    BobDylandoesnotdeservetheNobelPrizeinLiterature.
    HedoesdeservethemanyGrammyshehasreceived,includingalifetime
    achievementaward,whichhewonin1991.HeunquestionablybelongsintheRock&
    RollHallofFame,intowhichhewasinductedin1988alongwiththeSupremes,the
    BeatlesandtheBeachBoys.Heisawonderfulmusician,aworldclasssongwriter
    andanenormouslyinfluentialfigureinAmericanculture.
    Butbyawardingtheprizetohim,theNobelcommitteeischoosingnottoaward
    ittoawriter,andthatisadisappointingchoice.
    Yes,Mr.Dylanisabrilliantlyricist.Yes,hehaswrittenabookofprosepoetry
    andanautobiography.Yes,itispossibletoanalyzehislyricsaspoetry.ButMr.
    Dylanswritingisinseparablefromhismusic.Heisgreatbecauseheisagreat
    musician,andwhentheNobelcommitteegivestheliteratureprizetoamusician,it
    missestheopportunitytohonorawriter.
    Asreadingdeclinesaroundtheworld,literaryprizesaremoreimportantthan
    ever.Abigprizemeansajumpinsalesandreadershipevenforawellknownwriter.
    Butmorethanthat,awardingtheNobeltoanovelistorapoetisawayofaffirming
    thatfictionandpoetrystillmatter,thattheyarecrucialhumanendeavorsworthyof
    internationalrecognition.

    Popularmusicissuchanendeavortoo,but,forthemostpart,italreadyreceives
    therecognitionitdeserves.Andapartfromafewspokenwordawards,noonewould
    expectthehighesthonorsinmusictogotoawriterwewontbeseeingZadie
    SmithorMaryGaitskillintheRock&RollHallofFame.
    Thecommitteeprobablydidnotmeantoslightfictionorpoetrywithitschoice.
    Byhonoringamusicalicon,thecommitteemembersmayhavewantedtobringnew
    culturalcurrencytotheprizeandmakeitfeelrelevanttoayoungergeneration.
    Buttherearemanywaystheycouldhaveaccomplishedthiswhilestillhonoring
    awriter.Theycouldhavechosenawriterwhohasmadesignificantinnovationsin
    theform,likeJenniferEgan,TejuColeorAnneCarson.Theycouldhaveselecteda
    writerfromthedevelopingworld,whichremainswoefullyunderrepresentedamong
    Nobellaureates.Theycouldhavepickedawriterwhohasbuiltanaudience
    primarilyonline,likeWarsanShire,whobecamethefirstYoungPoetLaureateof
    Londonin2014.
    Instead,thecommitteegavetheprizetoamanwhoisinternationallyfamousin
    anotherfield,onewithplentyofhonorsofitsown.BobDylandoesnotneedaNobel
    PrizeinLiterature,butliteratureneedsaNobelPrize.Thisyear,itwontgetone.
