Airconditioning and Ventilation System

The primary objective of the airconditioning and ventilation system is to achieve an indoor
environment which serve the purpose of providing human comfort zones with respect to
temperature, air movement and indoor air quality, for the people engaged in various
activities within the indoor spaces.
The criteria of the airconditioning and ventilation design in formulating the type of system
are as follows :i.

Functional and operational requirements to be attained.

ii.

Reliability with long continuous service.

iii.

Efficiency with low power consumption.

iv.

Low maintenance.

Briefly, the airconditioning and ventilation system provided are as follows:

i.

Air-cooled split units for offices and electronics based equipment rooms such as
server rooms, computer rooms, library rooms and others. Allocation of split-units
shall be in accordance with Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM)
requirement.

ii.

Non conditioned areas (toilet, stores, etc) shall be mechanically ventilated at an

appropriate air exchange.

The air cooled split units and mechanical ventilation units shall comprises of:
i.

Indoor exposed fan coil unit (ceiling concealed, wall mounted, ceiling mounted or
ceiling cassette)

ii.
Design Brief

Outdoor exposed condensing unit.

Page 3 / 6

iii.

Force mechanical ventilation for toilet, store, switch room, lift motor room, etc.

iv.

The capacity of the air-cooled split units varies according to the required air flow
rate.
For the above purpose, the building design shall allow for the following :(1)

Space for outdoor condensing unit

(2)

Headroom for the ceiling concealed fan call unit and duct work above the
ceiling

The units shall be capable of maintaining a room temperature of 24 0C and 55%

relative humidity.
2.3

Cold Water Plumbing

The water supply piping shall comply to SYABAS requirements and is proposed to be as
follows:
a)

Ductile iron (or equivalent) water pipes for external water reticulation

b)

ABS for internal distribution pipe to fittings

Water tanks shall be of FRP and polytank

The proposed school project has the following types of buildings:

Block Academic

b)

Multipurpose Hall

c)

Canteen

d)

Guard House

e)

House Hold Waste

f)

Roofed Bus Stop

g)

i)

Sub-station

Page 4 / 6

Only the Block Academic shall require suction tanks, booster pump and roof storage
water tanks.
All other buildings shall be provided with water supply directly tapped from the main water
reticulation piping. Storage water tank shall be provided for each building.
The water Storage Tank of each building shall be designed to Store Water for one day
consumption, and complying to meet or exceed SYABAS guidelines.
The estimated water requirement per day for the whole development is 47,400 liter.
Incoming water supply shall be metered for the canteen and other areas which the Client
shall define.

2.4

Sanitary Plumbing
The Sanitary Plumbing System shall be designed to the Local Authority Approval and to
Uniform Building By Law 1985 Sewerage and Drainage by the Law 1957.
(a)

The Sanitary Plumbing Pipes within building servicing toilets shall be of

Ventilated Stack System and consist of discharge stack and vent stack install
side by side. The vent stack shall be connected to water closet, wash basin and
floor trap seals.

(b)

The size of the discharge pipe shall be provided to comply to the discharge unit
values and flow rates of the toilet fittings and complying to BS 5572:1978.

(c)

Sanitary Plumbing Pipe shall be of UPVC to Local Authority Approval UPVC

White to BS 5225 and 4514 for above Ground Pipeworks. UPVC brown to BS
4600 for underground pipeworks from building to inspection chamber.

(d)

Water Discharge pipe from toilet fittings shall run into Inspection Chamber.

(e)

From Inspection Chamber the Toilet Waste Discharge shall be directed via VCP
pipes to external sewer manhole which in turn shall direct the waste to the
Central Sewerage Treatment Plant. VCP Pipe (Vitrified Clay Pipe) shall comply to
MS 1061 : 1986

(f)

Grease Interceptor
Direct discharge of greasy wastewater from canteens, service stations and autorepair shops into the drain lines has significantly increase pollution to server
plants, rivers, lakes and other waterways. As such an adoption of effective waste
effluent pre-treatment is incorporated in this development.
Grease Interceptors will be included in the design of the plumbing system for the
canteen located in Block Academic.

2.5

Rain Water Harvesting Internal Piping

The piping system taps from rain water harvesting tank and supply to all garden tap.
The supply piping shall comply with SYABAS requirements and is proposed to be ABS or
polybutylene for distribution pipe to fittings.
