Why use Stop Collars?

The importance of using stop collars is directly linked with the importance of centralisation
itself:

he pipe off the bore wall, reduce drag and hit Total Depth first time
Keep the
Obtain a good cement job and a good zonal isolation
Reduce differential sticking on RIH
Easier fluid flow and good well clean out
Reduce casing sag and protect the casing
Aid pipe rotation
Help pass through milled windows

To
o maximise cementing operations results, consideration should be given to:

Using the correct centraliser for the well section

Using the recommended number of centralisers
Correct centraliser spacing

To achieve the correct spacing, stop collars are absol

absolutely necessary below are the main three
spacing patterns* used and recommended by Centek, which can NOT be obtained without the use of
stop collars:
1 / joint

2 / joint

3 / 2 joints

*Note: recommendations are based on a 40 ft. joint length; dimensions are taken from Pin End;
heaviest part of the joint needing support Box End; stop collars are aprox. 5 either side of the
centraliser.
...and this is an example of how, in real life we
wells,
lls, operators can experience casing sag (24 m. / 2
joints of unsupported pipe) and/or get poor returns on investment (2 centralisers divided and
supporting the same coupling) by not using stop collars:

A key element of the Centek Stop Collar is iits high axial load capability; allll Centek Stop Collars
are heat treated to improve tensile strength, especially in the critical internal thread area. This
combined with high tensile set screws of a specific thread pitch to match the low profile
characteristics of the product mean that when tightened to 35lb/ft give a vastly superior holding
force when compared to others. With these properties, and the ccorrect
orrect installation, the stripping of
threads has been eliminated. Installation is achieved simply by sliding on over the pin
p end, and
diametrically torquing
ing the set screws. Using the Centek Stop Collar and this method of installation
will ensure maximum grip
rip and high holding force.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR STOP COLLARS

The function of the Stop Collar within the borehole is considered as important as the
Centraliser itself and the subsequent Cementation. Therefore, it is strongly advised to use
proper equipment and installation methods.
Centek Stop Collars are supplied wi
with
th Cup Point Socket Head Set Screws which are
M12 dia. x 1.5 mm. pitch thread with 6 mm
mm. A/F female hex socket. Depth of socket on 8 &
10 mm. long screws is ca 0.2..
Centek supplied screws are specially selected for thread form and pitch
commensurate with design and axial holding loads the use of non Centek supplied
s
screws
is not permitted!
CLEARANCE OF STOP COLLARS EITHER SIDE OF A CENTRALISER
Should centraliser be fully compressed against the pipe,, the developed length must
not be greater than the distance
tance between inner edges of the stop collars.
Centek recommends approximately 5 clearance on both sides of the centraliser
towards the inner edges of both stop collars.
CORRECT SEQUENCE OF TIGHTENING
It is necessary to ensure uniform drive in of the screws so that the stop collar is
centered on the pipe.. Common practice is to drive the screws in all round with a very low
torque, establishing central to pipe condition, then apply final torque in a suggested
sugge
radial
sequence:
