Subject: Math

Grade Level: 3rd-5th/Life Skills

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Date Submitted to MT: 10/25/15

US Initials:
Setting: Small Group

Given a set of manipulatives ranging from 1-15, the students will use
one-to-one correspondence to count aloud the number of items given
or shown, correctly counting aloud four/five times and needing two or
less prompts with 80% accuracy.

D (Determining Criteria)
E (Ending)
IEP OBJECTIVE(S)
By the end of 36 instructional weeks, given direct instruction and access to manipulative objects,
TSW develop a more complete understanding of mathematical concepts demonstrated through the
mastery of the objectives listed to follow at a rate of 7 out of 10.
TEKS STANDARDS
(2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand how
to represent and compare whole numbers, the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers, and
relationships within the numeration system. The student is expected to:
(A) count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects;
(B) read, write, and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or
pictures;
(C) count a set of objects up to at least 20 and demonstrate that the last number said tells the
number of objects in the set regardless of their arrangement or order;
(D) recognize instantly the quantity of a small group of objects in organized and random
arrangements;
(E) generate a set using concrete and pictorial models that represents a number that is more than,
less than, and equal to a given number up to 20;
(F) generate a number that is one more than or one less than another number up to at least 20;
(G) compare sets of objects up to at least 20 in each set using comparative language;
(H) use comparative language to describe two numbers up to 20 presented as written numerals;
and (I) compose and decompose numbers up to 10 with objects and pictures.
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT/TECHNOLOGY
SmartBoard, Goldfish, Domino Numbers worksheet, glue, scissors.
MODIFICATIONS & ACCOMMODATIONS (may include these in each section)
Lengthened time to respond.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL SET
Attention-Getting Strategy Good afternoon everyone! Its time to start our math lesson for
today. We all need to be sitting in our seats and on our pockets for
this lesson, so that we can stay focused. Make sure that you are
staying in your seat please and do not get up without asking! If I ask
a question, please raise your hand and wait until I call on you, so
that everyone can have a turn to think.
Student Objective (By the By the end of this lesson, you will be able to know your numbers a
end of this lesson you will little better and we will also be able to get some more practice in
identifying the numbers of objects and other things!
be able to)
The purpose of this lesson is because it is very important to learn
Purpose of Lesson

how to count things correctly. This isnt something that we need to

know just for school, but we will have to know how to count things in
real life! For example, when I go to work, I have to be able to count
out coins and dollar bills correctly, so that I can give the customers
the right amount of money back! If I wasnt able to count out the
money correctly, the customer would not be very happy that I did not
give the correct amount back to them!
INSTRUCTION
Relate to Prior Knowledge

We have been working on counting for a while now and how to

count our numbers 1-20. Lets watch our video and count out loud
together to refresh our memory. Show Youtube video.
Using Play-doh and small molds, I will demonstrate several
examples of counting out how many things I can create out of
Direct Instruction (incl.
the Play-doh. Im going to make some things out of Play-doh. I
modeling: I do)
wonder how many different bears I can make before I run out. I
made __ bears! How many hearts can I make?
I have some Goldfish today and I would like to share them with you!
However, I can only share the number of fish that you can count. So
the higher that you can go to count the fish, the more you get to eat!
Guided Practice (We do) You may not get as many fish as your neighbor, or you may get
some more. But it is up to you to decide how many you will get! I will
go around the table to each student individually and have them
count out Goldfish.
Now, we are going to do an activity! Raise your hand if you know
what a domino is. Have you ever played a game using dominoes
before? To be able to play with dominoes, we have to be able to look
Independent Practice
at it and know how many dots are on the domino! Today, we are
(You do)
going to look at the domino on our worksheet, count how many dots
are on the domino, and then you will cut and glue the numbers
beside the correct number of dots. Pass out domino worksheet.
What are some things that you have to count outside of school?
Higher Level Questions
CLOSURE (objective restated, link to future learning; incl. students)
Today, we worked some more on our counting skills. We counted out some Goldfish and also
practiced our counting with our Domino worksheet. Lets try our counting one more time. How many
markers does Mrs. Colwell have? Student response. Tomorrow, youre going to continue to practice
on perfecting your counting skills with Mrs. Wagner. Thank you for working so hard today and for
staying on task! Nice job!
LESSON EXTENSION (extend learning deeper)
If time permits, I will have students give me examples of things that they have to count in real life
situations.
ELABORATION (elaborate further)
If time permits, I will use manipulatives from the classroom to show the students how the numbers of
objects relate to one another and can change. For example, I have 5 markers. If I find one more
marker, how many do I have now?
ASSESSMENT (how you will know students learned the information)
I will be able to assess the students in their ability/inability to count numbers 1-20 and then use oneto-one correspondence to count the dots correctly on the worksheet.
