The Days of the Week, their Planets, and the

Chakras:
Some Traditional Systems
The Days of the week are named for the Gods of the various planets; where the English days
evoke the Norse deities, we have included the French names to show their better-known Roman
equivalents. (Thus, Tiw equates with Mars, Woden with Mercury, Thor with Jupiter, and Freya
with Venus.)
SUNDAY -- SUN-DAY
MONDAY -- MOON-DAY
TUESDAY -- TIW'S-DAY (MARS-DAY; Mardi in French)
WEDNESDAY -- WODEN'S-DAY (MERCURY-DAY; Mercredi in French)
THURSDAY -- THOR'S-DAY (JUPITER or JOVE-DAY; Jeudi in French)
FRIDAY -- FREYA-DAY (VENUS-DAY; Vendredi in French)
SATURDAY -- SATURN-DAY
But the regular order of the planets is Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth (and Moon), Mars, Jupiter, and
Saturn, or traditionally, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Why then do the
weekdays evoke the planets in a different order, viz. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus,
Saturn?
If we array the planets in their traditional order -- Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn -- at seven equidistant points around a circle's perimeter and then inscribe within the
circle a heptagram or seven-pointed star connecting the various planets, we find that tracing the
heptagram connects the planets in the order of the days of the week: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury,
Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and back to Sun.
Now let's place the planets in their traditional order running down seven chakras in the body:
MOON -- BROW
MERCURY -- THROAT
VENUS -- HEART
SUN -- SOLAR PLEXUS
MARS -- NAVEL
JUPITER -- SEX
SATURN -- BASE
In The Grail Restored: Rorian Astrology, the Original Zodiac and Planetary Double Helix we
explore and correct this pattern as the basis for the Rorian Tradition, but that is not our purpose
now. Instead, let's take the order as given here and trace a perfect zigzag pattern connecting the
various planets in their weekday sequence. Beginning with the Sun in the Solar Plexus, we move

up three chakras to the Moon, then down four chakras to Mars, then up three chakras to Mercury,
then down four to Jupiter, then up three to Venus, then down four to Saturn, then up three back to
the Sun, where we began. With the exception of the Sun -- which stands alone at the center point
and divides the chakras into an upper triad and a lower triad -- every planet pairs with another
planet four chakras below: Moon (top of upper triad) with Mars (top of lower triad), Mercury
(middle of top triad) with Jupiter (middle of lower triad), and Venus (bottom of upper triad) with
Saturn (bottom of lower triad).
The planets and chakras also focus the Theosophists' kingdoms of nature and Planes as follows:
MOON -- BROW -- COUNCIL and MONADIC PLANE
MERCURY -- THROAT -- SHAMBHALLA and ATMIC PLANE
VENUS -- HEART -- HIERARCHY and BUDDHIC PLANE
SUN -- SOLAR PLEXUS -- HUMAN and CAUSAL PLANE
MARS -- NAVEL -- ANIMAL and MENTAL PLANE
JUPITER -- SEX -- VEGETABLE and ASTRAL PLANE
SATURN -- BASE -- MINERAL and PHYSICAL PLANE
(See also The Nine Chakras and the Nine Castes for more on the chakras and their Kingdoms.)
The (Sun) Moon-Mars, Mercury-Jupiter, Venus-Saturn weekday zigzag pattern thus serves to
link the similar planets of the upper and lower triads -- which we may call simply Heaven, or the
Upper World, and Earth, or the Lower World. The pattern stitches Heaven and Earth together, by
linking the Council with the Animal Kingdom, Shambhalla with the Vegetable Kingdom, and the
Hierarchy with the Mineral Kingdom. The Humans stand alone. We may take all this to mean
that like minerals, the Hierarchy serve as the firm foundation of Heaven; that like vegetation,
Shambhalla is the exuberant growth of Heaven, and that like animals, the Council see and move
freely through the various dimensions of Heaven. Humans stand as the link between Heaven and
Earth.
The Vedic Seers took this zigzag Upper World - Lower World linkage a step further: First (as we
noted in The One Monad and the Twelve Atmic Demiurges) they assigned twelve Adityas or
Demiurges to the twelve signs, thus:
(T-E Cancer) Orange-Yellow SAGE DAKSHA -- BROW & COUNCIL -- Yellow CREATOR
BRAHMA (T-E Leo)
(T-E Gemini) Orange MAGE VARUNA -- THROAT & SHAMBHALLA -- Yellow-Green
ENCHANTER SHAKRA (T-E Virgo)
(T-E Taurus) Red-Orange DIVINER AMSA -- HEART & HIERARCHY -- Green CLERIC
SAVITRI (T-E Libra)
(Spring Equinox -- SOLAR PLEXUS & HUMAN -- Fall Equinox)
(T-E Aries) Red HUNTER RUDRA -- NAVEL & ANIMAL -- Green-Blue FOWLER
VIVASWAT (T-E Scorpio)
(T-E Pisces) Violet-Red FORESTER MITRA -- SEX & VEGTABLE -- Blue PLANTER INDRA
(T-E Sagittarius)

(T-E Aquarius) Violet SMITH BHAGA -- BASE & MINERAL -- Blue-Violet MASON
TWASHTRI (T-E Capricorn)
(Please note we are using the Rorian Tradition's Taurus-Equinox or T-E Calendar, beginning the
Spring Equinox with 0 Taurus.)
Precisely as we saw above with the planets (omitting now the central solar plexus), the Seers
then linked or paired the Adityas three signs apart and serving the same function in the Upper
and Lower Worlds:
Leo's BRAHMA (later VISHNU) and Scorpio's VIVASWAT uphold the cosmic law and the law
of man respectively;
Virgo's SHAKRA and Sagittarius' INDRA (or PUSHAN) represent outer security and the
nourishment of inner security respectively;
Libra's SAVITRI and Capricorn's TWASHTRI vivify magic weapons and craft them
respectively;
Taurus' AMSA and Aquarius' BHAGA represent the gods' given share (e.g. the tithe) and the
inherited share respectively;
Gemini's VARUNA and Pisces' MITRA bind man with the gods and link man with man
respectively;
Cancer's DAKSHA and Aries' RUDRA (or ARYAMAN) represent the rules of ritual skill and the
rules of noble chivalry respectively.
Furthermore, the first six Adityas -- Leo's BRAHMA/VISHNU, Virgo's SHAKRA, Libra's
SAVITRI, Scorpio's VIVASWAT, Sagittarius' INDRA/PUSHAN, and Capricorn's TWASHTRI -were termed the Six Minor Sovereign Principles, and these govern the waning half of the year,
from Summer Solstice and T-E Leo, through Fall Equinox to T-E Capricorn and Winter Solstice.
The last six Adityas -- Aquarius' BHAGA, Pisces' MITRA, Aries' RUDRA/ARYAMAN, Taurus'
AMSA, Gemini's VARUNA, and Cancer's DAKHSA -- were termed the Six Major Sovereign
Principles, and these govern the waxing half of the year, from Winter Solstice and T-E Aquarius
through Spring Equinox to T-E Cancer and Summer Solstice.
(For more on this traditional pairing of the Adityas of the Upper ("the other") world and the
Lower ("this") world, please see Alain Danielou's The Gods of India, New York: Inner Traditions
International Ltd., 1985, p. 113 ff.)
Finally, as an alternative pattern, we may take the Heptagram or Weekday order of the Planets
and assign them in order running down through the chakras and Theosophical Planes thus:
SUN -- CROWN and LOGOIC PLANE
MOON -- BROW and MONADIC PLANE
MARS -- THROAT and ATMIC PLANE
MERCURY -- HEART and BUDDHIC PLANE
JUPITER -- NAVEL and MENTAL PLANE
VENUS -- SEX and ASTRAL PLANE
SATURN -- BASE and PHYSICAL PLANE

This pattern has enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the world, as evidenced by the traditional
identification of the Sun with the Logos, the similarity of Moon and Monad, Theosophists'
assigning Mars's Red Ray of Will to the Atmic Plane, Hindus' calling Mercury Buddhi, the West's
labelling the pubic bone the Mons Veneris, or "Mount of Venus" and calling sexual disorders
"Venereal diseases," and Saturn's melancholic humor's being cold and dry, like Earth. It also
forms the basis of Edward Tarabilda's self-published work, "The Legacy of Psycho-BioCosmosis," wherein he consistently outlines the paths of spiritual development proper to each
planet in the following order (or its inverse):
SUN -- SURYA YOGA: Path of Integration
MOON -- BHAKTI YOGA: Path of the "Heart"
MARS -- LAYA YOGA: Path of the Will and the Warrior
MERCURY -- JNANA YOGA: Path of Pure Intellect
JUPITER -- KARMA YOGA: Path of Sefless Service and Giving
VENUS -- RAJA YOGA: Path of Beauty and Art
SATURN -- Hatha Yoga: Path of Physical Enculturation
