Biomedical Engineering Senior Design

BIM 110L: Prototyping Lab

Fall Quarter 2016
Course Introduction:
110L is the laboratory part of your 3-quarter senior design series. The objective is to provide you with training
in the tools, and introduce you to the resources that you will likely use during the completion of your teambased design projects in 110A&B. In BIM 110L you will receive guided instruction on the use of CAD
(SolidWorks) tools for engineering drafting, and complete a quarter-long machining project qualifying you to
use the Engineering Fabrication Laboratory for device prototyping. You will also be introduced to the
prototyping tools available in the TEAM Lab housed in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
EFL Learning Objectives:
1. Learn safe use of machining tools.
2. Apply drafting and fabrication techniques to device prototyping.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of design for manufacturability constraints.
Machining Lab:
You will be enrolled in one of the following machine labs to be held in Bainer 1220:
Thurs 9:00-11:50
Thurs 1:10-4:00
Thurs 5:10-8:00
Fri 9:00-11:50
Fri 1:10-4:00
These labs are to begin the first week of instruction Thurs, Sept 22 - Fri, Sept 23.
Attendance is mandatory during the first week of instruction. Important safety information will be covered and
failure to be there could result in your being disqualified from using the lab.
Please come prepared to begin working that day as we will start cutting material for projects. Proper attire
includes long pants and shoes that completely cover the legs and feet. Long hair should be tied back. No loose
fitting clothing or jewelry. Safety glasses will be provided.
The expectation for the machine lab is that you attend, demonstrate an understanding of machining tools and
their proper use, and complete the project qualifying you to use the Engineering Fabrication Laboratory.
Failure to complete the project or having unexcused absences will result in a reduction of your final
grade as detailed below.
Evaluation:
The lab will be graded as follows:
Attendance/ participation
Quizzes
Exit exam
Machining project

20%
20%
10%
50%

Attendance: Attendance in the EFL will be tracked and unexcused absences will impact you negatively. You
will also be penalized if you show up after instruction has begun as it is not realistic or practical to expect the
instructor to start over or repeat their instruction for you alone. Unexcused absences will result in a deduction
of 10 pts. Tardies will result in a deduction of 5 pts.
Quizzes: There will be 4 quizzes covering the handouts on safety and the machining tools.

Exit exam: To be given at the end of the quarter, this will be a comprehensive review of the content covered by
the quizzes.
Machining project: The qualification project will be graded on the completion, functionality, and aesthetics of
the microscope. You will not be penalized for minor cosmetic flaws.
