OVERVIEW
Mobile Print adds additional user functionality to an existing Lexmark Print Management (LPM) System:
1.

2.

3.

Lexmark Mobile Printing application support on iOS and Android mobile devices
o View/print/delete documents and print jobs in a users queue on Lexmark Print Management.
o View quota in a users queue on Lexmark Print Management.
o Allow delegate printing from a users queue on Lexmark Print Management.
o Send documents to Lexmark Print Management for conversion and future printing.
See Supported File Formats in this document.
Email document submissions
o Allows a user to send an email to an account monitored by the Lexmark Email Watcher. When a
new email arrives, it is sent to Lexmark Print Management where it is converted to a printable
document based on the predefined conversion settings and any user-specified settings. It can
then be printed immediately to the printer specified by the user or it can be integrated with
Lexmark Print Management and printed by the user at a later time.
TM
AirPrint document submissions
o Allows a user with Mac OS X (10.7 or later) or Apple iOS (6.1 or later) to send documents to
Lexmark Print Management. iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Mac users can send documents
wirelessly to Lexmark Print Management to be printed by the user at a later time.

This document details the configuration of the Lexmark Print Management Mobile Print Software.

REQUIREMENTS
SERVER SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
The tomcat/application servers that are expected to handle document conversions are all of the
tomcat/application servers behind a Lexmark Print Management Load Balancer that get document conversion
jobs. In the following illustration (Figure 1), the document conversion tomcat/application servers are noted in red
dashed outlines.

Figure 1: Examples of Lexmark Print Management System configurations

The first Lexmark Print Management System on the left in Figure 1 is a small to medium system that handles
document conversion on the same tomcat/application servers that also handle print saves and releases. This type
of system configuration should be used if there are low to medium-low volumes of document conversions. If a
customer will have a medium to large number of conversions, the Lexmark Print Management System
configuration on the right in Figure 1 should be used. This type of system can be specifically scaled for document
conversions without impacting the performance of print saves and releases.

Lexmark & Lexmark Partner Internal Use Only

Page 5

Print save and release servers can be scaled without impacting document conversion performance. This document
does not cover how to shape network traffic. Please refer to your hardware / software load balancer
documentation on how to direct all of the:
/mobile/*
HTTPS/HTTP traffic to specific Lexmark Print Management Load Balancers. The system on the right in Figure 1 has
a drawback that the Lexmark Print Management sub-systems are independent of each other. Each of the sub-
systems has their own LMC and system configurations. Do not access the LMC through the hardware / software
load balancer because you will be unsure of which sub-system your browser is routed. Use the address of each
sub-systems load balancer for LMC steps later in this document, if this type of system configuration is used.
By default, a document conversion server only handles three documents at a time. See Troubleshooting in this
document for information about how to change this default. Any documents other than PDF and TIFF images are
converted to a printable format, PDF-A. PDF and TIFF documents are not converted, so very little server
processing power is used for these file types. For a list of supported document types, see Supported File Formats
in this document.

LICENSE
The Lexmark Print Management System must have a Software Client license. This can be checked in the Lexmark
Management Console (LMC) -> System tab -> Licenses.

If the BSS.LDD.Client license is not present or has expired, please contact Lexmark.

MAIL SERVER
If the email submission functionality is used, the email server that hosts the account to be monitored by Lexmark
Print Management must support one of the following protocols:

IMAP4
POP3

SUPPORTED PRINTERS
Any network, PostScript-capable printer is supported as an output device. In addition, any Lexmark printer that
supports PDF will produce the best and fastest output.
Advanced finishing options such as staple and hole punch will only work on Lexmark printers. Due to vendor-
specific implementation, duplexing options may not work on non-Lexmark printers.

MOBILE PRINT SOLUTION INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION

To add the solution and related components, select the mobile submission options desired during the LPM
installation process. Refer to the LPM Installation Guide for more information about installing LPM and Mobile
Print.
Before installing LPM, it is recommend that you install document conversion software on each tomcat/application
server that is expected to handle document conversion so that the installer can configure LPM to use it
automatically. You may add it later and configure the property files manually.
The following table details supported document conversion applications and versions thereof:

Standard Mode requires the printer to be

specified as defined in the Device ID field.

All Print Release options require the LDAP
and Print Release settings to be
configured. If set to Internal Users Only,
only users existing in LDAP will be allowed
to print.

If set to Guest Support and the user is not
found in LDAP, the solution will function as
if in Standard Mode for that email.

If set to Guest Support 2, the Device ID is
first checked to see if it corresponds to a
printer nickname. If so, the print job is
sent directly to that printer. If not, this
operates as if in Internal Users Only mode.
(This requires Device to Printer IP Lookup
be set to Lexmark Database.)
If using printer nicknames, select Lexmark
Database. If the user will just use the
IP/Hostname of the printer, select Direct
IP Printing.
This is the where the printer nickname or
IP address will be located in the subject of
the email that is sent by the user. Print
options can only be used when the device
id is the first word of the subject or
message body.
If using Direct IP Printing, select the format
that will be accepted by ALL printers that
can be used with this solution.
If emails should only be processed if sent
from certain domains, enter the comma-
separated list. If none are specified, all
emails will be processed. If one or more
are specified, any email that comes from a
domain not listed will be discarded.
This controls the default operation of
printing the message body. The user can
modify this setting when sending the
email if Yes or No is selected.

NOTE: When releasing email submitted
jobs using the mobile device, this setting
should be set to No or Never in order to
print the first attachment, otherwise only
the body will be printed and not the
attachment.

Page 14

CONVERSION SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

To enable the conversion of the supported document types, the following must be done on each of the Lexmark
Print Management tomcat/application servers that are expected to handle document conversions. See Server
System Requirements for document conversion server information.

.NET FRAMEWORK
Starting from Mobile Print 2.5.2 and when using Microsoft Office for document conversion, .NET Framework 4 is
part of mobile installation to allow the interaction between Lexmark Print Management and any of the conversion
applications.
1.

For Windows 2003 Server, the Windows Imaging Component (WIC) must be installed before .NET
Framework 4 can be installed and document conversion requires .NET Framework 4 to work properly.
a. If .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is already installed on the machine, WIC is not required for installing
.NET Framework 4.

INSTALL OPENOFFICE, LIBREOFFICE, OR MS OFFICE

A supported Office application must be installed so that Document conversion can be performed. See Server
System Requirements for details on supported Office applications and versions thereof. These steps are required
and must be performed on all of the document conversion tomcat/application servers.
If using OpenOffice or LibreOffice:
1.
2.
3.

4.

Download Apache Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/download/) or LibreOffice.

During the Install Wizard, be sure to select Install this Application for Anyone who uses this computer (all
users).
Choose the typical install to accept the default install path and to install all the applications. If you choose
the custom install path, all main office applications should be installed; the optional components can be
installed at your discretion.
If Open Office or LibreOffice is installed after installing Mobile Print Software
a. Stop Lexmark Solutions Application Server service.
b. Set the officeToPDF.defaultOfficeHomeDirectory property in
%SOLUTIONS_INSTALL_DIR%\apps\wf-ldss\WEB-INF\classes\OpenOfficeToPDFClass.properties
to the location where Open Office or LibreOffice is installed. For a typical LibreOffice 4.0 install
this would normally be C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice 4. Please make sure that there is no
trailing slash. Also, all backslashes in the path should be replaced with forward slashes.
c. Restart Lexmark Solutions Application Server service.
d. Update the Conversion Method setting in mobileprint solution to use the appropriate converter.

Lexmark & Lexmark Partner Internal Use Only

Page 15

If using MS Office:
1.
2.

3.

4.
5.

6.

Follow the appropriate instructions for obtaining and installing MS Office. During installation, be sure to
select Install this Application for Anyone who uses this computer (all users).
Choose the typical install to accept the default install path and to install all the applications. If you choose
the custom install path, all main office applications should be installed; the optional components can be
installed at your discretion.
Create a directory named Desktop under C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\. If you are
using a 64 bit O/S, you also have to create a Desktop folder under
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\.
If you are using Microsoft Office 2007, install the Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS add-in.
If you are going to use MS Office, then additional configuration is needed to successfully convert Excel
documents (*.xls and .xlsx).
a. Run the createLsasUser.bat file in the %SOLUTIONS_INSTALL_DIR%\lpm\msoffice folder. You
have to pass in a username and password when calling this batch file. This creates a User account
with administrative privileges that is required in the next step. Also, make sure that the
command prompt session is run as administrator.
b. Log into the newly created account to get Windows to create the necessary folders for that user
profile. While you are logged into this account, open one of the Office components (Word or
Excel) and complete the Office setup process. This usually involves setting Privacy and Update
options.
c. Change the Lexmark Solution Application Server service to run as this user and restart the
service.
If you install MS Office after installing Mobile Print, then
a. Follow steps 1 through 5.
b. Stop Lexmark Solutions Application Server service.
c. Set the officeConv.execName property in %SOLUTIONS_INSTALL_DIR%\apps\wf-ldss\WEB-
INF\classes\ MsOfficeDocConvClass.properties to use the right executable. If using MS Office
2007 set it to MsOffice2007DocConverter.exe. If using MS Office 2010, then set it to
MsOffice2010DocConverter.exe. If using MS Office 2013, then set it to
MsOffice2013DocConverter.exe.
d. Restart Lexmark Solutions Application Server service.
e. Update the Conversion Method setting in mobileprint solution to use the appropriate converter.

You must install the same document conversion application on each tomcat/application server; you may not use
different document conversion applications on different servers.
NOTE: Refer to the Trouble Shooting section of this document for more information related to sing Microsoft
Office.

ADD LEXMARK PRINT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO A LEXMARK MOBILE PRINTING

APPLICATION
Once the mobile print software is installed on all of the document conversion servers (see Server System
Requirements), the mobile solution is loaded and configured in the LMC, mobile IP addresses or subnets have been
Lexmark & Lexmark Partner Internal Use Only

Page 16

added to the Mobile Print groups Client Profiles in the LMC Software Client Groups tab, and the servers are all set
Online, then the Lexmark Print Management System can be added to the Lexmark Mobile Printing Application on
mobile devices.
1.
2.

3.
4.

Start the Lexmark Mobile Printing Application on a mobile device.

Add [address_of_load_balancer]/mobile.

If Lexmark Print Management has a hardware/software load balancer in front of several Lexmark Print
Management sub-systems, enter the hardware/software load balancer address. See Server System
Requirements.

Login with your LDAP or Active Directory username and pw depending on the LDAP configuration used in
Mobile Print Software Installation.
You can view and release jobs in your Lexmark Print Management queue and start submitting documents
into Lexmark Print Management for conversion and release.

HOW TO TEST IF MOBILE PRINT SOFTWARE IS ACTIVE WITHOUT A MOBILE DEVICE

Part of the Mobile Print Software install is the Mobile Proxy Service. The service is used by the Lexmark Mobile
Printing application on mobile devices to communicate with Lexmark Print Management. Its default install
directory is %ProgramFiles%\Lexmark\Solutions\apps\mobile.
1.
2.
3.
4.

Open a browser.
Enter https://[ address_of_load_balancer]/mobile/rest/info.
Accept the self-signed certificate from the Lexmark Print Management System.
You should see something like the following in your browser view if the service is running successfully:

CONFIGURING THE EMAIL WATCHER

The Lexmark Email Watcher is installed on the Load Balancer during Lexmark Print Management installation if the
email component was checked.
Lexmark Email Watcher is a Windows service that can be seen in the Windows Services Control Panel Applet.
Lexmark Email Watcher is not started during the Lexmark Print Management Load Balancer installation process
since the service needs to be configured before it is started. Any time a configuration change is made to this
service; it must be restarted for the change to take effect. Also, set the services Startup Type to Automatic, so the
service will start after reboots.

The Email Watcher is installed to the base Lexmark Solutions folder chosen when the Load Balancer was installed;
by default, this location is %ProgramFiles%\Lexmark\Solutions\EmailWatcher. The configuration
file is called config_EmailWatcher.properties and is located in a subfolder called conf. An
example properties is installed and contains example properties. Some of the properties are commented out and
some are not in the file yet. Add the necessary properties needed for your email server. The available settings are

The default is 60 seconds.
Specifies if extra logging should be written to the
log file. Only use if troubleshooting an issue as the
amount of data being logged can slow down the
processing.

NOTE: The Lexmark Email Watcher must be restarted if any changes are made to the configuration file. The
changes do not take effect until the service is restarted.
NOTE: When troubleshooting, the log files are located in .\EmailWatcher\logs. The
emailwatcher.log will have the most useful information. This is where the extra logging appears when the
configuration file sets debug on.
NOTE: To enable even more logging, open the .\EmailWatcher\conf\l4j_EmailWatcher.xml file.
Go to the bottom of the file and change the level value for com.lexmark.tis.tools.emailwatcher
and javax.mail to debug. This requires a restart of the Lexmark Email Watcher Service to take effect. Be
sure to set back to info once the issue has been resolved.

CONFIGURING PRINTER MAPPINGS

Printer Nicknames map between a user friendly nickname entered by the admin and a devices IP address. When
configured, they allow users to use the nickname instead of the IP address when submitting jobs. If Printer
Nicknames are not being used, this section can be skipped. If Printer Nicknames are being used, a web-based
utility is provided to do the mappings. When the Print Management Client was installed, a link was created on the
desktop. It can be reached from any desktop using Internet Explorer by entering the following:
http://<address_of_load_balancer>:9780/printrelease
Log in using the same userid and password as used for the LMC.

USER EMAIL PRINT OPTIONS

When the user submits an email, there are several options that can be sent along with the printer address or
nickname that controls the output. The print options can only be used if Device ID is to First Word of Subject;
the options would be specified after the device id. The following options are available:
Option Name

Duplex

/d

Hole Punch

/h

No Attachments

/na

No Body

/nb

Notes
The # indicates the number of copies; if the user
specifies a value greater than the Print Max Copies
specified in the solution settings, the max value will
be used instead.
This forces the document to be printed in duplex.
This option may not work with some non-Lexmark
printers.
This enables hole punch feature to be used if the
printer has a finisher that can do hole punching;
otherwise, it has no effect. This option will not work
with non-Lexmark printers.
This only prints the message body; all attachments
will be ignored. This setting has no effect if the
solution setting Print Attachments is set to Always.
This skips the message body and only prints the
attachments in the email. This setting has no effect
if the solution setting Print Body is set to Always.
This forces the document to be printed single-sided.
This setting has no effect if the solution setting Print

Page 25

AirPrint functionality is enabled during Lexmark Print Management installation if the AirPrint component was
checked.

CONFIGURATION PORTAL
The configuration portal can be reached at the following URL:
http://<address_of_load_balancer>:9780/lpm/config
Log in using the same userid and password as used for the LMC.
See the Lexmark Print Management Configuration Portal whitepaper for details about the configuration portal.

DISCOVERY
UNICAST
See the Lexmark Print Management DNS Whitepaper for details about the configuration of a Microsoft DNS
server, or Bind for Windows DNS Server, to perform AirPrint advertisement and service discovery for the Lexmark
Print Management solution.

MULTICAST
Bonjour service is installed and started by default. To begin advertising LPM via Bonjour service, it needs to be
registered by checking the Enable Bonjour discovery on the General tab of the Configuration Portal.

PRINT MANAGEMENT PORTAL

Jobs submitted via AirPrint will be listed as IPP Print in the Site column in the Print Management portal on the Print
Queue tab.

TROUBLESHOOTING
ACTIVE MQ CONSOLE
The ActiveMQ console is a web interface to view the state of the ActiveMQ queue for jobs submitted via AirPrint,
and can be useful for troubleshooting print jobs that dont make it to the Print Release queue (e.g. unsuccessful
file conversion during job processing). The ActiveMQ console can be accessed at the following URL:
http://<address_of_load_balancer>:8161/admin/
If no login ID has been configured, the following credentials are enabled by default:
username:
password:

admin
admin

Note: The console may be disabled by default. Below are the steps to enable the web console:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Open activemq.xml (<installed_server_path>\ActiveMQ\conf) in a text editor.

Uncomment the line, toward the end of the file, about "import resource". For example, change it from
<!--<import resource="jetty.xml"/>--> to <import resource="jetty.xml"/>
Restart the ActiveQ service.
Restart lpm-portal webapp (via tomcat management console) or restart the tomcat service.

IMPORTANT LOG FILES

If an issue occurs with mobile device submissions or email job issues, the following log files are valuable for
troubleshooting. The log files exist on each of the document conversion servers except for the Email Watcher log
file. The logging level is set to WARN by default. You can change it to DEBUG by updating the log4j-config.groovy
in apps\lpm\WEB-INF\classes and apps\idm\WEB-INF\classes.

LOG FILES FROM AIRPRINT JOBS

These log files contain processing information from jobs submitted via AirPrint. idm.log and lpm.log reside on
the Tomcat servers. activemq.log resides on the load balancer.
.\Lexmark\Solutions\tomcat\logs\idm.log
.\Lexmark\Solutions\tomcat\logs\lpm.log
.\Lexmark\Solutions\ActiveMQ\data\activemq.log
You may also look into the database. For jobs in the pending status, you can connect to the QUEUED_PRINT_JOB
table in the solutionInfo database and look for the Job_State_Reason column.

SOME DOCUMENTS ARE NOT CONVERTING

The supported office applications (OpenOffice, LibreOffice and MS Office) do not convert some documents at all,
or only partially convert some of the original documents content into a PDF file. Documents with SmartArt or
external image/content references may experience these issues. For mobile users who submit documents directly
(not using email) to Lexmark Print Management, there is no feedback that the document did not convert, except
that the document does not appear in the users mobile queue view or the Print Release Admin Portal.
To determine whether this is a limitation of the office application you are using, open the originally submitted
document directly in the appropriate office application and export it to type PDF-A. If a document conversion error
occurs, please submit a field escalation with the original document file and the log files noted in Important Log
files, so the issue can be investigated.

INCREASE OR DECREASE NUMBER OF DOCUMENTS THAT CAN BE CONCURRENTLY

CONVERTED ON SERVERS
By default, a document conversion server only handles three documents at a time. Using a higher number of
concurrent conversions may make conversions unstable. This is a limitation of the third party software that is used
for conversions, but here are the steps to modify this server property.
On each of the document conversion servers:
1.

Open the %ProgramFiles%\Lexmark\Solutions\apps\wf-ldss\WEB-

INF\classes\OpenOfficeToPDFClass.properties file in a text editor with Administrator privileges.
The path above may be different for your installation.

2.

Change the officeToPDF.maxInstances value and save your changes.

3.
4.

Values of 1 - 5 seem OK. Going above 5 is risky.

Save your changes.
Stop and restart the Lexmark Solutions Applications Server service.

USER CANNOT ADD AN LPM SYSTEM TO A LEXMARK MOBILE PRINTING APPLICATION

This is usually caused by one or more of the following configurations not being correct:
1.

2.

3.
4.

Make sure you are entering the LPM System address in the Mobile Printing Application in the right
format.
a. See Add Lexmark Print Management System to a Lexmark Mobile Printing Application.
Make sure the Lexmark Print Management Servers are Online.
a. LMC -> System tab -> select System Status in the System list -> check all of the servers -> select
the Set Online button.
b. See Mobile Print Software Installation.
Make sure you have installed the Mobile Print .solution file.
a. See Mobile Print .Solution Installation and Configuration.
Make sure you have added all IP addresses and subnets to the Mobile Print Software Client Group in
the LMC.
a. See Software Solution Group.

USER CANNOT AUTHENTICATE FROM LEXMARK MOBILE PRINTING APPLICATION

Usually this happens if the LDAP or Active Directory information was entered incorrectly in the Mobile Print
installer UI.
Prior to LPM v2.4, LDAP information was in a property file. LPM v2.4 and higher uses this information from the
mobile solution. Select the mobile solution from the Solutions tab in the LMC. Verify the LDAP settings are
correct.
NOTE: Solution settings are cached for performance reasons so changes to the settings may not be available
immediately. Caching intervals are 2 - 5 minutes and are not configurable.

MOBILE PROXY SERVICE IS NOT ACCESSING THE PRINT RELEASE DATABASE

This can be fixed by editing the mobile proxy services LDDMobilePrintReleaseproduction.properties file. The service can be configured to use either a SOLUTIONINFO database in the
built-in Firebird database or in a MS SQL database.
On each of the document conversion servers:
1.

2.

Open the %ProgramFiles%\Lexmark\Solutions\apps\mobile\WEB-INF\classes\LDDMobilePrintRelease-

production.properties file in a text editor with Administrator privileges.
The path above may be different for your installation.
Correct the following properties in this file according the customers LDAP or Active Directory:
lddMobile.db.url

MOBILE DEVICES CANNOT RELEASE DOCUMENTS

NOTE: Solution settings are cached for performance reasons so changes to the settings may not be available
immediately. Caching intervals are 2 - 5 minutes and are not configurable.
The print release directory needs to be configured the same in the:
1.

2.

PrintReleasev2 solutions settings

a. LMC -> Solutions tab -> select PrintReleasev2 in Solutions list -> select Configuration in the Tasks
list -> edit Directory for Print Jobs, Username for Print Job Directory, and Password for Print
Job Directory -> click Apply.

ONLY BODY TEXT PRINTS WHEN RELEASING AN EMAIL SUBMITTED JOB WITH
ATTACHMENTS USING A MOBILE DEVICE
This may be caused when the Mobile Solution is configured to print the body of the email. When releasing email
submitted jobs using the Mobile Device you may observe that only the body of the email is printed (or no pages at
all in the case of an empty body). To disable email body processing, set the Print Body property in the Mobile
Solution Settings to No or Never. This will allow you to release the first attachment in the email submitted job.
This is a limitation unique to Mobile devices and all pages (including the body of the email) can be printed when
releasing the job using the eSF app.

ACTIVEMQ SERVICE WILL NOT START

ActiveMQ may not start or remain started if another application on the load balancer server also uses any of the
ports listed below. Identify what software is using that port and remove it or change the port.
Port used by ActiveMQ:
-
-

8161 (web portal)

61616 (queue port and the port jms broker listens on)

EXCEPTION IN OPENOFFICETPPDFCLASS. OPENOFFICE MANAGER IS NOT INITIALIZED

When submitting an email to LPM mobile printing, it does not work and you see the following error message in the
LMC:
Exception In Openofficetppdfclass. Openoffice Manager Is Not Initialized
You may see that in the task manager the Openoffice Process is running.
This often occurs if the document conversion software was added after LPM was installed. You will need to
configure the properties files manually.

WORD HANGS WHILE CONVERTING MOBILE SUBMITTED JOBS

If you install Microsoft Office 32 bit on Windows Server 64 bit, you may notice that Word hangs and must be
stopped via task manager. Below are the steps that should address this issue.
Run Component Services for 32 bit (mmc comexp.msc /32)
