Teaching Tips: Fraction Circles

You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your
non-commercial classroom and home use.
Learning about fractions requires a good deal of repetition engaging in fun activities is a good
way to make this repetition motivating!
This activity will be very effective for a small group of students to play, after they have been
introduced to the idea of a fraction of a group.
Give students a number of pins (pegs) - or they could roll a dice to determine a number. They
take this number of pins/pegs and distribute them evenly around the circle. Trial and error will
take place to determine which fraction circle best suits the number. Students may find that the
number cannot be divided equally on the circle - let them discover this for themselves.
Once distributed, students can record their findings on the recording sheet. Recording all the
information from the card would be an ineffective use of time, so ask students to record a random
sampling from their activity - perhaps one or two facts from each card.
