Application for New Club

All clubs must begin going through a 1-year trial

period. Clubs that meet the following criteria will be
promoted to chartered status:

Adopt club goals that impact the community in a significant*

way
Document evidence and action plans illustrating stated goals
have been met
Completion of a mid-year audit as well as end of year audit

*Significant impact on the community is assessed by the

Executive Council. The council will use the following criteria to
assess the significance of your impact:
What sets your club apart from existing clubs?
Does your club have an action plan to achieve goals?
Does your club impact the Community (SAS, Shanghai, or
Global) in a way that Adds Value to those impacted?
Does your club have evidence of impact? i.e. purchase sports
equipment for migrant schools.
The point of this application is to focus your club work so that it is
meaningful while simultaneously holding the club members
accountable. If you fail to achieve the above after 1 year of trial
existence, you will not fold, however your club will continue as
unchartered.
Information on TYPE of Clubs:
Service: Service clubs provide a service for individuals or a group
of people. These services usually do not necessitate an economic
contribution. Examples include: Tutoring, reading to the elderly,
attending local orphanage to play with children, teaching
elementary students rugby, computer training, etc. If money is
needed to pay for certain things (school supplies for migrant
children for example), service clubs may apply to the executive
council for funds to cover such costs of operation.
Charitable: Charitable clubs provide financial support for
individuals or groups of people. They are can be associated with
broader international organizations and non-profits. Clubs that are
charitable clubs have bank accounts at SAS and can fund raise
freely. Examples are: Eggschange, Wokai, and Animals Asia.
Interest: Interest clubs are clubs that are formed around
individuals common interests. Chess club, computer programming
club and fitness club are examples of interest clubs.

Application for New Clubs Form A

Clubs Mission Statement:
To act as an educational platform to provide a chance for
impoverished chinese students in the local community to live up to
their potentials through the use of technology.
Please provide a rationalization for why this club fills a niche
at SAS that is not already being filled by an existing club:
The club gives our students an opportunity to engage in the
diversity that exists within different learning styles in different
cultures. By connecting impoverished students with highly educated
personnel and providing english lessons to increase a students
abilities in communication and learning, this club aims to give a
chance for students without the economic standing to achieve highquality education by themselves to mimic higher-education settings.
The biggest difference between this club and other service or
charitable clubs is that we aim to apply technology these students
already have (such as smartphones with Wechat, which a large
majority of Chinese users have) to bring them convenient education

at all times. In addition, through writing our own webinar teaching

outline and developing education resources through a combination
of computer science (coding) aspects and English knowledge, we
will bring a more westernized approach to teaching.

Our Clubs Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and

Time Based (SMART) goals for the following year are (if
more than one, please number):
1. To create a wechat webinar platform by the end of the 20162017 school year, which allows for free to low cost (a few kuai)
education in a large/small group settings (10-50 people) with
one teacher speaking and prompting discussion
2. To code and design a website with information regarding our
programs which will be accessible without VPN
3. Contact prestigious universities and affiliations in Shanghai
(such as Jiaotong University, NYU Shanghai) to develop a more
international approach to teaching English
4. Write a comprehensive curriculum (including workbooks,
guides) on a Western approach to learning English and how it
may be more beneficial than the general memorize and test
method Chinese schools use
These goals will be successful, if and only if, we achieve the
following (you will be required to file a detailed GOAL
FORM to execs if your club is approved):
1. Work together as a group and cooperate with higher-education
standing teachers and students
2. Contacting elementary school teachers at SAS on their
approaches to teaching when consulting the program
3. Reaching out to local schools to inform them of our program
These goals Add Value to the community in the following
way(s):
1. Students will be able to positively benefit the community in a
way they know how- through teaching a language most of us
regard as our first, we are more comfortable communicating
to students
2. Students can learn how to apply technology positively to
education rather than negatively
3. Students can learn new knowledge such as website coding
(will be dedicated portions of the club for website
management, teaching, etc)
4. Teachers will be able to communicate with students on
teaching processes
5. Giving a chance for students to become teachers and take
responbility

How does your clubs MISSION STATEMENT align with SAS
Mission Statement and/or Core Values:
Part of SASs mission statement is to have the courage to live your
dreams. Usually, as teenagers, we are not encouraged to pursue big
ideas because adults think we cant handle them. However, we
believe that although some people may believe there are teachers
more qualified to work on a curriculum that incorporates Western
and Chinese ideals, our living conditions in an international
community has enabled us to bring new perspective and insight to
this topic of choice. We believe that were doing something to
positively benefit the society, and we all have the technology
available to us to do so. By using technology in learning, which is
already implemented in our school, in a Chinese setting, we are
expanding our own ideals to a more international community with
efficiency and having the courage to live our dreams by pursuing
something usually unexpected of us.
