Section 3: UNIT STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES

The Objectives and their aligned Standards for this unit were designed to address the Common
Core State Standards. They are meant to improve the literacy (speaking, writing, reading, and
listening) skills of students. Additionally, many of the objectives were created to increase
understanding of sequence, time, and numeracy in the classroom. Lastly, many objectives
revolve around technology via Google Classroom and the tools embedded into this site. This
helps students to grow in their technological proficiency.
The Objectives are aligned with the Standards below based on their correlated numbers. There
are varied Objectives to allow students to demonstrate their proficiency of content in multiple
ways. These Objectives were designed to push students to think critically about the text and the
world around them. Many of the Objectives from the unit I taught are listed below.
Objectives
1. Practice reading visual texts for comprehension and theme.
2. Identify characters and locations from The Odyssey and understand their connections.
3. Understand and apply structural features of a graphic novel.
4. To practice reading strategies and to aid comprehension (prediction, connection, sequencing,
analysis).
5. Express my thoughts verbally.
6. Understand and use an electronic note-taking system for characters and places in The Odyssey.
7. Demonstrate my reading comprehension.
8. Demonstrate my understanding of parts of speech: prep. and conj.
9. Summarize and respond (with opinion/reaction) to what I read.
10. Reflect on my performance with the weeks Learning Target.
11. Express my thoughts in writing.
Standards
1. RL.9-10.9: Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific
work.
2. RL.9-10.3: Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop over the course of a
text.
3. RL.9-10.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development
over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific
details; provide an objective summary of the text.
4. RL.9-10.7: Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including
visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
5. SL.9-10.1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with
diverse partners on topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own
clearly and persuasively.
6. W.9-10.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or
shared writing products, taking advantage of technologys capacity to link to other information
and to display information flexibly and dynamically
