BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES

With the Indian engineering community designing and


building GLOBAL vehicles, the knowledge of Noise,
Vibration and Harshness becomes extremely crucial
for building
g low noise and state-of-the art low cost
automobiles.
Thus, we will require engineers who are specialized in
NVH Evaluation, Development and Control.
With this background , ARAI is planning to start a

This talk will give an overview of noise and vibration
control in cars. Several different classes of p

acoustics, and ancilliary noise and vibration. This will be
an interactive session where members of the audience
can discuss current problems, concerns and issues with
the speakers.

Speaker I: Prof. Michael Brennan


Prof. Brennan holds a personal

is Chairman of the Dynamics
Research Group at the Institute of
Sound and Vibration Research
(ISVR) at the University of
Southampton., U.K.
He has been at the ISVR since 1995 after leaving the

engineer and then as an academic, spanning a total of
23 years. He graduated from the Open University with
1987, received his MSc In Sound and Vibration
Studies in 1991 and his PhD in 1995, both from the
ISVR.
He has a wide-range of interests in acoustics and
vibration including the vibrations of rotating machinery,
non-linear vibrations, vibro acoustics, active and
passive control of sound and vibration, energy
harvesting and biomimetics. Additionally he has been
a consultant for several companies in the UK and
overseas, advising on vibration and acoustic testing
methods, control measures and design.
Michael Brennan currently teaches on the BEng
undergraduate course in Acoustical Engineering, the
MSc course in Sound and Vibration Studies. He has
also designed,

short courses for industry in the UK and abroad. He is
a past President of the European Association of
Structural Dynamics, Associate Editor of the
Transactions of the ASME Journal of Vibration and
Acoustics, Guest Professor at Harbin Engineering
Universityy in China and Visiting

in Brazil.
He has published over 100 papers in peer reviewed
journal and has presented over 140 papers in
international conferences.

Speaker II: Prof. Phil Joseph


Prof. Joseph is a Professor of
Acoustics at the Institute of Sound
and Vibration Research (ISVR) at

He has worked for over 15 years in a
number of acoustically related areas
as Research Fellow, Consultant,
Research Scientist and Lecturer.
His specialist research areas are in fan broadband
noise shallow water acoustics,
noise,
acoustics active noise control,
control
duct acoustics and advanced measurement
techniques.
Phil Joseph has a degree Physics from the University
of York and a Masters degree in Sound and Vibration
from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research
(ISVR). He gained his PhD in 1990 for work on the
active control of sound fields in enclosed spaces. He
then moved to Australia to work on low frequency
active sonar. In 1994 he returned to the ISVR as a
research fellow He was appointed research lecturer in
shallow water acoustics in 1996, senior lecturer in
acoustics in 2002 and was promoted to a personal
chair in 2008. He is a member of the Rolls-Royce
University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Noise
undertaking research into fan noise in aero engines.
He has published more than 40 papers in professional
and academic jjournals and has p
presented more than
70 papers at International conferences. He is a
member of the ESDU Noise Panel on aircraft noise,
associate editor for aero acoustics to the Journal of
Sound and Vibration, a member of the Enterprise Hub
Advisory Council and is on the management
committees of a number of European projects. He has
presented

and India), and has undertaken consultancy for a
number of organisations, most recently: Rolls-Royce,
Exxon, Ministry of Defence and the China department
of ship science.
