SCHOOL of ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE

A REPORT ON THE SEMINAR ATTENDED ON

FLUID MECHANICS/HYDRAULICS LABORATORY WORKSHOP held at the

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, JOSE MARIA COLLEGE, DAVAO CITY on
OCTOBER 21-23, 2010

PROCEEDINGS:

Day 1. October 21, 2010 (Thursday)

The seminar proper started at 7:30 am for the Registration of participants. I was still at Manila
since my scheduled flight was at 7:55 am. And, unfortunately, the flight was delayed for 30
minutes because of air traffic congestion.
My plane landed safely at Davao City International Airport at exactly 10:44 am. Since the venue
(Jose Maria College) is just a stones throw away from the airport, so I arrived there at around 11
a.m. The participants are already performing the second experiment (14 experiments all in all).
Engr. Walden Rio advised me to perform the first laboratory experiment on the last day after the
seminar.
Before the experiments, the participants were oriented by introducing the various laboratory
equipment of the school (JMC). I was able to get a photocopy of the List of Laboratory Equipment
(minimum requirements as per CHED) for BSCE program fir the subject Fluid
Mechanics/Hydraulics. (see attached list page 3-4).
The laboratory experiments were conducted and facilitated by Engr. Rodolfo V. Ocate, who also
distributed to the participants a Laboratory Manual in Fluid Mechanics/Hydraulics.
A total of five laboratory experiments were performed on Day 1, namely:
Experiment No. 1: Density Determination by Volumetric Method
Experiment No.2:

Determination of Volume by Weighing

Experiment No. 3: Viscosity of Liquid by Method of Falling Sphere

Experiment No. 4: Specific Gravity by U-Tube Manometer
Experiment No. 5: Hydrostatic Center of Pressure in a Submerged Gate

Day 2. October 22, 2010 (Friday)

The second day was all laboratory experiments. A total of 5 experiments were performed,
namely:
Experiment No. 6: Coefficient of Discharge of Orifice under Falling Head
Experiment No.7:

Metacentric Height of a Floating Body

Experiment No. 8: Coefficient of Discharge of Orifice by Projectile

Experiment No. 9: Determination of Density of Solid by Buoyancy

Experiment No. 10: Laminar and Turbulent Flow in a Pipe

Day 3. October 23, 2010 (Saturday)

Only Four experiments were performed during this day, namely:
Experiment No. 11: Determination of Coefficients of Venturimeter
Experiment No. 12: Coefficient of Discharge in a Weir
Experiment No. 13: Friction Losses in a Series of Pipes
Experiment No. 14: Pipe Network Analysis using Computer Software

Problems Encountered
There were problems encountered in some of the experiments.
For Experiment No. 11, the result of the experiment was way beyond the expected values. Engr.
Ocate surmised that the reason is due to the incorrect fabrication and installation of the
venturimeter.
For Experiment No. 14, which is purely on the use of the computer program which Engr. Ocate
has developed, the results using the computer did not tally with the manual solution. Thus, he
did not distribute anymore the software. Engr. Ocate told the participants that he will just send us
the program through our e-mails.
Browsing over the Laboratory Manual that Engr. Ocate gave us, this participant found out that
there were so many typographical errors like in most formulas and figures.

Insights Gained during the Seminar

This participant has gained a lot in this seminar. For one, since I began teaching in this
University, I never had the chance to handle this subject. So, I had recalled so many things
(formulas, theoretical concepts in Hydraulics) which I can use in teaching this subject in the
future.
I have gained knowledge in the use of these laboratory equipment so I can demonstrate and
teach it to the Civil Engineering students who will be taking up this subject.
