Introduction & Location Tour

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today was an introduction to Duncans business and how

he operates within his home studio. I was given the chance
to ask questions about his work, as well as discuss my
intentions and ideas of my design, and the needs and
requirements for me during this experience.

Clients fittings and sample collection

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today I went to my internship on a Saturday, as Duncan

had a client for measurements and sizing. I got there before
his client to discuss what will occur during the fitting, why
and how. In the afternoon, we worked on his sample
collection, allowing me to sew boning in the bodice,
learning to use an industrial sewing machine.

Internship outcome:
Even though I will not be including boning into my project,
this allows me to understand the concept of boning and
developing a fitted dress that I can then relate to my future
work.

Task:

Learning techniques and sourcing project ideas.

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Duncan and I discussed my final design concept in more

depth, as well as confirming my assessment task.
Whilst he was showing me techniques on the industrial
machine, I was taught how to make buttons for a bridal
dress he is creating, using his button maker.

Project sourcing and ideas

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today, Duncan and I discusses ideas of my project, helping

my come to a decision on my fabric choice.
Duncan provided me with other fabric samples that he
would suggest me test, as well as gave me the idea and
requirements to use a stretchy fabric, for the suitability and
appropriateness of my idea.

Skills and knowledge

Duncan asked me to assist and observe today, as he was

progressing some of the sample pieces we have been
working on, into a photo shoot to supply for his website.
I took a sense of the way he would like the dresses to be
seen, and photographed.

Task:

Gathering ideas for my project

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

From the meeting with Belinda, Duncan and I developed

further sketches.
I got the understanding that a more structured design would
place too much stress on the tailor, whilst a less structured
design would be challenging during the pattern making
process, however the need is evident.

Task:

Sample collection and experimentation

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today during my internship, I observed Duncan sewing the

seams of one of his clients dresses. He also gave me an
insight into various other seams, hems and stitches that can
(Maximum 100 words) be used on an industrial sewing machine, using various
fabric compositions.

Internship outcome:
I will need to experiment with different fabrics, as well as
the finishes (seams, hems and stitches) for the research into
my end product.

Task:

Pattern making of toile

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today was the commencement of my dress

pattern. Duncan guided me in using the drape
method to assist in the pattern making process.
I was aware that I must use the mannequin to
develop the desired shape of my dress,
however the most challenging decisions were
creating one dress to transform into the other.

Task:

Sewing of toile

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today I cut out the toile design and sewed it together on an

industrial sewing machine. I learnt how to use an industrial
sewing machine, to sew my toile, and then tested my
design. I have not been exposed to much pattern making,
and this was definitely a skill that I wanted to explore
during my internship.

design, before making the final product. This design was
difficult to explore as my brief highlighted the concept of a
transformable dress, creating different styles out of the one
dress was challenging during the pattern making process.

Task:

Pattern alterations of toile

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

After developing the toile, this highlighted the areas of my

project that I needed to rethink. Such as developing a dress
using fabric with more density, as the toile fabric was too
light, with very little drape. I also learnt how to modify a
pattern, when you want a thicker waistband (then you make
the pattern thicker), and making the top ties thinner (you
change the shape of that pattern piece).

Modifying the waistband:

garment from scratch. I will use this concept during future

projects of my own, as well as assisting my skills with my
future textiles class when they develop their own designs.
The drape method is easy to visualise the final product,
however modifications are necessary to develop a
successful design.

Task:

Clients initial consultation and start of final product

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Observing an initial consultation is very similar to

designing your own garment. They had inspiration pictures
as to what they like, and wanted their designs to
incorporate, whilst also their ideas on colours and fabrics.
Duncan provided very practical opinions as to why using a
certain fabric would be beneficial rather than another. The
ladies was very willing to hear his ideas and methods.
I started cutting out my fabric for my final design and
sewing the skirt of the dress design.

with their ideas and design. Duncans tips during the

Using my toile and pattern, I cut out my final product,
using the polyester stretch crepe. I then was able to start
sewing the skirt of my design.

Task:

Finalising the dress.

Skills and knowledge

acquired:

Today I finished the final product, including fusing my

waistband, sewing my skirt and top ties to my waistband,
overlocking the hem, as well as top ties. I again used the
industrial sewing machine that reflects a more professional
and neat finish, as well as using the overlocker for seams
and hems.

How might this activity During the sewing, I was aware of how much time a
impact on the
garment can take, from the development of a pattern and

toile, and sewing the final product.
Initially I put alot more time into the pattern making, as this
was necessary for my design project, and developing a
dress that met all the design constraints and criteria.
Now I understand that the background and research of the
garment is more important than the actual garment
development.
