PROMOTING THE VISION: By the Year 2020 more visitors will be attracted to The Bahamas by Bahamian Art,
Culture and Heritage than by merely sun, sand and sea.

SEW N SEWS 2016 QUILT EXHIBITION OPENS NOVEMBER 15, 6pm-9pm

organizer, Orchid Burnside, expressed her
thanks to the quilters for their continued support of the project.
This year's quilt exhibition is lovingly dedicated to Gill Scates, an avid quilter who recently
passed away after a brief illness. Gill was a
founding member of the Sew N' Sews quilting
group and over the years she produced quilts
in all shapes, sizes...and especially colours!

Doongalik Studios is pleased to announce the

Sew N Sews second showing at the gallery
since 2013. Patrons can look forward to another beautiful array of products ranging from
bed quilts, wall hangings, gift items and much
more that demonstrate various quilting styles
and methods.
The exhibition will feature the Christmas
Room once again just in time for the upcoming festive season with holiday-inspired quilts
as well as Christmas tree decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the tree decorations
will be donated to the Art Supply Drive which
annually provides three selected public
schools, including one from the Family Islands, with much-needed art supplies. ASDs

Recently retired from

teaching, Gill was enjoying more time with
her four grandchildren,
whom
she
adored. Needless to
say quilts were being
produced for each
one of them! Group
member, Anne Lever,
stated: Gill will be greatly missed by us
all. Always willing to share her mathematical
skills with fellow quilters, she ensured that
our quilts were all proportionally correct! But more importantly, we will miss her
kind and generous nature, her charm and wit,
and above all, her unconditional friendship. It
is said that friends are like quilts...they give
comfort when needed. That indeed was Gill.
The Exhibition will remain on display until
Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

DOONGALIK COMPLETES 3rd LPIA ART INSTALLATION

Doongalik has just completed the 3rd art installation at the countrys airport featuring the works of
over 70 artists under the theme BAHAMIAN CELEBRATIONS which focuses on the upcoming
festive Christmas/New Years seasons during which Bahamians express their love for Family,
Church and Junkanoo! This iteration will remain on display until January 2017. The featured showcase is a tribute to the late, great fashion designer, Harl Joseph Taylor. The companys superb
straw creation displays under the theme Rays of Light Forever also shine a light on the amazing
work of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society in Abaco who take care of a Bahamian Treasurethe
last functioning hand wound lighthouse IN THE WORLD! If you are travelling this season, please
take the time to view the 5 display showcases in the US Departure Lounge, as well as the 7 wall
cases in the interstatial corridors which lead to the baggage claims area, and support the work of
our talented artists! More information is available on the Doongalik website under LPIA.

Doongalik was unable to produce a Newsletter for

the month of October due to the arrival of the monster HURRICANE MATTHEW in Nassau, which
roared through The Bahamas at Category 3 & 4
strength, and wrought much destruction! Doongalik is
most thankful to have survived with minimal damage,
and reopened for business at the end of October,
along with the Craft Cottage and The Place for Art.
As is to be expected, the gardens suffered the most
damage, but although the landscape has been significantly altered, Mother Nature in all her glory and
strength, is thriving once again!

Due to the Hurricane, the Fly Outside the Lines Official Opening
did not take place, but there are still 2 more days-Mon & Tues,
November 7 & 8, to view the Exhibit at Doongalik, after which
you can visit on the facebook page.please purchase the kite
of your liking in support of the Art Supply Drive Fund!
We are extremely proud to report that
Alistair D. Stevenson of Long Island,
Bahamas, has won the Ministry of
Youth's Award for Arts & Culture this
year! Alistair, who is studying Ceramics
in China, recently held a very successful
ceramics show at Doongalik to assist
with his educational funds, and also hosted the City of Nassau's Creative Nassau
Booth at last year's International Ceramics Show in Jingdezhen, China! CONGRATULATIONS Alistair!

Creative Nassau was recently invited to make a presentation to COBs architecture and fine arts students on Creativity in preparation for the design and construction of the Bahamas Pavilion to be installed at EXPO
2020 in Dubai. President, Pam Burnside, Vice President, Patricia GlintonMeicholas, and Creative Nassau Market Coordinator, Rosemary Hanna,
each delivered power point addresses which focused on the countrys rich
culture, traditions and heritage relating to the clapboard house, colonial
architecture, art, history and community.
