Satisfaction." Education Full Text [H.W. Wilson]. Journal of College Counseling, 201.

In this database, it mentions the typical struggles first generation students confront, but
also the challenges from social and cultural transitions. According to the article, due to
these students often coming from a low income family or from ethnic and racial cultures
they are entitled to go through challenges, causing them to get stressed more. These
challenges interfere with their critical thinking and their overall academic success. Social
support is also covered in this article because it is a feature that adds stress toward the
students coming from a low income and minority family.
This sources is useful because it reflects on the part of how these students face challenges
being involved in a family with not only parents not going to college, but also with
different cultural values. Social support from the family is important in non-collegeeducated parents because itll help distress students from what they struggle already at
college.
For example, in the article it mentions how these students have to ... interact with two
cultures: their home culture of less educated individuals and the academic culture
This piece of information is very useful because it relates to my situation being a first
generation student and coming from a low income, ethnic family.

Home." Cal Alumni Association. UC Berkeley, 2015. Web. 05 Nov. 2016.
The main argument of this article speaks out about how first generation students struggle
starting college, as well as getting through college. Struggles include not just the student
itself, but the campus they chose to attend and even the students parents. It also
addresses how or what the students can do in these situations. For example, if a student's
fears of asking for help and have no one to go to, ... they can easily fall through the
cracks because of the most basic misunderstandings.

This source is useful because it comes from a from a first generation student who has
gone through the struggles, is a minority, low income, and included statistics involving
other issues in the first generation community. That will help me with evidence on my
topic proposal. The sources is reliable because it also comes from a minority, first
generation student and how it was like with not much support from her family moving
away from home to go to college and the transitioning.
This article fits into my research because it provides data on many statistics involving
first generation students in college like how many students actually graduate, drop out,
and how long it takes them too. Thatll help me with my research project by using it as
evidence. It also provides on how students get help when going through these struggles.

The purpose of this video was to share with the world what its like to be a first
generation. The three interviewees talk about their struggles and share how they feel
about being labeled first generation. An interesting point that one of the interviewee
stated in this video was, I know some people say being a first generation makes it easier
to get into college. Other people had other resources their whole life that I didn't have.
Meaning those whose parents did go to college get a firsthand experience resource of tips
on what to do, how to apply, and important things to do unlike whose parents do.
This source is useful because it seeing the video, you see the emotion of the students
when speaking about this topic and how they feel about being labeled a first generation
student. This information is reliable because it lets out the experiences going through
college with no preparation from the parents. The goal of this source was to let other
students know that overcoming the struggles will be worth it. Overall, it was to motivate
the first generation students
This fits into my research because I will be doing a mini documentary about this topic
and it gives me an idea on how to think on how to do it. This made me feel more
confident toward my topic knowing that these students in the video are overcoming these
challenges and motivating the discourse community its possible to get through college.
