Designing Training Plans and Learning Objectives

Jack Shaw
Key points of the article
To have an effective training design, one must align learning objectives with training goals.

Insights and comments

I think that it is true for all kinds of trainings. It has to take into consideration the learning objectives of the
audience, and not just a template of what a particular training should be. The training has to be tailor-fit
for the audience and the company. It has to take into consideration, the Mission and Vision statements of
the company, as well as its core values. The trainer also has to ask the audience their personal goals in
attending the training.
Lastly, execution is everything. A particular training is only 1% theory, and 99% execution. Everything
might look good as a plan in paper. However, it may or may not be the case during the actual
presentation. The audience might respond differently, or they may not identify with the concepts
presented or how they are presented, or maybe they might not be interested in the activities done.
Whatever the case may be, it is important to anticipate those things by being extra diligent in doing
research about the audience. It is also important to align your goals as a facilitator with the common
personal learning objectives of his/her target audience to make a long-term impact on them.

Questions you would like to ask about the article

I would like to ask the following questions, related to my chose article:
1. How will learners' manage time and stress during the learning?
2. How can we verify if each of the learning objectives was reached?

Application of the article in the workplace

We have various trainings where I work, and it has made me realize that trainings go beyond a
mere PowerPoint slide. My division at work is called Arrears Management Team, and during our
enhancement trainings, our trainer/facilitator emphasizes the great importance of teamwork, by letting us
feel the ioompact of it in the function of our work. He lets us do groups activities, share our problems with
each other in an open and non-judgmental environment. In a way, it helps reduce and eliminate existing
conflicts and it promotes an air of empathy within us. This way of training, has taught us the concept of
teamwork by making us realize on an empirical level, the importance of overlooking differences, which
has taught us the values of friendship and acceptance.

This to me the is the most effective way of teaching and training. I can confidently say that we
went out of that training as different people, as better Revenue Seizure Agents, and more importantly, as
good friends.
