Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will be able to read and pick up context clues to predict what happens further in the story.

Students will use textual evidence to flesh out a character and their motives.

Students will analyze the differences in how the main character is portrayed through the book and film.
Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will be developing a deeper understanding about the characters and themes of Anna Karenina. Students will
also be analyzing character development and examine the motives and characteristics of main characters. They will be looking at
how the characters interact with society and they ways society impacts each character. Students will also be comparing and
contrasting how the same character is portrayed in both film and the book. Students will be analyzing the ways movies and books
can convey the same information, and the pros and cons of each format. Students will be practicing using text evidence to draw
inferences and support their analysis.
Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level:
-A class poll asking the students the
number of people in their relationship
-A brainstorm of pros and cons of movies
vs books
-A quick write on what foreshadowing is.

Lesson 1

Formative:
-Graphic organizer of a character map.
The map details the main characters of
the story along with guided questions
about the characters
-Venn diagram of movie vs. books
-Graphic organizer foreshadowing

Summative:

-A compare and contrast essay that


examines how society, religion, and law
treat Anna's adultery much differently
from her brother's, Stiva.

Lesson Activities:
The lesson will start out with a brainstorm of the pros and cons of movies vs. books. The
students will then fill out a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting how Anna is portrayed in
the movie vs. the book. The lesson will then end with a presentation in groups of 4, where each
group will present one aspect of Anna and how it was portrayed in the movie vs. the book.

foreshadowing?
A prediction chart that

from the text, and the

Lesson Activities:
The lesson will start out with a question: What is foreshadowing? Students will be called on to
share their answers and the discussion will be guided by the teacher. After the question, the
students will be given a What Happens Next? Graphic organizer worksheet that they will fill out
with their own predictions based on the clues given in the text. To close the lesson, students will
then be assigned a small project where they choose a passage from the book and analyze it for
context clues.

The lesson will start off with a poll, asking the students how many people are in their
relationship circles, including family, friends, and love ones. This will warm them up to the
intricate and complex relationship circles in the book. After poll, there will be a teacher
lecture aided by a graphic organizer of a character map. The map details the main
characters of the story along with guided questions about the characters. The students will
fill out a guided notes worksheet comparing and contrasting the two main characters of
the book. The students will them be assignment a compare and contrast essay comparing
Anna and Stivas adultery.
