Math
Unit: Place Value
Topic: Greater Than, Less Than and Equal to
2nd
Students have been working on a Place value unit for two and half weeks so far. This is
the third and last week of the unit. This week we have introduced greater than, less than
and equal to as well as how to create the biggest and smallest number with a set of
digits.

EEI (ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF INSTRUCTION) - LESSON PLAN

ELEMENTS
REQUIRED:
I can answer math questions and discuss my math strategies with a partner.
I can explain greater than, less than or equal to.
Objective

Anticipatory Set

Teach Lesson /
Model

What strategy can I use to solve this problem?

What is greater than, less than or equal to?
Ask them to close their eyes and think of a time that they had less of something and how
they wanted more of that thing. (Helps them get in the mindset that the alligator <,>
wants to always eat the bigger number because it always wants more)
1. TW- Review what Greater than, less than and equal too are. Put the charts on the
board as we review.
2. SW- talk with their seat partner on what greater than, less than and equal to are
3. TW- will go over two problems with the class on the whiteboard about greater
than, less than and equal to.
4. TW- Use the Hovercam to show the students the Gator Game they will be playing
and I will model how it is played. Then I will pass out worksheets and pieces of the
game to every student
5. SW- work with their seat partner to play the Gator Game. During the game they
will be practicing greater than, less than and equal to problems. The student who
roles the bigger number gets to advance forward one space. The first player to
the cake in the center wins.
6. TW- walk around and monitor students and check for understanding. After the
time is up I will collect the game pieces and pass out an exit ticket to assess their
understanding
7. SW- complete an exit ticket before moving on to their next subject

Guided Practice

Displaying the worksheet/game on the Hover Cam and going through the worksheet as a
class while modeling how the worksheet works and how they play the game.

Independent
Practice

Having students think to themselves what they think greater than, less than and equal to
mean. Have them play a gator game with their seat partner while completing greater
than, less than or equal to problems.

Closure

The students will complete an exit ticket on greater than, less than and equal to, this will
assess their understanding of the lesson.

Evaluation
*Assessment/Rubri
cs

Walking around and checking for students understanding while they are working. Asking
the students questions while they are working. Completing an exit ticket to asses their
understanding of the lesson
