Virtual Work Method (review example in class)

Use the virtual work method to calculate the vertical deflection
at point C of the beam shown below. EI=6x103 kN.m2.

Conservation of Energy
The p
principle
p of conservation of energy
gy
The work performed on an elastic structure in
equilibrium by statically (gradually) applied
external forces equals the work done by
internal forces ((or the strain energy

the structure)

Energy Methods

Strain Energy
The strain energy of a structure is its capacity for doing
work.
The term strain energy is attributed to the energy that a
structure has because of its deformation.

Beams

Gradual increase of the load (P) causes gradual

increase of the internal moment (M) acting on
element (dx) of the shown beam , while the cross
sections of element (dx) rotate by (d) with
respect to each other. Hence, the strain energy
stored in element (dx) is given by:

Frames

The frame may be subjected to axial forces as well as bending

moments. Then, the total strain energy of the frame is expressed
as the sum of the strain energy due to axial forces (truss) and the
strain energy due to bending (beam). Hence, (U) for the frame is
given by:

Castiglianos Second Theorem

Statement of the theorem:

For linear elastic structures, the partial derivative of the
strain energy in a structure with respect to an applied force
(or couple) is equal to the displacement (or rotation) of that
force (or couple) along its line of action. Mathematically, can
be written as:

Castiglianos Second Theorem

Procedure for Trusses
1.

If an external load is acting on the given truss at the joint and in direction
of the desired deflection, then designate this load as the variable (P) and go
to step 2.
2 otherwise,
otherwise apply a dummy load (P) at the joint and in the
direction of the desired deflection.

2.

Determine the axial force (F) in each member of the truss in terms of (P).

3.

Differentiate member forces (F) with respect to (P) to get (F/P).

4.

Evaluate (F) and the partial derivatives (F/P) by substitute the numeric
value of (P) or set P=0 if it is a dummy load.

5.

Apply Castiglianos second theorem expression to determine the desired

deflection, i.e.
F FL

P AE
A positive value indicates that the deflection is in the same direction of (P).
