1. Examples of GIS applications in the study of biodiversity of the landscape for
farming activity continues

GIS is an information system that is based on computer work to enter,

manage, manipulate and analyze data and provide a description. (Aronoff, 1989)
Geographic Information System (GIS) which is a system of disclosure of
information location or point on the map of the earth which is done by hardware
devices and software based computers. The process of Geographic Information
System is usually also named as mapping. In Geographic Information Systems data
is stored in a table (tabular data) and spatial (data that has the characteristics of the
location and represents a place or location). GIS in use associated with multiple sets
of data (database) in order to provide rapid information somewhere. Geographic
Information Systems can be applied in various fields such as education, industry,
tourism, trade, transportation, traffic, agriculture, land use planning and
infrastructure. GIS can help mapping, data processing, storage and recall of spatial
data that maintain georeferences and its attributes are associated in the form of nonspatial data. GIS applications is very helpful in the areas of agriculture, including:
a. Monitoring production in agriculture
b. The risk assessment of farming
c. Pest and disease control
d. Monitoring of agricultural cultivation
e. Precision agriculture,
f. Management water resources
g. Study of biodiversity of the landscape for sustainable agriculture activity
In this paper, the application will be more focused in the study of
biodiversity in a landscape. GIS applications in the study of the biodiversity of the
landscape means GIS is used to determine the diversity within a landscape, and then
from the data that have been obtained will be analyzed further to determine whether
biodiversity of the landscape can support sustainable agricultural activities or not. A
sample taken in the application of GIS is a journal entitled "Study of Value and
Distribution of Biodiversity in the Watershed (DAS) Ciliwung upstream" by Sri
Wahyu and Syartinilia.
2. Explanation of the application related to where they are carried, on agricultural
systems how to apply GIS is done, any kind of spatial data is needed to make
the example, how the benefits of the application of GIS in running the farm
system
GIS applications is done on a watershed Ciliwung, exactly in the three
districts that are in Ciliwung upstream, Bogor. All three districts are District of
Ciawi, Megamendung, and Cisarua. Ciliwung watershed upstream of an ecosystem
that provides services landscape of the surrounding area, namely in the form of
services of water regulation, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and the beauty of the
landscape. The increased conversion of open land into smaller plots for various
needs such as housing, industry, tourism and other infrastructure by not based on
knowledge of the environment resulted in a very drastic change in Ciliwung
watershed ecosystem. Application of GIS is done to biodiversity in the watershed
experienced sustainability and continuity is maintained.
Spatial data is graphics data that identifies geographic landscape locations be
the point lines, and polygons. Spatial data obtained from the map stored in digital
form (numeric). Spatial data is needed here is a map of Bogor Regency in which
there are three districts that have been disclosed previously.

Picture 1. Map of Research Area (District Ciawi, Megamendung, and Cisarua)

There is also software GIS, and hardware used during the study. Application of GIS
benefits of this is that biodiversity in the region upstream Ciliwung can be mapped
so that it can be done better management in order to experience sustainability and
biodiversity preserved.
3. Description of how the opportunities each of these examples is applied in one of
the farming systems in Indonesia towards the implementation of agriculture
continues,
GIS application opportunities is applied quite large, especially if the
government and the public is cooperate. This biodiversity is closely related to
sustainable agriculture, besides the high biodiversity of high heterogeneity of course,
means a landscape will be more stable because of the disruption will be smaller,
resulting in the carrying capacity of the landscape to sustain the population and
activity in it. Therefore considering the importance of this biodiversity in sustainable
agriculture opportunities of applying GIS of course will also high.,
4. General Discussion and Conclusion.
The research was at Ciliwung watershed, exactly in three districts that are in
Ciliwung upstream, Bogor (Ciawi District, Megamendung, and Cisarua). There are
25 village in the area. The large of the area is 14.324 hectare. Obserfate determine
land cover in this area/ region is divided into seven classes: forest, plantation, shrubs,
paddy fields, fields, settlements and water bodies. The economic activities in this
area continues to shift from agriculture to non-agriculture. The biodiversity in the
area can be see by some indicator, there are existence of threatened species, changes
land cover and land use, intensity of land use organic farming, total population,
resident jobs and infrastructure. The application GIS in those indicators was
explained in the pictures below

Picture 2. Map of Indicator Biodiversity Value (a) Existence of Threatened Species, (b)
Changes Land Cover and Land Use, (c) Intensity of Land Use Organic Farming, (d) Total
population, (e) Resident Jobs, and (f) Infrastructure

The picture mean that there many existence of threatened species in the area
below in the green color. The change land cover and land use is small. The intensity
of land use organic farming is good. The population of human was centralized. The
resident job that maintain agricultural is small. The infrastructure is good in the right
area but no good in left area. By piling up those map we can know the map of
biodiversity value and distribution.

Picture 3. Biodiversity Value and Distribution Map

Based on the GIS map and analysis biodiversity in Ciliwung watershed, we

can know the value and the distribution biodiversity in the area. So, there are the
distribution: 6.121 Ha area have a high biodiversity value, 5.204 Ha area have
average biodiversity value, and 2.635 Ha area is categorized with low biodiversity
value. From the results of the identification of the distribution of biodiversity in the
research site, it is known that the Ciliwung upstream toward the bottom there is a

downward trend in the value of biodiversity, from District Cisarua, Megamendung,

and Ciawi. This is influenced by the limited availability of open land, the high level
of cover change and land use, the rapid development of infrastructure, and socioeconomic factors such as the increase in population and economic structure seen
from the main type of work people.
We know how important biodiversity is, so to make the biodiversity in the
area kept sustainable there must make some management. In this case the
recommendations of biodiversity management is:
a. Aligning basin and regional administration,
b. Protect the value of biodiversity of area through legal approach,
c. The rehabilitation of land in the area where the value of biodiversity is
fragmented,
d. Maintain the region tea plantations which serves as a buffer zone for the region
and regional TNGGP Telaga Warna
e. Introduced a system of incentives and disincentives for parties involved, and
f. Socializing periodically related to biodiversity and landscape services.
