Big Idea:
PS 2 Interacting With Others in Ways That Respect Individual and Group
Differences

Learning Objective:
K - 1st - I can identify what a bystander and an upstander are; I can can
name three things to do if I see bullying happen or if it happens to me.
2nd - 4th - I can idenfity what a target, bystander, and upstander are; I can
name three things to do if I see bullying happen or if it happens to me.

Materials Needed:

Computer - Internet (Go Noodle, Brainpop Jr., Charlie Brown-Bully, So Funny I


Forgot to Laugh)

Formative Assessment (acceptable evidence):


Students will be given a post survey to determine their understanding of the
lessons

Lesson Preparation:
Essential Questions:
K-4 - What is the difference between a target, bystander, and upstander?
Engagement/Hook:
Students will be verbally quizzed on their understanding of tattling,
reporting, teasing, a conflict, a mean moment, and bullying.

Instructional Procedures:
Counselor(s):
1. Counselor will ask students to define tattling, reporting, teasing, a conflict,
a mean moment and bullying.
2. Counselor will introduce the terms target, bystander, and upstander.
3. Counselor will have students define what they think each term means.
4. Counselor will give students the correct definition along with examples of
each to ensure students understanding of the terms.
5. Counselor will engage students in a conversation about what they can do
if they see bullying happen (bystander or upstander) or if it is happening to
them.
6. Counselor will show students a video (Charlie Brown - Bully, or So Funny I
Forgot to Laugh), and will have a discussion with the students about what
they see in the video (reporting, tattling, teashing, mean moment, conflict,
and/or bullying; bystander or upstander).
Students:
1. Students will provide definitions of the terms based on their current
knowledge using information they received from the previous lesson.

2. Students will listen as the counselor introduces the new terms to them.
3. Students will provide their ideas about what they think each of the terms
means.
4. Students will listen as counselor provides them with the correct definition
along with examples.
5. Students will participate in conversation about what they can do if they
see bullying happen (bystander or upstander) or if bullying happens to them.
6. Students will watch the video and participate in the identification of the
various things they see in the video (reporting, tattling, teashing, mean
moment, conflict, and/or bullying; bystander or upstander).
