CHAPTER 1:
1.1 Introduction
1.2 Background
With the rising demand of motorcycles every year, the industry shows a huge
potential in both the local and international market. Motorcycle Industry estimates
show that last year more than 800000 motorcycles were sold in the country. The
industry has been experiencing a healthy growth rate of around 30% per year for
the past 4-5 years. Pakistan came at number seven with a production of more
than 800,000 units of motorcycles constituting to 2% of the global total. Currently
Atlas Honda in Pakistan hold first place in terms of sale and market share, the
other Japanese brands being manufactured in Pakistan include Yamaha and
Suzuki. According to the report of motor branch of Excise and Taxation
Faisalabad sale of motorcycles is increased by 27% in 2009 as compared with
2008 only in Faisalabad and surrounding areas. Demand is increased and
environment changed rapidly so the motorcycle manufacturing companies try to
use imaginative systems of distribution to provide the product at right place and
3
time to make the customer satisfied and gain a competitive advantage over other
market competitors. In the motorcycle market the Atlas Honda has the major
share and Yamaha motorcycle falls behind with the second largest market share.
So keeping all these aspects in mind I try to compare the distribution strategies
of Honda motorcycle with its most competitive Yamaha in the Faisalabad district
and surroundings.
