NUS POSTGRADUATE DEVELOPMENT STUDIES PROGRAMME

As a developing country, Samoa faces many challenges in common with other Pacific Island countries and Small Island states. Development
Studies devotes attention to development issues ranging from sustainability to poverty reduction to gender equality to democracy and good

2017-2018 Chevening Scholarships


Applications are now open for the United Kingdoms 2017/2018 Chevening Scholarships for a one-year Masters degree at any university in the
United Kingdom. The Chevening Scholarship is the UK governments global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office and partner organizations. Applicants from Samoa can choose any course of study at any UK higher education institution.
A Chevening award in Samoa includes:
University tuition fees (Chevening applies a tuition fee cap of 18,000 to MBA programmes. (Applicants will be expected to cover the remaining
costs above the 18,000 cap)
A monthly stipend
Travel costs to and from the UK
An arrival allowance
Homeward departure allowance
The cost of one visa application
A travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK
Applications must be submitted online at http://www.chevening.org/samoa. Applicants should read the online guidance and demonstrate how
they meet the Chevening selection criteria before submitting an application. The key criteria for applicants are an undergraduate degree and two
years work experience.
The deadline for the submission of applications online is 12pm on 8 November 2016. A hard copy of the application must be submitted to the
Scholarships Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Level 3, Government Building, Eleele Fou, on the same date. Please note that
the successful candidate(s) will be required to sign a scholarship bond with the Government of Samoa prior to their departure.

OPUS Samoan Partnership Awards


Applications are now open for the 2017 OPUS Samoan Partnership Award for partial sponsorship at either Auckland University or the University
of Canterbury towards a degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering. The award is for long term study and is limited to partial
tuition assistance of NZD$6,000 per annum, and a supplementary allowance of NZD$1,000 to cover books and stationary. Interested candidates
may download or uplift application forms and eligibility criteria from the Scholarships Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Level 3,
Government Building, Eleele Fou or at www.mfat.gov.ws Please note that the successful candidate(s) will be required to sign a scholarship bond
with the Government of Samoa. The due date for submission of applications is the 30th November 2016.

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for 2017/2018


Applications are open for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for the academic year 2017/2018, to commence studies on 1 September
2017 at Swiss universities and institutes offered under this scheme. The types of scholarships offered are:
PhD Scholarships*
Duration of study is 3 years maximum
Must hold a Masters degree or equivalent university degree recognised by the Swiss University
Must not be over 35 years old at the time of the application
Research Scholarships*
Duration of study is 12 months maximum
Must hold a Masters degree equivalent university degree recognised by the Swiss University
Must not be over 35 years old at the time of the application
Postdoctoral Scholarships*
Duration of study for 12 months maximum
Must hold a PhD degree
No more than five years may have passed between the award of the PhD and the application deadline

2016 Instructions for the United States-South Pacific (USSP)


Scholarship Competition
U.S. Embassy Apia is pleased to inform you of the 2016 Competition Instructions for the United States-South Pacific Scholarship Program.
The United StatesSouth Pacific Scholarship Program, authorized by the U.S. Congress and funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural
Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is a competitive, merit-based scholarship program that provides opportunities for Masters and Bachelors
degree study at the University of Hawaii in fields that are directly relevant to the development needs of Pacific island countries. It will also enable
the recipients to obtain a broader understanding of the United States. The scholarship program will include a mentoring component with a
possible follow-on summer internship, and readily accessible opportunities for participation in host family and volunteer service programs.
Candidates from the following countries, who meet specific selection criteria, are eligible for the program: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue,
Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The U.S.South Pacific Scholarship Program is administered by the EastWest Center on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.
Eligible Fields of Study: Priority areas of study include agriculture, business, communication/journalism, education, environmental studies, gender
studies, NGO management, political science, public administration, public health, STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics),
and other related fields. If a desired field of study is not among the priorities, the applicant should give special attention to explaining how this
course of study would support the goals of the scholarship program. Support is not available for professional degrees such as architecture, law,
and medicine.

Applicants MUST BE CITIZENS of one of the sovereign Pacific Island countries listed above. Individuals who have dual citizenship, one of which is
from the United States, are NOT ELIGIBLE. U.S. non-citizen nationals and U.S. permanent residents are also NOT ELIGIBLE for USSP.

2017 Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom


Applications are now open for Samoan citizens for the 2016 Commonwealth Scholarships tenable in the United Kingdom.
The Scholarships on offer are for Masters (1 Year) and PhD (3 Years) level study commencing in September/October 2017. Applicants must hold a
first degree of at least upper class second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually
a Masters degree).
Applicants must apply to study at Masters/PhD level at a UK University with which the CSC has a part funding agreement. A list of these
universities can be found at http://bit.ly/cscuk-uk-universities.
All interested Candidates must apply using the Electronic Application System (EAS) which is available on the Commonwealth Scholarships Website
http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/eas/applicants/scholarships/ by 15 November 2016. Once the EAS process has been completed, applicants are
required to submit the PDF hard-copy of the EAS application form to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Samoa also by 15 November
2016.
