A special word ahout decorative lighting

Today, area lightiflg is no longer purely
urilitrrian. Use of decordlive lrghting's
to add beauty and
expanding rapidly

plazas, malls,
interest to buildings,
parks, and walkways.

The pole-top-mounted units on pages

22 and 23 are ideal for low mounting

heights (10 to 20 feet) and either close

spacing (50

to

100

feet) for uniform

lighting or wide spacing (150 to 200

feet) to create lieht-and-dark effects

that blend with the total appearance

concept. The fixtr.lres are styled by the

noted industrial designer Myron Petten-

gilt for distinctive appearance day and

oight, as well as good lighting efliciency.

For building facades, plazas, and other

architectural effects, door glasses can be
furnished in a number of special colors.
For large projects, General Electric can
create specialty luminaires for unusual
appearance effects. Contact your GE
Sales Office or your franchised agent or

distributor for details.

Selecting equipntent
There are two ways to use this guide:

II you know the equipment you need, go

directly to the appropriate product listing, make your selection, and place your

order with your nearby GE franchised

agent, or distributor.
Ot, knowing only the size and type
area you wish to lieht, yov can follow
the steps below to decide on the best
equipment for your area:
1. Read the "Guide Rules to Good Area

Lighting," below.

2. Refer to the Typical Applications

on

pages 6-9 for recommended lighting

systems for your type area.

4. Consult Fig. 1 on page 4 to find the

watts per square foot for the light
level and light source for your type
area. Multiplythis total by the square
leet in your area to obtain the total

watts of the luminaires you need.

5. Refer to the indicated layout for your
type area in Fig. 2 on page 4 as a
guide to layout and mounting height.
Wbere appropriate, also see the tables
for Recommended Minimum Mounting Herghts and Beam Drmen.ions
and Fig. 5 on Lighting Vertical Surfaces on page 5.

6. With decisions made on light source,

equipment type, mounting height,

etc., turn to the indexed page for the

appropriate product to select the

of

number of fixtures, lamps, poles, and

accessories for the total wattage and

illum ina-

layout for your area. Then place your

order with your local GE franchised

agent or distributor.

EXAMPLE: Suppose you want to light

a shopping-center parking lot 200 feet
by 400 feet. Page 3 recommends 2 to 5
footcandles. AJter referring to the
"Guide Rules" below and the application information on page 6, you decide
to light to 5 footcandles using 10oo-watt

mercury larnps. Figure 1 shows

0.25

watts per square foot are needed.0.25 x

400 x 200 = 20.000 total watts. Thus
your choice is between 20 M-1000, or
P-1000A mercury luminaires or 5 A-4000

Powerglow units. You can now select

equipment from the product information
section of this guide. Be sure to note
pole recommendations given for each
product.

Recommended minimum mounting heights for sporls oreds

The table gives the recommended mini,

mum mounting heights for sports areas
where poles are set back from the area
to be illuminated. Because of special
pole placements, glare possibilities. etc.,
the rule that mounting height should not
be Iess than % the spacing between
poles does not always apply.
For ground sports, minimum mount

SHOPPING CENTERS

Follow the steps below

to

determrne

your lighting needs for shopping centers.

To clarify each step in the solution, a
hypothetical situation is given.
Assume a shopping center set up according to the outline plan at the right.

A-4000 mercury-vapor luminaries will

be used.
1, From page 3, determine desired foot-

candle level. (Assume:

footcafl-

dles,)

plot plan, estimate the

total square footage of the area to be

2. From the

lighted. In this example, we estimate

the area, less the area occupied by
buildings, to be approximately 175,000 square feet.

3. From Fig. 1, page 4, find the watts

per square foot required for lighting

to five footcandles with mercutyvapor lamps. (Answer: 0.25 watts

per sq. ft.)

INDUSTRIAL PARKING AREAS

Listed below are the steps to follow ln

determining your lighlrng needs for industrial parking areas.
Assume an industrial parking area, set
up according to the outline plan at the
right, butted on ofle long side by a build-

ing. 40o-watt mercury vapor lamps,

mounted one per pole, are to be used,

1. Refer to page 3, to find the recommended light level for an industrial
parking lot. (Answer: 1 footcandle.)
2. Refer to Fig. 1, page 4, to find the
required watts per square Ioot to produce one footcandle maintained with
mercury-vapor lamps. (Answer: 0.05
watts per sq. ft.)

3, Calculate area to be lighted. (Answer:

150 ft. x 210 ft. = 31,500sq.ft.)
4. Calculate the watts required. (Answer: 0.05 x 31,500 : 1575 watts.)
5. Calculate number of 400-watt mercury floodlights required. (Ans. 4.)

FACADES

1. Refer to the guidelines on page 5, as

they have been used to arrive at the
recommendations in the table at right.

2. From page 3. determrne the minimum recommended footcandles for

yor.rr application. Assume a building 30 feet high, 100 feet long; dark
field gray brick surface; surroundings
of medium-intensity whitewaY, few
conflicting signs. (Answer: 20 footcandles.)

3. Match this footcandle level to your

building type in the table to the right

to

determine approximate distance

between luminaires. (Answer: 1500-

watt Quartz-Floodo units at 20 feet

or 1000-watt Powerflood units at 25
feet.)
4. Divide rhe dist.rnce between luminaires into buildiflg length to deter-

mine number of luminaires needed.

(Answer: 5 Quartz-Flood (100 -:20)
or 4 Powerflood (100 + 25).)

of 4000-watt
(Answer: Total watts : 175.000 x
0.25:43.750 watts. Number of
luminaires = 43.750 + 4000 = 10.9

4. Calculate the number

luminaires required to light the lot.

or 11 units.
5. Using the thLrmb rules found in Fig. 2,
page 4, determine pole locations.

(Illustration shows one arrangement.

Others are possibie.)

6. Note also the suggested mall lighting
using the A-250 Powerglow. In this
case, the lighting is used for aesthetic

purposes as uell as tor tunclicn.

llence. mou.ltrng he:ghl5. spdcrng.
etc,, are chosen often for other rea
sons than simply producing adequate

lighting. In this instance, we have

chosen 6ve A 250 units spaced 50 feet

apart and mounted on 16 foot poles

to provide 1 Iootcandle maintained.

6.

If

units are to be mounted one per.

pole, what will be the minimum
mounting height? Foltowing the gen-

er:l rules for sp"cing from Fig.2,

page 4, and placing two poles each on

the long sides of the areal maximum
spacing would be 105 feet. Minirnum
mounting height would be 26.5 feet
(105 : 4 ). Sp.cing -f lhe dnrrs rn
the other dimension will be 150 feet.
Minimum mounting height here will
be 35 feel ( I50 : 4). Since thi\ i\
the hieher minimum. consider it the
actual minimum.
Thus, the recommendation is to use
rw^ pole:. erch rvi'h d srngle lum naire,
spaced about 105 feet apart on the open
long side. On the building side, two units
should be wall-mounted 35 feet up and
spaced 105 feet apart.

1. Unique POWR/DOOR assembly

protects your luminaire investment.

When you upgrade to higher light levels

or new light sources such as Multi-Vapor
and Lucalox lamps, just adjust the socket
and change rhe door (if new balldsting is

required). Keep the same basic luminaire. Changing the door is simple:

loosen one captive screw, undo the quickdisconnect plug, and tift ofi the door.
2. Door latch protrudes so it's easier to
grasp. Since the latch is on the door, not

the housing, the door is safer to

open
because you can keep a good grip on ir.

To close. the single-action ldtch closesJ

positive seal every time.

3. The refractor on the GE M 4004.

POWR/DOOR luminaire is the largest

available for these size lamps. This extra

area of glass means less glare, greater
visual comfort.
4. AcLrvated charcodl filler purifies air

entering the optical assembly to cut

cleaning costs and keep light output
high. You only wipe out the reflector

and refractor when you change the lamp.

The filter is self cleaning siflce the hot
air escaping at night tends to bake out
and drive off the impurities.
5. Universally adjustable socket lets you

light distribution patterns for

mercury, Multi-Vapor, and Lucalox
lamps. To change position, just loosen
