Executive Summary

A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a


defined community for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material,
and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both. A library's collection can
include books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform,
CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, e-books, audiobooks, databases, and other
formats.
The Library is the backbone of the research and development activities of East West University.
The use of library resources is vital for pursuing study and research. It is an integral part of the
University and designed to meet the information, research, and curriculum needs of its students,
faculty and staff members. It has comprehensive collections to meet the needs of its users. The
library's holdings include a diverse collection of print, non-print, and computer resources for all
to use.
The Librarys mission is to enable the staffs and students of East West University to engage
optimally with the ever changing information environment in order to succeed in their research,
learning and teaching goals.

Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Origin of the Assignment:
Assignment is a practical part of academic studies. This is a reflection of academic knowledge
throw practical work experience. Thus this Assignment aims to reflect the academic view of a
real world work environment.
Information Studies and Library management of East West University offers four years BSS
program majoring in different related fields. This four years academic program is the building up
of the theoretical knowledge. Information Studies and Library management is a field of study
that investigates the importance of Information and Library to individual, groups and also in
corporate sector.
Our esteem faculty Mrs. Dilara Begum, Professor, Department of Information Studies and
Library management, East West University asked us to prepare an assignment about Library of
East West University and its Services
1.2 Background of the study :
The background of the study is Library Management and Services of East West University. A
total number of 15 to 20 employees work there. To help the students, to manage the different
sections, to update the library.
1.3 Objective of the study :
This assignment was designed to accomplish two objectives. The objectives were identified
through closer interaction and exchange of views with the Library personnel.
Followings were the objectives of the study:
To know briefly about Library of East West University and their services
To find out the Importance level of Library for Students.
To identify the objective of the library.

1.4 Scope:
As we are the student of Information Studies and Library management of East West University
thats why we have the facility to directly interact with employees and personally we also know
various information about the library.So we have collected the true information.
1.5 Methodology:
Nature of the study: Exploratory
Sources of information: Both primary and secondary information sources were used to
complete this study.
Primary sources: For our primary research, we have mostly used the practical experiences,
knowledge, skills, references of LibraryEmployees and some standard reference sources like

Library Personnel .

Own experience

Secondary sources: Secondary information was collected from the web site of the East West
University library.
1.6 Limitations of the study:
The Librarys mission is to enable the staffs and students of East West University to engage
optimally with the ever changing information environment in order to succeed in their research,
learning and teaching goals. So we need more research but the time constraint confined this
study mostly on the data collected in website. Moreover, it was not possible to get all required
internal information of the library as there is protocol to maintain.
But we were quite successful to collect our main information. So the result was hopefully
satisfactory.

Chapter 2.0 ORGANIZATION


2.1 History of the organization
The idea of establishing a private university to provide quality education at an affordable cost in
Bangladesh was first mooted by a group of prominent academics, business leaders, professionals
and education enthusiasts led by Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin. With this end in view, this group
formed a non-profit, non-political, charitable organization called Progoti Foundation for
Education and Development (PFED). East West University is its first major project. Members of
the Board of Trustees of the University are: Mr. Jalaluddin Ahmed, Mr. S.M. Nousher Ali, Mr.
Farooque B. Chaudhury, Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Mr. Syed Manzur Elahi, Dr. Mohammed
Farashuddin, Mr. Mohammed Zahidul Haque R.Ph., Dr. Saidur Rahman Lasker, Dr. Muhammad
A. Mannan, Professor M. Mosleh-Uddin, Mr. Shelley A. Mubdi, Mr. M.A. Mumin, Dr. Khalil
Rahman, Mr. H.N. Ashequr Rahman and Mrs. Razia Samad. After being accorded permission by
the Government under the Private University Act (Act 34) of 1992, East West University was
launched in 1996. Classes started in September 1996 with 6 faculty members and 20 students in
the campus located at 43 Mohakhali C/A, Dhaka-1212. Today there are over 216 faculty
members and approximately 8914 students enrolled through a process of selection.
Mission:
The primary mission of this institution is to provide tertiary education at a reasonable cost,
characterized by academic excellence in a range of subjects that are particularly relevant to
current and anticipated societal needs. Central to the universitys mission is its intention to
provide students with opportunities, resources and expertise to achieve academic, personal and
career goals within a stimulating and supportive environment

Chapter 3: Library of East West University and Services


3.1 Basic Information
We have been working to develop a set of values that will influence the work of the Library.
We are pleased to announce that:

A library environment that is safe, welcoming, and offers a variety of comfortable spaces
that will inspire learning, research and creativity

Staff that are approachable, helpful, knowledgeable, courteous and take satisfaction in
working for the University Library.

Information sources that are easily accessible, relevant, reliable and of high quality

Books are placed in open stacks for the convenience of users and for consultation. EWU
Library maintains open access shelves to give enough choices to users so that they can select
desired library materials.

All comments/ suggestions from Library users are received, reviewed and take necessary
steps accordingly.

Users purchase suggestions will be receive via online and take into consideration
according to the purchase rules.

Items returned to the Collection will be re-shelved within one working day.

The order of all books on the shelves will be checked to ensure accuracy regularly.

Library controlled systems (e.g. library management system, institutional repository, new
arrival lists, etc.) are available 98% of the time during standard opening hours

No user should wait to be acknowledged for more than 3 minutes to be helped from any
Library front line desk

These values will inform the evaluation of our current services and new ones.

3.2 Vision and Mission


Vision:
Empowering EWUs research and learning community with deep expertise, innovative services,
and outstanding collections, and enabling the staffs and students of East West University to
engage optimally with the ever changing information environment.
Mission:
East West University Library's mission is to support the university community in developing
skills in innovative and analytical thinking in research and in information literacy, and by
providing distinctive collections, services, facilities and programs.

3.3 Objectives

Our objectives are:

To support and facilitate the research, learning, teaching and administrative activities of
the University, by organizing, maintaining and providing access to appropriate literature and
information resources in such a way as to provide optimum benefit for Library users.

To provide an appropriate and comfortable environment, accommodation and facilities


for the use of Library resources.

To support the University emerge as a leading university of the country, embracing


traditional values of higher education but adapted to the global community of the 21st
century.

To identify, acquire, organize, store, and provide on-demand access to the available
intellectual and research products of scholars to support teaching, learning, research and
creative endeavors.

To provide greater access to digital collections while continuing to build and improve
access to collections in all formats to meet the research and teaching needs of the university.

To foster information literacy and work involving the EWU community and to enable
users to think critically, create knowledge, and be life-long learners.

To provide and ensure quality services and good professional practice in library activities.

3.4 Collection Overview


East West University Library's collections encompass a rich and varied universe of printed
volumes, digital resources, maps, media and archival materials. The Library's digital collection
continues to grow at a rapid pace.
Subject Strengths:
The Library has comprehensive collections to meet the needs of its users. The Library provides a
variety of services designed to support students, faculty members, researchers, and staff members
of East West University. The EWU Library develops and maintains extensive print and eresources to support the research, teaching and learning activities of the University. The core
collections encompass subjects in computer, electronic, materials, mechanical, civil and
environmental engineering, mass communication, business, banking and accounting, History,
Literature, humanities, art and design, biological and life sciences, Bangladesh studies etc.
The Library has extensive holdings including print collections (collections are mostly open
access), e-resources collection include ejournals, e-books, and theses, student projects, research
reports, etc. in full text. The information sources are easily accessible, relevant, reliable and of
high quality.

3.5 Library Sections


Acquisition Section:
The Acquisitions Section is responsible for the acquisition of all books, monographs, government
documents and gifts for the EWU Libraries. Acquisitions Section supports the Libraries' staff in
their efforts to acquire and maintain information resources for education and research. There are
generally five steps taken in order to acquire material for a library collection whether physical or
digital.

4. Reporting (fiscal management)
5. Receiving orders
Circulation Section:
The following facilities in Circulation Section are available:
1.

Issuance of text books, audio cassettes, and CD-ROM's.

Issuance and renewal of library membership.

Search corner for online journals and library database.

Reference Section:
Readers often have to consult books and materials, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias,
handbooks, Yearbooks, and the like for data or information. Normally, a reader would not need to
remove such books from the Reading Room. Consequently, these books are never issued to
anyone, but are used in the Library premises and for Photocopy.
Reserve Section
Users are not allowed to borrow books from the Reserve Section, where confined books are
preserved for use in library premise. Users are requested not to move any book from reserve
section to other section.
Newspaper and Journal Section
More than 140 local and foreign journals, magazines, yearbooks, bulletin etc and 18 national
newspapers are displayed in this section. Besides remarkable number of contributory journals
and magazines are available in this section. Information materials of this section cannot be
borrowed. User may read and request the library personnel for photocopy of their required
materials.

East West University Library Is Using Koha & Opac , And My Athens To Maintain The Online
Services For Internal And External Access To The Library System.

Chapter 4 Conclusion
The Library is very important factor for the research and development activities of East West
University. The use of library resources is vital for pursuing study and research. It is an integral
part of the University and designed to meet the information, research, and curriculum needs of its
students, faculty and staff members. Thousands of students are dependent on this library and its
really helping them by providing excellent service as well as advice.
So at last we can say that the EWU library is doing very good job for its students and other
members by giving the opportunity to access thousands of books and e resources. We appreciate
this great job.
