CHRISTIAN ETHICS
A/P

Assignment in Theology 3
1. The end (or intention) modifies the morality of an act:
a. A good end can make better an act good in its object: Jimin
wants to have a healthy body, so he works out or jogs whenever he
has free time.
b. A good end can make good an act indifferent in its object:
Chesca plays calming music whenever shes studying to elevate her
thoughts; little did she know that the music makes her dorm-mates
sleepy whenever theyre studying.
c. A good end can make less evil an act evil in its object, however
it can never become good by reason of a good end: A common
vigilante goes against the governments rules and regulations, and
steals goods to give them to the needy.
d. A bad end can make worse an act evil in its object: Jade is a
common cheater, one time the professor caught her sneaking peeks on
a code (kodigo) and this act led to her expulsion.
e. A bad end can make evil an act indifferent in its object: Tashana
is a common fake, she shows everyone how nice, kind, prim and
perfect she is but deep inside while being nice she thinks of certain
f.

ways how she can eliminate those persons from her social status.
A bad end can make evil an act good in its object: Several jocks
decided to put up a bet on who gets to take Annas virginity. One guy
(Chase) gets to approval of Anna for a date, after several dates the two
got to know each other very well. And in the end Chase felt that his
love for Anna is unconditional. Chase decides to call off the bet on her,
and confesses his real intentions and true feeling for Anna.

2. What are the principles to remember regarding the principle of

double effect?
The Principle of Double Effect that originated from St. Thomas Aquinas
Summa Theologica for the treatment of homicidal self-defense. And the
following are the known criteria for the principle: (1) the nature of the act is
itself good, or at least morally neutral, (2) the agent intends the good effect
and not the bad either as a means to the good or as an end itself, and (3) the

good effect outweighs the bad effect in circumstances sufficiently grave to

justify causing the bad effect and the agent exercises due diligence to
minimize the harm.
