Background

Beforeindependence,officercadetsoftheRoyalIndian
NavyweretrainedintheUnitedKingdomwiththeRoyal
Navy.CadetsunderwentfouryearsoftraininginDartmouthandwerecommissionedasSubLieutenantsupon
theirreturn.In1949,theofficertrainingfortheNavybeganattheinterimJointServicesWing(JSW)ofthe
ArmedForcesAcademy.TheNationalDefenceAcademy(NDA)wasestablishedin1954astheJointServices
academyoftheIndianArmedForces.
By1968,theNavyrealisedthattheNDAcouldnotkeepupwithitsexpandingstaffingrequirements.Italso
neededadditionalspaceandfacilitiestoimpartadvancedmaritimeskillstoofficersandsailors.InMay1969,
theIndianNavalAcademywasestablishedinCochintoconsolidatefacilitiesfornavaltraining.

TheacademywasconsolidatedwiththeOfficerstrainingschool,atINS
MandoviinGoain1976.ButwiththegrowinguseofINSMandovias
anoperationalnavalbase,aswellastheexistingProvostandPhysical
Trainingschoolatthelocation,theNavalAcademyoperatedunder
considerablespaceconstraints.Inaddition,providingbasictrainingfor
CoastGuardofficersattheacademyfurtherstretchedthefacilities.
HencetheNavydevelopedplansforanewpermanentNavalAcademy
tocopewithincreasingtrainingload.
Theinitialrequirementforthesitefortheacademywasatleast100
acres(0.40km2),inthevicinityoftheseaoralargelakeforbasic
seamanship.Thesitehadtobeintheproximityofarailhead,yetat
somedistancefromtheneighbouringtowns.Anotherrequirementwas
relativeproximitytoanavalbase,aswellasabracingandmoderate
climate.Thespacerequirementwaslaterrevisedtoconsolidatetraining
effortsinasinglelocationforcosteffectiveoperation.

In1979,theGovernmentofIndiaapprovedthedevelopmentofanew
campusfortheIndianNavalAcademy.Thesitesconsideredforthenew
NavalAcademywereAruvankadunearthePykaraDamLakeinthe
NilgiriHillsinthevicinityofWellingtonCantonment,asitenearthe
Guardofhonourduringaparadeat
BhatgharDamsituatedoffthePuneKolhapurhighway,Hassergate
INA.
LakenearBangalore,PorbandarontheSaurashtracoast,Chengalpattu
ontheTamilNaducoastnearChennaianda,northofKannuronthe
Keralacoast.TheGovernmentofKeralawaskeentohosttheacademyinthestateandofferedtheNavy960
hectaresatEzhimala.ItalsoofferedessentialinfrastructurefacilitieslikEzhimalewaterandelectricitysupply,
approachroadsandbridges,capitaldredgingoftheKavvayibackwaters(forbasicrowingandsmallboat
training),constructionofaseawalltopreventerosion,aswellasexpansionofthenearestrailwaystationatno
costtotheNavy.In1982,theCentralGovernmentapprovedtheconstructionoftheacademyatEzhimalaand
grantedtheKeralaGovernmentasoft,mediumtermloanforacquiringthelandfromprivateownersandthe
resettlementoftheevacuees.[4]
ThefirstCommandantoftheINAwasViceAdmiralMPMuralidharanandthefirstDeputyCommandantwas
RearAdmiralKapilGupta.

Construction
Afterdelaysinlandacquisition,thefoundationstonefortheacademywaslaidbythenprimeministerRajiv
Gandhion17January1987.Soonafter,inthewakeofthe1991Indiaeconomiccrisis,thecentralgovernment
wasforcedtocutbackfundingfortheconstructionoftheacademy.Later,constructionwasstalleddueto
litigationresultingfromthelandacquisition.Constructionfinallyresumed199798.
On6April2005,thenavalbasedepotINSZamorinwascommissionedasapartofPhaseIoftheacademyby
thenChiefMinisterofKerala,OommenChandy.TheEzhimalasiteislocatedonapromontorythatwasthe
capitaloftheMooshikakingdom,whowererivalsandlateralliesoftheZamorinrulersofKozhikode.The
ZamorinshadastrongfleetofwarshipsunderthestewardshipoftheKunjaliMarakkarswhichdefeatedthe
Portugueseinnavalbattlesinthe16thcentury.
On8January2009theIndianNavalAcademy,wasinauguratedbythenprimeministerManmohanSingh.[3][5]
Originallyenvisagedtocost1.66billion(US$25million)in1987,thefinalprojectcostin2009was
7.21billion(US$110million).

Trainingestablishment

Admission
Potentialcandidatestotheundergraduateofficertraineeprogramof
theIndianNavyapplythroughtheNationalDefenceAcademy.
NDAcadetsoptingtojointheNavycompletethreeyearsofjoint
trainingatNDA,KhadakwaslawiththeArmyandAirForce
cadets.TheythentransfertoINAforthenextoneyear.Candidates
alsojointhrough10+2NavyTechEntry.Cadetshavetheoptionto
majorinElectronics&CommunicationEngineering,Mechanical
EngineeringorNavalArchitectureandareawardedaBachelorof
Technologydegreeupongraduation.Upongraduation,cadetsare
commissionedasSubLieutenantsintheNavy.Cadetsmajoringin
NavalArchitecturehavetoundergoanadditional6monthsof
trainingattheNavalDockyard,Visakhapatnamaftergraduation.
Theyalsohavetheoptiontoenrollforadditionalpostgraduate
specialisationinthefieldattheIndianInstituteofTechnology,Delhi.
AdmissiontoINAasgraduateofficertraineesoftheIndianNavyis
conductedthroughawrittenexaminationconductedbytheUPSC,
followedby5daysoftestingandinterviewsconductedbytheServices
SelectionBoard(SSB).Thesecovergeneralaptitude,psychological
testing,medicaltests,teamskillsaswellasphysicalandsocialskills.
FortheShortServiceCommission(SSC)officertrainees,selectionis
throughmerit.SSCofficershavetheoptiontoapplyforpermanent
commissionbasedontheirperformanceandtrackrecord.Graduating
officersoftengoonforadditionaltrainingorspecialisationinareas
suchassurfacewarfare,submarinewarfare,navalaviation,etc.atother
Navalschools.

Marinisedcamps

Thetrainingzonecontainsthemainacademicbuildingcomplex,aswell
asphysicaltraining,aquaticsandoutdoortrainingcomplexes,auditoriums,afiringrange,fields,cadet'sMess
andcadet'ssquadrons.Themainacademicbuildingcomplexissituatedonthehighestpointoftheacademy.It
includestheServiceandTechnicalTrainingwings,laboratories,workshops,library,andan1800capacity
auditorium.Theacademyacceptsupto1200cadetsforofficertrainingeachyear.Thisincludesinterimtraining
facilitiesfortheIndianCoastGuard.

Location
TheIndianNavalAcademy,Ezhimalaislocatedapproximately35kmnorthofKannurand135kmsouthof
Mangalore,onthewestcoastofpeninsularIndia.ThenearestrailwaystationisatPayyanur,10kmaway.
PayyanurisalsoonNationalHighway17betweenMangaloreandKannur.Thenearestmajorciviland
internationalairportisatMangalore,about145kmnorth.ThenewKannurInternationalAirport,about60km
southwillbereadybymid2017.TheINAisdividedintothreezonesaTrainingzone,anAdministration
zoneandanAccommodationzone.IthasalighthousetheMt.DillyLighthouseinitspremises.

TheadministrationzoneconsistsoftheAdministrativeComplex,the
navalhospitalINHSNavjivani,logisticscomplex,motortransport
complexandthecampusfirestation.

Accommodation
Theacademyhasuniformedandcivilianstafffortrainingand
administrativesupport.Ithad161officers,47professors/lecturers,502
sailorsand557defenseciviliansin2010.Thecampusincludes
accommodationfacilitiesforstaffandtheirfamilies,withcapacityof
about4000.

INHSNavjivani
INHSNavjivani,whichwascommissionedon12December2012,isa
64bednavalhospitalinthecampusthatprovideshealthcaretocadets,
staffandnavyveterans.

Cadetlife
Kannur,Kerala
Onreportingattheacademy,cadetsareassignedtosquadrons.
Currentlythereare6squadrons,namelyAchiever,Braveheart,cheetah,
Daredevil,EagleandFighter,whichareplannedtoincreaseupto16.Eachsquadronconsistsoffourdivisions
withapproximately50cadetsineachdivision.Eachdivisioniscommandedbyacommissionedofficerofthe
rankofLieutenant,responsibleformonitoring,guidanceandcounsellingofthecadets.Thesquadronisheaded
byanofficeroftherankofLieutenantCommander.Cadetsareaccommodatedinindividualroomsinthe
Squadrons,thoughclassroominstructionandoutdoortrainingareconductedseparatelydependingonthe
cadet'sselectedmajorsandspecialisations.Throughthe4yearsofacademytenure,thecadetsaretrainedinall
aspectslikephysicaltraining,swimming,drill,sportsproficiency,equitation,xcountryrunningandvarious
servicerelatedsubjects.
