CHAPTER 1 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
1.1 Charateristic and Spesifications of The Product
Based on concept screening, and scoring concept, we have came to a conclusion that the
concept of laminating adhesive water based with 1 component dry lamination is the best
concept so far and can be developed into desired product. The next step is describing the
product specifically to answer the consumers needs.

1.1.1 Product Positioning

The existing Laminating Adhesives product that we chose as a comparison is based on
the methods in the market. They are Tacelac, Hibond, Liofol, and Ribon which are one
component Solvent-Based, two components Solvent-Based, one component WaterBased, and two components Water-Based.
Additional explanation:
Fast Drying :
a. TACELAC drying of the solvent occurs in temperature 45oC and pressure in
short period of time.
b. HIBOND drying of the solvent occurs in temperature 45oC and pressure in
short period of time
c. LIOFOL drying of the solvent occurs in temperature 40oC and pressure in
short period of time
d. ROBOND drying of the solvent occurs in temperature 50oC and pressure in
short period of time
e. Our Product drying of the solvent occurs in temperature 40oC and pressure in
short period of time
Easiness :
a. TACELAC doesnt need further mixing and easy to control the flow of
adhesive during application because its consist only one component.
b. HIBOND needs further mixing and hard to control the flow of adhesive
during application.

c. LIOFOL doesnt need further mixing and very easy to control the flow of
adhesive during application.
d. ROBOND needs further mixing and hard to control the flow of adhesive
during application.
e. Our product doesnt need further mixing and easy to control the flow of
adhesive during application because its consist only one component.

Based on the analysis of the conceptual mapping above, we can conclude that the
advantages of our product concepts are fast curing time, low viscosity, low coating
quantity, easy to use, and fast drying. Many of existing products that has good
advantages based on the criteria, but only our product that has many of good criteria,
which is seven criteria from nine criteria. So, it can be concluded that although our
product doesnt have the highest score on every criterion, but for overall it has the
highest advantage among the product compared in the chart.

Specification Composition
in the
Product

The final specification of product above can be achieved by determine the suitable
ingredients for the product. For laminating adhesive, there are 2 cores or active
ingredients to be used. The first is the polymer used to create crosslink bond with
substrate in the lamination film. The second core ingredient is the solvent used. Solvent
that is selected for the product must have high compatibility with the polymer used in
the product. The other ingredients used in lamination product are additives in order to
enhance product performance to its optimal.
Polymers used in our laminating adhesive can be classified into two polygomer groups.
The first one is isocyanate-containing polyurathane which is a prepolymer that has
isocyanate-functionalized group. This polymer is prior to create crosslink bond for the
substrates. The second one is a compound comprises of high functionality polyol
containing at least two primary OH groups in a molecule. The polymer in the second
compound is used as hardener for the adhesive mixture. Polyester and/or polyether
polyols are used as primary compound in the second polymer. The key determining the
good quality of laminating adhesive is the mixing ratio of the first and second polymer.
Too high concentration of first polymer can resulted into low value of viscosity, while
too much of second polymer resulted into high value of viscosity.
Solvent used in water-based adhesive is water. However, the application of water-based
solvent must be added with some organic co-solvent in order to increase the solubility
of the polymers. This aim is to increase the dispersity of polymers in the solution.
Additives plays huge role in laminating adhesive. Some additives are used as stabilizer
in order to increase the pot life of the product. Curing agent may also be added in order
to help fastened the reaction of unreacted monomers. However, addition of curing agent
may resulted into high cost. The alternative of curing problem is to use high molecular
weight of polymer in order for it to reacts faster. Another crucial additive is antifoaming agent to prevent bubble formation in the adhesive. Fillers may also be used to
enhance the product chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. The formulation of
our laminating adhesive product as follows:

7.1. Product Positioning

Concept positioning is comparing our product concept with existing product. We use
Conceptual Mapping as the method, which is a chart that describes the position of our concept
based on some criteria. On the conceptual mapping, we can compare our product design to
another existing product by seeing its position in the map. The existing Laminating Adhesives
product that we chose as a comparison is based on the methods in the market. Four existing
products that we chose as comparison are Tacelac, Hibond, Liofol, and Ribon which are one
component Solvent-Based, two components Solvent-Based, one component Water-Based, and
two components Water-Based.

1.2 Prototype
1.2.1 Brand and Motto
a. Brand
Our laminating adhesive for packaging have brand W-bond. Te meaning of the
brand is intended to inform consumers that the product has distintive solvent to
bonding the polymer.

b. Motto
Strong and Less Thickness
This motto of Strong and Less Thickness means that the product is strong and
need a bit adhesive to make a strong bonding.

1.3 Patent Planing

After we design the product, the most important thing that we have to do is making our
product patented. Minimum requirements for filling a patent application in Indonesia are :
1. Power of Attorney (no legalization)
2. Assignment of Invention (no Legalization)
3. Patent Spesification, Claims and abstract in English (to be translate in to Indonesia
Language)
4. Drawings ( if any)
5. Priority Documents (if Convention priority is clained)
