ASEAN Heritage Parks conference opens in Myanmar

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental conservation of


Myanmar hosts the 5th ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP5) Conference on 24-27 Oct
2016 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
The regional event aims to bring together the main actors in the AHP
Programme
ASEAN Heritage Parks constitute a network of 38 protected areas that
encompass ecosystems and species that best represent ASEAN.
The 5th AHP Conference is another milestone in the ASEAN Member States
efforts to conserve the regions biodiversity and promoting its sustainable
use.

ASEAN Secretariat holds anti-corruption workshop

As part of efforts to strengthen the ASEAN Secretariat in the area of corporate


governance, an anti-corruption workshop for staff of the Community and
Corporate Affairs Department (CCAD).

ASEAN to localise its vision in rural areas

Focusing on the theme Localizing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals


and ASEAN Community Vision 2025: The Role of Rural Development
Organizations andRural Peoples Organizations,
The meeting identified modalities to build greater synergy and convergence
toward the realization of the goals of the UNs SDG 2030 and ASEANs Vision
2025, particularly those aimed at the betterment of the people in the rural
areas.

ASEAN, UNESCO reinvigorate cooperation

ASEAN and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural


Organization (UNESCO) agreed to deepen their cooperation at the ASEANUNESCO Joint Meeting.
The meeting identified three priority clusters in 2017-2018, namely: culture,
communication and information, and environment, science and technology

The Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 (MPAC 2025) aims to realise a
seamlessly and comprehensively connected and integrated ASEAN which

brings improved infrastructure, enhanced technology, lower supply chain cost


and ease of travel for all ASEAN citizens.

ASEAN to deepen closer cooperation on connectivity with Dialogue Partners

The ASEAN Connectivity Coordinating Committee (ACCC) held a consultation


on ASEAN Connectivity with Dialogue Partners , namely Australia, Canada,
China, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, and the
United States of America, to socialise the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity
(MPAC ) 2025 and discuss possible cooperation on Connectivity.

The ASEAN Womens Circle will hold its annual flagship Bazaar, with the
theme One Vision, One Identity, One Community.
The bazaar serves as an ideal showcase of unique and diverse products from
different ASEAN Member States and different parts of Indonesia.

ASEAN raises awareness and enhances understanding of the rights of persons with
disabilities in the region

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR)


conducted a human rights training programme in Bangkok, Thailand.
The training aimed at creating a better understanding on the rights of
persons with disabilities.

ASEAN puppeteers and musicians showcase One ASEAN story

Puppeteers and musicians from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar,


Singapore, Thailand and Japan joined Malaysias artists for the 9 th ASEAN

Puppet Exchange (APEX). They worked together to design the One ASEAN
story, focusing on the ASEAN Economic Community.
Titled APEX Live, the story focuses on the ASEAN Economic Community
while workshops and performances focused on daily life, family and
livelihoods in ASEAN.

ASEAN moves towards a disaster-resilient ASEAN Community

The meetings come after the signing of the ASEAN Declaration on One
ASEAN, One Response at the recent ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Important decisions were made at the meetings to further enhance ASEANs
preparedness and response to disasters, both within and beyond ASEAN.

Netherlands supports capacity building for young ASEAN diplomats

ASEAN and the Netherlands inked an agreement to provide training for young
ASEAN diplomats
The programme to be offered over a four-year period aims to advance the
professional knowledge of young diplomats from ASEAN Member States and
officials of the ASEAN Secretariat.
Topics to be covered by the programme include regional integration, dispute
resolution, connectivity and cultural cooperation.

Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) Meeting

The Thirteenth Meeting of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and


Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) was convened in
Singapore.
Three Representatives for womens rights and three Representatives for
childrens rights were welcomed as new Representatives from six Member
States to succeed the previous ones who have completed their term of office
The Meeting was convened under the leadership of the new chairperson
Mdm. Lily DoriantyPurba, ACWC Indonesia representative for womens rights.

ASEAN establishes Coordinating Centre to address trans-boundary animal and
zoonotic diseases

In Southeast Asia, meat consumption has almost doubled since the early
1980s, and the demand for livestock products is projected to grow by at least
3.5 percent annually by the year 2020
ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Animal Health and Zoonoses (ACCAHZ) aims
to provide a platform for cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member
States and with relevant stakeholders in the efforts to enhance prevention,
control and eradication of trans-boundary animal and zoonotic diseases in the
region.

ASEAN youth debate on human rights

ASEAN youth met in Kuala Lumpur to exchange their views on human rights
issues such as abortion, child marriages, climate change, the rights of
migrant workers and the right to peace.
Their meeting was part of the Youth Debate on Human Rights themed
:Realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Context of
the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) 2012.
The 3rd Youth Debate specifically aimed to raise awareness and enhance
understanding among the ASEAN youth on the AHRD and how AHRD
connects to the 2030 Afenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):,

ASEAN promotes competitive workforce through skills competition

The 11th ASEAN Skills Competition was concluded on Wednesday, Sept. 28. A
total of 98 gold, silver and bronze medals were competed for among the 276
technical vocational training and education (TVET) students from ASEAN
Member States.

As for the best of nations, Cambodia won for electrical installation, Indonesia
for IT software solution for business, Lao PDR for cooking, Malaysia for
automobile technology, Myanmar for plumbing and heating, the Philippines
for mechanical engineering design CAD, Singapore for information network
cabling, Thailand for restaurant service, and Vietnam for CNC maintenance.
The biennial ASEAN Skills Competition started in 1995 in Malaysia as a
regional platform of vocational education and skills excellence. Its next
edition will be hosted by Thailand in 2018.

ASEAN to strengthen its health response to disasters

A plan to increase ASEAN capacity for health response during disasters


gained headway with the first regional meeting for The Project to Strengthen
the ASEAN Regional Capacity in Diaster Health Management held in Bangkok
The three-year project aims to develop regional mechanisms to ensure rapid
and effective health sector response to disasters through the mobilisation of
health resources of ASEAN Member States.
The project is part of a proposed ten-year vision in disaster health
management (DHM), an outcome of a survey on the status of disaster/
emergency medicine system in the ASEAN region in 2014-2015.
The project will be guided by the One ASEAN, One Response ASEAN
Responding to Disasters as One in the Region and Outside the Region,
During the period 2004 to 2014, the ASEAN region recorded more than 50
percent of the total global disaster fatalities. In the last decade the region
suffered from two high-impact, large scale disasters that captured the
attention of the world namely the 2008 Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and the
2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
