If I passed my English Class, I would
If I had passed my English Class, I

Conditional sentences are in two halves
(clauses):
the if part (if clause)

the other part where you can use words

such as can, will, may, might, could
and would (main clause)
There are 4 main types of if sentences in
English, often called conditional sentences.
Zero Conditional
1st Conditional
2nd Conditional
3rd Conditional
What is zero conditional?

The Zero Conditional is formed in this way:

if + Present Simple, Present Simple
Give example of a sentence with zero
conditional.
We use Zero Conditional to describe rules and
situations where one event always follows the
other.
What is 1st Conditional?

The First Conditional is formed in this way:

if + Present Simple, will + infinitive.
We use the First Conditional to talk about
possible future events that depend on other
future events.

ZERO CONDITIONAL is a structure used

for talking about general truths -- things which
always happen under certain conditions (note
that most zero conditional sentences will mean
the same thing if "when" is used instead of
"if"). The zero conditional is used to talk about
things which are always true -- scientific facts,
general truths, and so on.
If you heat water, it boils
If you want to study in the USA, you have to
pass an exam in English.

1st CONDITIONAL is a structure used for

talking about possibilities in the present or in
the future. The first conditional is used to talk
about things which are possible in the present
or the future -- things which may happen.

If you go to the Zoo, you will see the lions.

Give example of a sentence with first

conditional.
Other possible patterns in the First
Conditional:
If we save enough money, we can go on
holiday. can
If you see him, tell him to give me a ring. imperative
What is 2nd Conditional?

2nd CONDITIONAL is a structure used for

talking about unreal situations in the present or
in the future. The second conditional is used to
talk about things which are unreal (not true or

not possible) in the present or the future -things which don't or won't happen.
The second Conditional is formed in this way:
if + Past Simple, would / could / might +
infinitive
Give example of a sentence with second
conditional.

If I had enough money, I would buy a new

car.

We use the Second Conditional:

1. To talk about imagined impossible or
unlikely events in the future.
If I had enough money, I would love to
travel in South Korea. (the sentence refers to
the future)
2. To talk about impossible present situations.
If I were you, I would study more.
What is 3rd Conditional?

3rd CONDITIONAL is a structure used for

talking about unreal situations in the past. The
third conditional is used to talk about things
which DID NOT HAPPEN in the past. If your
native language does not have a similar
construction, you may find this a little strange,
but it can be very useful. It is often used to
express criticism or regret.

The Third Conditional is formed in this way:

if + Past Perfect, would/could/might +
Perfect Infinitive
Give example of sentence with third
conditional.
We use the Third Conditional to talk about
unreal situations in the past and to imagine
things that did not happen.

skiing.
