education programs: B.A. Elementary Education,
B.A. Early Childhood Education, B.A. Middle Level Education, B.S. Physical Education, B.A.
Special Education. Grade Management is being taught to students because evaluation is one of
the core responsibilities of a professional educator. As education shifts toward a data-driven
decision model, it becomes even more important for in-service teachers to understand basic
spreadsheet concepts, terminology and data analysis operations.
The instruction will take place in the Prince building, room 204. This room is a computer
lab that provides the following resources: a) Two projectors for presenting tutorials of the
content with visual and audio components; b) One computer per student with MS Excel
software to create and edit spreadsheets; c) A SMART Board with speakers and a projector.
Rationale
The rationale for selecting this content, Grade Management, is derived from research
conducted by the College of Educations Technology Committee. Grade management instruction
is included as part of the EDUC204 curriculum based on responses gathered from a
questionnaire of around 100 Horry and Georgetown County teachers and administrators. The
questionnaire prompted participants with lists of technological skills and software proficiencies.
Participants recorded both how often they performed the technological skill or used the listed
software, as well as how important they felt it was that these skills be taught to pre-service
teachers at Coastal Carolina University. Grade Management is a term prescribed to using
spreadsheet technology for grade calculating and recording in an educational context.
Understanding basic spreadsheet functions gives teachers the capability to automate much of the
calculation process by applying mathematical formulas to cell data.

Performance Context of Learners and Implications for Instruction

The twenty-two learners who will be receiving the instruction are all Coastal Carolina
undergraduate students. Three learners are early childhood majors, six are elementary majors,
four are middle level majors, five are special education majors, three are physical education
majors, and one is undecided and undeclared on a major. Many of these students do not have
prior knowledge of grade management functions.
In order to prepare the twenty-one education majors and one undeclared major for their possible
future profession as an educator, we will be conducting a class on spreadsheet terminology and
functionality, as well as grade management functions and calculations. As a result of this
workshop, students will be able to calculate unweighted averages, calculate weighted averages,
write formulas for weighted averages with up to three weights, and sort cells by high/low scores,
Students will demonstrate their understanding by executing these skills with at least 85%
accuracy on their homework assignment.

PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENTS
Instructional Goal Statement
The undergraduate education students at Coastal Carolina University will be able to utilize
Microsoft Excel to organize, format, and calculate students grade data to accurately maintain
student records. Students will be able to 1) input grade data, 2) demonstrate the ability to write
formulas for and calculate unweighted averages, 3) demonstrate the ability to write formulas for
and calculate weighted averages. Students will be able to demonstrate instructional goals 1, 2,
and 3 with 85% accuracy on the homework assignment.
Goal Analysis
Based on the instructional goal, learners will be able to do the following:
1. Create a chart of students grades
2. Calculate students final grades
3. Generate graphs using student data
