3100 block of W. 111th St. Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on November 5, 2016, a vehicle which had just left funeral services at a nearby cemetery was stopped in traffic on the 3100 block of W. 111th St. directly in front of a Chicago Fire House. An off-duty Chicago Firefighter observed the vehicle and notified the driver that they were illegally blocking the fire lane. The occupants exited their vehicle and a verbal and physical altercation ensued. An off-duty Chicago Police Officer was inside a nearby business when he heard the commotion and attempted to assist the Firefighter. As the incident was occurring, a Chicago Police Sergeant driving to work discovered the altercation and observed a male with a firearm in his hand. The Sergeant stopped, exited his vehicle, displayed his weapon and announced his office. As the incident continued to escalate and the offender failed to drop his weapon, shots were fired striking the individual multiple times. The offender was transported to a nearby area hospital where he was pronounced. The offender's weapon was recovered on the scene. Numerous individuals suffered non-life threatening injuries including the off-duty Firefighter and off-duty Police Officer. Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation are being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority with the full cooperation of the CPD. The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
