About me and Career Goals:
As a recent Ecology and Conservation Biology Graduate from Griffith
University I am excited about starting my career within a company or
organisation that has a strong environmental focus. My passion is for
connecting science with individuals as well as organisations and the wider
community; I strongly believe that to form sound environmental policies we
must effectively communicate the science. The more you know the more you
can do!
I came to study a little later than most as I was busy having and raising my
children, however in that time I did not sit idly; for the past 8 years I have been
sole operator of a small hobby business that has seen me succeed in all
aspects of time management, working to briefs, creative design and
production of beautiful work that I can take pride in.
My current plan is to embark on my Masters study in Environment and Applied
Climate Science in 2017 to enable me to direct my career towards Climate
Science and its role in Policymaking. While undertaking my postgraduate
studies I will continue to be involved with my volunteering commitment to the
Gold Coast & Hinterland Environment Council (Gecko) as the work they do is
both educational and incredibly rewarding.
Professional Skill set:
My skill set has grown over the course of my degree with particular focus on:
Communication:
Appropriate scientific communication in the form of conveying concise
and useful information (report writing, EIA key reports, scientific article
formation)
Excellent verbal communication skills developed through numerous
group and individual presentations.
Critical thinking and Problem solving:
Exposure to the complexities of Climate Change Adaptationcompletion of this course with a High Distinction and a strong passion
for tackling complex problems with innovative solutions.
The ability to analyze situations and information to develop new ideas
and determine a successful course of action; this can be evidenced by
the creation and execution of a research project surrounding a big
concept in ecological science. This project saw me independently
design, collect and analyse information with a largely successful result.

Focus:
With 12 months of study in Environmental Planning and Law I have a
strong focus not only on Ecological processes, but also the ability to
understand the complexities of planning, public interest, stakeholder
involvement and the relevant Queensland and New South Wales
legislation; under which we can effect change.
My ability to interpret information thanks to the help from my lecturers
and structured learning which will ultimately lead me towards
successful decision making in a professional setting.
Analysis of ecological data sets and some exposure to GIS analysis
(ArcGIS, ArcMap).
Science Capstone:
This final element of the Bachelor of Science Degree has seen me individually
design and execute a research project around an important aspect of
Ecological science. I elected to conduct research into the extent of invasive
species within Nerang National Park through the survey of transects adjacent
to recreational trails. All aspects of research and analysis were done
independently with some directional input from my supervisor. The specific
skills needed to successfully complete this key subject included:
Research design and presentation of ideas and key elements
Risk assessment for individuals and volunteers in the field
Accurate survey and assessment of both native and non-native flora
(20 hours)
Accurate record keeping
Data analysis in SPSS and interpretation of results
Formation of a scientific article with a broad range of backing research
Development of scientific poster and presentation of main findings.
These skills are in addition to many other personal skills that have only been
enhanced by degree; I feel confident and competent to step into a position
within Environmental Science and be an asset to any team or organization.
