Subject: Library Media Program Self-Evaluation

I recently conducted a self-evaluation on the media center, along with several

different aspects of our programming, at Arbor Station Elementary School. I used
the 2015 Judy Serritella Exemplary Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric to
guide the evaluation. This rubric covered six different target indicators and
categories including student achievement and instruction, technology, staffing,
facilities, access, and resources, administrative support, and staff development.
Each category was assessed and given one of three levels of proficiency: basic,
proficient, or exemplary. Among the 21 different categories, Arbor Station received a
rating of basic in three categories, proficient in eight categories, and exemplary in
ten categories.
As stated in the rubric, All exemplary programs will have achieved the
requirements set out in state education laws, state board policies, state guidelines,
and selected National Standards. The goal for the Arbor Station Media Center is to
work toward Exemplary in all target indicators and categories. I have developed an
action plan to move our basic ratings toward proficient, and our proficient ratings to
exemplary. Please review and let me know of any questions or concerns you may
have.

Action Plan
Our goal is to move our program into
Exemplary in all areas. In order to do
this, we must address the levels in
which we are only Proficient.
Although we are using the CCGPS in
planning lessons during collaboration,
we need to take it to the next level
and incorporate AASL standards on a
more consistent basis. In order to do
this, we will follow the following
steps.
1. The Media Specialist will

in active teaching roles.
4. Media center
resources encourage and
support reading, viewing,
and listening.
5. Services are provided
to students who have
diverse learning abilities,
styles, and needs.

6. Student achievement
is routinely assessed.

collaborate with at least one

teacher per grade level each
month (changing the teacher
each month).
2. During each collaboration, the
Media Specialist will integrate,
at minimum, one AASL standard
into planning.
3. The integrated AASL standard
will be assessed at completion
of lesson.

Media Specialist will collaborate with

the Special Education Team on a more
frequent basis. More time will be
spent teaching those with diverse
learning abilities outside of their
regular education classrooms.
In order to move from Basic to
Proficient, we must decide, with the
library advisory, how we can
implement assessment into the
already flexible scheduling that is
occurring on a daily basis. We will
take the following steps to start
progressing towards a proficient
rating in this area.
1. Choosing one grade level per
month, we will create a rubric to
assess material being covered
during Media Lesson times.
2. Students taking part in the BNN
news network team will be
assessed on their project based
activities and these grades will
be shared with the teachers.
3. Teacher and Media Specialist
will collaborate to create

student assessments to coincide

with lessons on which they have
taught together. Media
Specialists will assist teachers
with the administration of said
assessment.

Although students and teachers are

given the monthly password for
Galileo, use of the resource is not
taking place in our building. As the
Media Specialist, I need to offer
professional development, as well as
student training on the use of this
resource.
1. Media Specialist will walk
through Galileo and guide
teachers to experiment with
the many things that it can

bring to the elementary

classroom. This will be done
on a professional development
work day or during a faculty
meeting.

Galileo as the sole resource of
information gathering while
teaching a research lesson with
3rd-5th grade students.

Our county does not have a

designated system media contact
person (SMCP). The closest thing
that we have to this is our sole
Instructional Technologist in the
county. He attends all of our district
media specialists meetings, and
instructs us to redeliver new
technologies and software to our
buildings. The media specialists do
decide on who will represent them (in
terms of scheduling meetings,
obtaining speakers, deciding on
content to be discussed and
delivered). This happens each time
the serving representative decides to
step down. Appointing a SMCP is a
decision that is out of my hands,
however, it is something that could
be addressed at our district wide
meetings because I do believe that it
is an important position because we
need a representative within the
county office.
