OVERVIEW OF THE VOYAGER

Company requirement for maintaining this software and corrections to charts and
relevant paper publications on board have been modified on ship where this software
has been installed. The changes are briefly mentioned below.
Voyager is a fully automated on board chart management system that provides the
mariner with a personalized database of the on board charts, publications, and
Notice To Mariners organized in a convenient folio system.

Voyager has been approved by many administrations including Bermuda Registry of

Shipping, Liberia Bureau of Maritime Affairs and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency.
The voyager service provides weekly notices to mariners every Thursday, with
tracings, blocks etc: The received data is almost similar to receiving paper Notice to
Mariners. The ship should immediately advise Thomas Gunn whenever any new
charts are purchased or discarded in order to update the ships folio(s). (In case you
have advised Thomas Gunn and they have not updated the system you can still see
the corrections for the chart on the left hand side of the screen go to catalogues and
then select charts and you will see all current charts as in BA chart catalogue on the
right hand side. Right click on the chart and you will see all available corrections. Do
not order any charts and/or publications for out of voyage region areas-you will have
to correct them.
UPDATING NP133A CHART CORRECTION LOG
a. The paper copy of NP133A is not required to be maintained, provided records and
information, previously recorded in NP 133A, that may be required on
surveys/inspections to satisfy passage planning requirements, can be produced. The
software allows for this with the weekly summary printout.
b. In order to dispense with the hard copy NP133A, charts held before voyager was
introduced into service onboard, will need to be entered into the system so that all
previous corrections are shown. The remaining procedures in this section apply to
vessels on which this has not been done, and therefore need to maintain the
NP133A. Likewise, references to NP133A in other sections of these instructions only
apply when the hard copy is being maintained.
c. On receiving the NTM file the chart correction log NP133A should first be updated
for all charts on board.
d. The first part of NP133A should be updated with the date when the relevant NTM
was received on board.
e. The details of new charts and publications should be entered in the next section.
Correct only for the chart folio on board. In case you need to order a new chart out of
your region or see details for a particular chart go to Catalogue-charts you will be
able to see the latest chart number, details, edition and scale, of all charts in the
admiralty catalogue updated for the latest editions.
f. The relevant correction number should be entered against the chart number, in ink
(blue or black- year in red ink). When a particular row is completed with the chart
correction data (in the chart correction log) make a copy of that section, in Microsoft
Office Excel, print, cut out and paste one end of it on the page. Commence correction
on this new section from the current year. And any T&P number should be entered in
the last column of the chart correction log on the right hand side in pencil.

CORRECTING THE CHART AND CHART CATALOGUE

a. The relevant chart should be corrected for small and T&P corrections first for
intended voyage and then for all the remaining charts on board. If your data base of
charts on board is updated and correct then every week you will find the charts that
are required to be corrected for a particular week undercorrection summary- weekly
corrections-on the voyager.
b. The correction number for the relevant chart should be struck off in the chart
correction log after the correction is applied into the chart. On the voyager software
the correction should be updated by clicking on the box in the applied column of the
relevant chart on the weekly chart correction list. The date/time will automatically
be updated.
c. If blocks or tracing are to be used-then print them off and paste the blocks on the
chart. Pls file all the tracings used in the consecutive order. Tracings for at least
1years should be maintained in hard copies, separated by week. All chart corrections
done on board should be in magenta ink only.
d. It is not necessary to print off the written part of each correction if they can be
readily remembered or read off the screen and applied correctly. Care should be
taken to avoid making mistakes. (It will be helpful if the corrections can be copied to
your personal computer and read off on the chart table while making the corrections
or using a computer near the chart table if one is available. In case its not possible
and there are multiple corrections you may print off the correction and discard it
after applying it on the chart.
e. Printing of blocks and tracings- are printed off from abode acrobat reader files so
ensure than the scaling is changed to None. Dithered screening should be turned
on, and resolution to 300 dpi. Colour blocks are printer on normal A4 paper of 80
gsm. Colour cartridge should be available for printing blocks.
f. After applying all the corrections for a particular chart, double check that all
corrections have been applied by selecting the relevant chart from the tree-view
navigation control on the left hand side of the screen, right click on the chart in
question and review the list of all corrections applicable and if they have been
applied.
g. The correction on the Voyager should not be updated as applied unless the chart
correction is completed on bottom left hand side of the chart and the chart correction
log NP133A is updated.

h. Notices affecting the chart catalogue should be applied on the relevant page of the
chart catalogue and the inner page where the corrections are logged should be
updated in blue/black ink. Both the left and right hand side of the catalogue must be
corrected-specially where chart boundaries are changed.

T&P CORRECTIONS AND T&P FILE

a. Summary of T&P corrections for all charts cannot be printed with this software, as
it is too large and not required.
b. All T&P corrections in-force can be viewed and should be printed off and
maintained in the T&P file- under the relevant sections. (Under geographical index
with 26 different sections).
c. T&P corrections should be entered in pencil on the right hand side of the Chart. In
the Chart correction log NP133A, enter the T&P correction in pencil under the column
T&P corrections. On the charts in use, the corrections should be entered in pencil at
its geographical position with a brief summary and a reference to the T&P notice
number.
d. Cancelled T&P corrections can be viewed on the Voyager under the column
cancelled will be marked True. The cancelled T&P numbers should be removed from
the T&P file, rubbed out from the chart and the chart correction log NP133A.
e. You will receive the annually summary of NTM electronically in the Voyager each
year in January. Active T&P's for your chart folio should be printed out on the 1st of
each month and compared with the corrections to ensure all corrections have been
applied. This should be filed in beginning of the T&P file. Only the updated latest list
should be maintained in the T&P file, all the old lists should be removed.
SAILING DIRECTIONS CORRECTIONS
a. All current Sailing Directions on board are to be corrected. Sailing Directions
should cover the whole intending voyage area, not just departure and arrival ports.
b. List of amendments for Sailing Directions are published quarterly and available on
the Voyager it should be printed off and included in the beginning of the Sailing
direction correction file. The sailing direction file should be separated by Sailing
Direction numbers.
c. All relevant sailing direction correction should be printed off and filed in the sailing
direction file against the relevant volume number. The inside page of the sailing
direction should be updated with the week number of the correction and the page
affected in blue/black pen (No other colour to be used); below the year of correction.

(Do not enter year). Ex- To enter week 2 correction on page 89. Enter under 2010
year 2/89.
d. In the sailing direction book the page and section where the correction is affected
should be marked with a line on the side in pencil. (As suggested by
NP294 How to keep your admiralty charts .)
e. The Sailing direction corrections should not be pasted or corrected in the Sailing
directions itself. (As suggested by NP294 How to keep your admiralty charts .) But be
kept in file as described in C above.
f. After receiving the annually summary of NTM electronically in the Voyager each
year in January the Sailing Direction file should be updated by removing all the
corrections of the previous year and only filing the corrections for the current year.
g. If you have the Voyager software then scroll down on the left hand side to General
Information and click on it on it and you will see on the right hand side right at the
bottom all the annual summaries (NP247) for the last two years.
h. Sailing directions should be read in consultation with the Sailing Directions
corrections file and Annual Summary; to ensure all the corrections have been
reviewed.
