About Heavy Engineering Industry

Heavy industry is industry that involves one or more characteristics such as large
and heavy products; large and heavy equipment and facilities (such as heavy equipment,
large machine tools, and huge buildings); or complex or numerousprocesses. Of those factors,
heavy industry often involves higher capital intensity than light industry does, and it is also
often more heavily cyclical in investment and employment.
Traditional

examples

from

the

mid-19th

century

through

the

early

20th

included steelmaking, artillery production, locomotiveerection, machine tool building, and

the heavier types of mining. From the late 19th century through the mid-20th, as thechemical
industry and electrical industry developed, they involved components of both heavy industry
and light industry, which was soon also true for the automotive industry and the aircraft
industry. Modern shipbuilding (since steel replaced wood) is considered heavy industry. In
the postWorld War II era, construction of large systems, such as skyscrapers, large dams,
andlarge rockets, is also often classed as heavy industry.
Many East Asian countries rely on heavy industry as part of their overall economies. Among
Japanese and Korean firms with "heavy industry" in their names, many are
also manufacturers of aerospace products and defense contractors to their respective
countries' governments such as Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries and Korea's Hyundai Rotem, a
joint project ofHyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Heavy Industries.
Heavy industry is also sometimes a special designation in local zoning laws.

most successful biofuels Company, taking biobased technologies from India to the World.
Today, Praj offers innovative solutions for beverage alcohol and bioethanol plant, brewery,
water & wastewater treatment plant, critical process equipment and systems and bioproducts.
A globally leading Company with over 600 references in more than 60 countries across 5
continents, Praj has acquired an international repute for responsible and reliable solutions.
The business verticals of Praj are defined along 5 blocks :
a) Ethanol & Brewery Plants :
Praj enjoys an unique position in the world of ethanol technology by virtue of its expertise
which cuts across a variety of sugar to starch based feedstocks. Praj provides holistic
solutions for various grades of ethanol (beverage, fuel, industrial, pharma and perfumery) and
brewery plants encompassing range of technologies and systems for water & wastewater
management.

b) Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants :

Praj offers integrated water & wastewater treatment systems and has already made a
beginning in the industrial sector with a wide range of solutions. This vertical addresses
industrial applications for high quality water, complex effluent treatment including recycle,
reuse and zero liquid discharge plants.

c)

Critical Process Equipment System :

This vertical serves a wider sectoral requirement for high end equipment & systems finding
application in the oil & gas, petrochemical, fertilizer, chemicals industry. India is emerging as
a sourcing hub for engineered products, especially those which have a level of criticality in
terms of material of construction, complexity of fabrication and standards & codes to be
followed. Praj has demonstrated capabilities wherein it supplies critical process equipment &
systems to a number of domestic and global players.

d) High Purity Systems :

Addressing the pharmaceutical, biotech and F & B sector, Praj acquired Neela Systems (now
Praj Hipurity Systems), a Company engaged in providing hi purity water and hygienic
systems to the pharma industry. Praj plans to extend its footprints in the hygienic engineering
and systems business. It has the capability of providing end-to-end solutions for the pharma,
biotech, food & beverage sector. This will be an area of special focus where Praj will deploy
combined experience of Neela and Praj .
e) BioProducts :
Praj recently announced its entry into the biotech products business with launch of its
livestock feed health & nutrition business. Other than this, Praj is also working with
biochemicals and human health & nutrition products which are presently in different stages
of development.
The backbone of Prajs technology development is Praj Matrix, the Innovation Center. Praj
Matrix is working on bioethanol and biochemicals processes.

Having established a global leadership in 1st Generation Ethanol technology, Praj has
initiated a project in expanding its 2nd Generation Cellulosic Ethanol Program to Demo

scale. The plant will utilize agri-residues like cane trash, corn cobs, corn stover and bagasse
to produce ethanol to be blended with petrol. Praj has successfully evaluated this technology
at pilot scale.
Praj has well equipped manufacturing facilities - one in Pune and two at Kandla (Gujarat),
port of India and another at Wada near Mumbai. The units are accredited with ASME U and
H stamps and ISO 9001-2008. Equipment engineering and fabrication is in accordance with
international standards and codes. Praj has recently come up with a world class
manufacturing facility for its Industrial Biotech products and Processes (IBPP). Praj employs
more than 1000 professionals in India and overseas from various engineering and other
disciplines.
With a slew of new initiatives, Praj aspires to be a major player in the environment, energy
and agri process led applications providing innovative, integrated solutions including plant,
equipment and products that will enhance the quality of life.
d) DISA Shaping Industries:
DISA develops and manufactures a complete range of metal casting production solutions for
the ferrous and non-ferrous foundry industries. A long-standing tradition of innovation,
reliability and commitment to providing its customers with competitive business value results
in DISA today enjoying the trust and loyalty of leading foundries all over the world.
Broadest Industry Offer
DISAs moulding product portfolio comprises vertical (DISAMATIC), match plate (DISA
MATCH) and horizontal (DISA FLEX) green sand moulding systems. For many customers
the company provides complete integrated foundry lines which, in addition to the moulding
technology platforms, include complete sand plants, conveyor systems, cooling drums,
cleaning solutions, CIM modules and core machine plants.
Following the merger with Wheelabrator in 2009, the DISA shot blast offer was rebranded
"Wheelabrator", you will find all information relating to surface preparation/shotblast
technology in the Wheelabrator section of the site.
Which type of moulding technology is best for you?

The choice of moulding technology generally comes down to size and geometrical
complexity of the part being created versus the desired production volume.
Vertical moulding technology is predominately suited for high volume, high precision
castings. DISAs vertical moulding offer is the best in the industry. With 1,450 vertical
moulding machines installed in the market since the introduction of the DISAMATIC in
1964, DISA remains the partner of choice for customers throughout the world. This installed
base is second to none.
Match plate moulding machines are typically the preferred option for foundries desiring more
flexibility in their offer. Foundries using match plate technology place an emphasis on quick
changeover cycles to serve a very broad customer base on a maketoorder basis. They
compete on speed to market and the ability to produce a wide range of products on their
moulding platform. To address this increasing need in the market, DISA developed the
flaskless DISA MATCH technology in 2000.
Horizontal moulding machines tend to be the technology of choice for lower volume, larger
castings. Foundries using horizontal technology often produce large, heavy and geometrically
complex parts (boiler elements, engine blocks, gear boxes, etc.) on relatively low volume
requirements. In 2004 DISA introduced the FLEX flask line to meet the needs of this critical
market segment.
Complete Moulding Line Expertise
A Tradition of Innovation
Throughout its long history in moulding technology, DISA has continuously developed and
brought to market highquality innovative solutions to the foundry industry. DISAs machines
have more uptime, lower maintenance costs and a higher degree of automation when
compared to alternative offers.
A history of innovation confirms this trend:
1900 Formation of the company
1961 Purchase of patent for vertical moulding machine
1964 First DISAMATIC 2011 sold

1974 Introduction of PLC control systems to replace mechanical controls

1977 Introduction of double sided mould squeeze

reinforce its technical pre-eminence as the global leader in moulding machines:

- 1900 year of establishment

- 97 current and active patent filings

- 2,200 installed moulding machines
