Introduction to satellite communication

By definition, a satellite is the object that goes around a larger object.
Example of natural satellite is a moon.
Satellite communication is a communication system that uses satellite
as the center for transmission between two ground terminal stations
which are at a distance away from each other.
A communication satellite:
It is held in space by orbital mechanics.
It receives microwave signals from one point of the earth,
amplifies the received signal, and re-transmits the signal to
another part of the earth.

Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) Satellite

GEO satellite is positioned at approximately 36,000
kilometers or 22,300 miles above the earth surface.
GEO satellite is aligned with the equator and
appears to be fixed over one spot above the
equator.
Applications :
Internet Broadband Service
Broadcasting Service
Other communication services

Footprint of Thaicom-4
By definition, footprint is the geographic area towards which a satellite downlink
antenna directs its signal or conversely the area from which the satellite is visible
from the surface of the earth.

Thaicom-4 satellite :
Footprint of Thaicom-4 is usually called as Beam.
Thaicom-4s beams cover 14 countries in South
Asia, Asia Pacific and Oceanic region.

How location in the footprint (beam) is related with the power

of received signal

An earth station which is located at the

center of the beam has an advantage on
the received and transmitted signal
compared to another located at the edge
of the beam.
