VR in Special Education

1. VR does create learning opportunities that cannot be achieved through other means,
because with social skills its hard to create a program within schools to accurately
portray them. With VR its possible to have situational contexts that you cant create
with role play, also VR makes the situations real in a sense that other programs lack. The
learning opportunities can exceed those that can be created in a classroom environment
with authenticity.
2. Yes, I think that VR can add significant value to a lesson with the correct implementation.
VR can cover much more situational or different reality based concepts in a real
looking environment that just having notes on a blackboard can do. I think it allows for
information to be placed into real life situations instead of just a textbook. The
information with VR can come to life and be more meaningful to students who cant see
the importance or application of it all.
3. I think if VR is implemented in a beneficial and useful way, then it can help the learning
process, but if its not, it may just be wasted time. I think that in order to for it to help the
learning process it has to add a new dimension to learning that cant already be
experienced in the classroom. Like the article on using VR to improve social skills, the
software was able to use a short amount of time to effectively teach something that would
have taken much longer had it only been done in the traditional way. I think that VR can
be beneficial towards my job of teaching curriculum by immersing students in a new
environment of information. I think it can help teach students the application of
information that theyve already learned. It may save time in the long run for teaching
concepts that may be hard to learn traditionally.
4. I would tell this teaching veteran that VR creates an environment that learning is possible
there, but not in actual reality. Children learn best by doing or by being; therefore, they

should be able to experience other cultures first hand instead of learning about them out
of a textbook. VR also increases students motivation by being a source of fun and
engagement in the matter of learning. Collaboration with VR also fosters social
integration of learners, students come to learn about different skill sets that they never
knew that they had. It can accommodate students with different needs and learning styles.
VR is also a creative outlet for students to use their imagination and break boundaries in
traditional education. The pros of integrating VR out way the cons.
