OMMS 15 Exam Complex Maritime Safety Communication (Jan. 25, 2016)


In the Communication Department of your company you are responsible for updating knowledge/skills
of the Senior Deck Officers. You want to instruct them on why to apply Maritime English standardised
language/standardised formats in ship-to-shore contacts.
Study the following three examples of a VTS communication. Your tasks are given after the
three examples.

What is the advantage of Dialogue 2 compared with Dialogue 1:


Dialogue 1 and 2 both of them are using Unformatted dialogue. But there are
some differences. In Dialogue 2, the Captain of MV Rostock and VTS
Simland Traffic use better English than in Dialogue 1.
In Dialogue 2, they use English with Standard Marine Communication
Phrases.
In Dialogue 1, we can see non-formal Maritime English such ,,Aye-aye, How
deep are you drawing. And there is one miss understanding caused by poor
communication, when VTS Simland Traffic said 18, the Captain of MV
Rostock think it was 80. In my opinion the VTS Simland Traffic said ,, Eight
teen, they should said ,,One Eight to avoid miss communication like that.

.1 What is the advantage of Dialogue 3 compared with Dialogue 2:


Dialogue 3 use the MAREP Format, this format make communication
between MV Rostock and VTS Simland Traffic more efficient, quick, clear,
and simple than Unformatted Dialogue
.2 What could be the disadvantage of Dialogue 3:
Using MAREP Format need more knowledge of MarEng. If the Captain of the
ship and/or VTS Traffic do not have this knowledge, it will causing the
problem during communication.

Which of the three formats would you advise to be used and why:
For me, MAREP Format is the best format to make communication. Because
this format make communication between Ship and VTS more safety, efficient
and simple.
Moreover, if there is a law that mention all communication between Ship and
VTS should use MAREP Format, it can make all VTS officers and Captains
have the excellent Maritime English which also can reduce miss

communication and accident caused by poor communication.
