WITH ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

FIELD INTENSITY CHARTS

ANSWERS TO EXERCISE QUESTIONS

1. Given a 1kW AM station with frequency of 706 kHz,
determine the distance to the point where the field strength
is measured as 0.1mV/m (100 microvolts/m) if the
intervening terrain is 10mmho/m.
Given:
f = 705 kHz c = 10 m/m
P = 1 kW D = ?
FS = 0.1 mV/m
Solution:
FSdBmV = 20 log (0.1) = -20 dBmV
Answer:
D = 200 km

2. Given a 1kW AM station with frequency of 1100 kHz,

determine the distance to the point where the field strength
is measured as 0.03mV/m (30 microvolts/m) if the
intervening terrain is 20mmho/m.
Given:
f = 1100 kHz c = 20 m/m
P = 1 kW D = ?
FS = 0.03 mV/m
Solution:
FSdBmV = 20 log (0.03) = -30.46 dBmV ~ -30 dBmV
Answer:
D = 280 km

3. Given the same transmitter in A but the power is raised to

20 kilowatts, what is the new distance to the point where the
field strength is measured as 0.1mV/m.

Given:
f = 706 kHz c = 10 m/m
P = 20 kW D = ?
FS = 0.1 mV/m
Solution:
PdBk = 10log(20) = 13 dBk
FSdBmV = 20log(0.1) = -20 dBmV
Answer:
D = 340 km

4. Given the same transmitter in B, determine the field

strength at 100 miles away if the intervening terrain is as
follows: 10mmho/m from 0 to 50 miles, 20mmho/m from 50
to 100 miles, 2mmho/m beyond 100 miles.
Given:

f = 1100 kHz
P = 1 kW
D = 100 miles
Solution:
