CAMPUSES
MUZAFFARABAD
The River Neelum divides the University Campus into two parts i.e. City campus and Chella campus. The City campus is located near the
main business centre of the city while the Chella campus stands on the bank of the river. One can taste the contrast of the hubbub of the
city life, serene and peaceful atmosphere to match ones mood. At night, the city presents a magical view. Overlooking from the top of
a mountain, the city seems a flood of lights, which captivates the viewers. Looking a little away from the city centre, the thinly scattered
lights on mountains appear like little stars and you feel for a while as if the sky has been turned upside down. The cultural life of the city
is as varied as its landscape. If you walk through the city, this contrast becomes too obvious to escape notice.

At present, department offers three Programmes leading to
MSc, MPhil and PhD degrees with specializations in Physical,
Inorganic, Organic, Analytical and Biochemistry.
The courses offered at various levels are tailored according to
the requirements of that particular degree with a view that the
graduating student may become a reliable tool of the dynamic
society.
Seminars and workshops are a regular feature of the academic
activities which not only enable the students to learn more about
the cutting-edge developments in the field of chemistry but also to
inculcate organizational and presentation skills in them.
RESEARCH AREAS
The faculty has a keen interest in research and many of them
are included in the list of Productive Scientists of Pakistan,
published by Pakistan Science Foundation, (PSF). The research
areas are diverse but applied and include natural products,
metal extractions, coordination chemistry, surface chemistry,
environmental chemistry, bio-analytical chemistry, analytical
chemistry, organic synthesis and sonochemistry.
PROGRAMMES AT A GLANCE
MSc PROGRAMME
This two year Programme under semester system has been
introduced since September 2004. In first two semesters,
courses for Physical, Inorganic and Organic chemistry are
compulsory while students have the option to choose from either
Biochemistry or Analytical chemistry. Being conscious of the
relevance of mathematics and computers with chemistry, Applied
Mathematics and Computer for Chemists are also offered as
compulsory courses in 1st and 2nd semester, respectively. In third
semester, students may opt for any of the specialization fields
offered by the department. The significant trait of the Programme
is the blending of at least one course from section other than that
of specialization, in third and fourth semesters each. This helps
to broaden the knowledge base and the vision of the students.
Research, though a stronghold of the department is offered as
an optional course on the basis of merit and interest because we
believe that RESEARCH IS NOT A MERE FUN. The students who
may not get the chance for the research are offered an advanced

INTRODUCTION
Physics (Greek: physikos) is concerned
with those aspects of nature which can
be understood in a fundamental way in
terms of elementary principles and laws;
formerly called natural philosophy. It
covers the tiniest like quarks in a proton to
the largest like the universe of which our
solar system is a minute part. Its original
aim even covering this huge range is to
understand the structure of the natural
world and explain natural phenomena. It
is the goal of the Department of Physics
to contribute to the understanding and
applications of the fascinating aspects of
nature, and to offer a solid and attractive
curriculum to our young graduates.
The Department of Physics, established
in 1986 was initially situated at old
Campus of the University of Azad
Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffarabad (now
known as city campus of the university).
Subsequently it was shifted to its newly
constructed building at Chehla Bandi
Campus in 2003.

those institutions who had turned the teacher education into a
tool of making money.
The university took it upon itself as a national responsibility to
serve the education by producing graduates who would be well-

The mission of the Institute is to prepare the future generation of scholars in Kashmir
related multi-disciplinary fields. The new courses have been designed for those desiring
on a social science approach to South Asia and Kashmir in particular. The program
offers inter-disciplinary training and exhaustive acquaintance to the history, politics,
international relations, languages, art and design, archeology, economy, culture and
society of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The program is tailored to meet the needs of
individual centering careers, students preparing for entry to M. Phil and doctoral programs and those who want to gain regional expertise. In addition to
the regular curriculum/courses, the experience of the students is enhanced by hosting regular symposia, and lecture series.
These extra-curricular events provide an opening of an innovative and creative learning and also develop deep inter-disciplinary understanding among
the students. We understand that globalization is a fact and Kashmir studies needs to advance linkages with globally inter-connected world. We recognize
that War, violence, and injustice are not inescapable but these can be overwhelmed by bringing a
positive change in attitudes at different levels. Keeping in view the dominant scenario, we have
introduced some modules of Peace Studies in the 4th semester of M.Sc. Program. This program will
be run in collaboration with Peace and Conflict Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (PCS)
Japan. Recently, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tokyo University of
Foreign Studies (PCS) Japan. Under the MoU, both institutions will work jointly to create academic
programs of mutual interest. It is also decided that both parties will start mutual academic and
scientific activities, through the exchange of supervision for student research and any further initiative
towards sharing academic curriculum including the exchange of faculties and students. The Institute
of Kashmir Studies (IKS) is in a process to develop more linkages with different universities of the
academically advanced countries.
At IKS, we have recently started M. Phil program and intend to launch Ph. D program in near future.
It aims to understand and address the root causes of the problems and to seek non-violent ways to
transform conflict and end injustice. The new modules have been structured in a way, which allow

INTRODUCTION
Sociology is the scientific study of society. It covers all aspects of society like human behavior, social institutions, social action, social
change & social problems. Sociologists investigate structure of groups, organizations and societies and the way people interact within
these contexts. Since human behavior is shaped by social factors, subject matter of sociology ranges from intimate family to a hostile mob,
from the division of society on the basis of race, gender and social class to shared beliefs of a common culture and from sociology of social
work to that of sports. In fact, few fields have such relevance and scope for research, theory and application of knowledge.
Sociology provides many distinctive perspectives on
the world, generating new ideas and criticizing old
ones. It also offers a number of research techniques
that can be applied virtually to all aspects of social
life like emotions, family, education, street crimes,
delinquency, war & peace, etc.
Sociology is gaining more and more importance
with the passage of time because society is
becoming more complex and new social problems
are emerging. Trained sociologists are the need of
the hour for maintaining the smooth functioning
of social systems, social life and society.
PROGRAM MISSION
The Department of Sociology and Rural
Development seeks to equip the students with
sociological knowledge to think critically about

Core theme of this discipline is to boost research in the field
of information technology and management sciences in Azad
Jammu & Kashmir, like other regions of Pakistan, and to eradicate
the lack-ness of higher education in the very field. The main goal of
PhD program is that participants carry out educational research,
typically a series of empirical studies, in their own educational
setting, resulting in a PhD thesis and at the end of the program in
a PhD degree. The aim of writing a PhD thesis is to learn how to
independently conduct high quality educational research. Ph.D.

M.Sc ECONOMICS
The Department of Economics offers two year degree programme in Economics. The M.Sc Economics programme includes compulsory courses, optional courses, workshops and conference courses. A research project of 6 credits, practical training, and comprehensive oral examination are compulsory. The M.Sc Programme in Economics is designed to develop both economic reasoning and
constructing and estimating economic models through the use of econometrics and other quantitative techniques. The foundation
for intelligent economic reasoning is laid with courses in Microeconomics and Macroeconomic Theory; Statistics and Econometrics create the foundation for empirical analysis. These skills are then further enhanced through a diverse array of courses. These
courses serve to provide detailed knowledge of specific areas of economics but, equally important, provide additional experience in
economic modelling and econometric estimation. Our objective is for students to complete the programme with the skills to develop
and estimate models designed to address the questions they are faced with in their professional activities.
