Project Text Exercise 1 Carol Video Summary and Analysis
The film Carol takes place in New York City during the 1950s or 60s, close to the
winter holidays. The protagonists of the movie are Carol Aird and Therese Belivet. Carol is a
mother and the wife of Harge Aird , she is also known to smoke when distressed. Therese Belivet
is an employee of the toys department in a department store, and has a hobby of photography.
She is also the girlfriend or fiancee of Richard Semco. The movies plot first starts with Therese
working at her job and then she meets Carol. Carol was looking for a present for her daugher and
therese happened to be the at the register at the time. When Carol left, Therese noticed that she
forgot her gloves, she then mails it back to theriese. As thanks Carol invited Therese for dinner at
a restaurant. Carol and Therese formed a relationship which eventually causes conflict in their
own personal relationships. When Carol invites Therese to her home her husband, Harge, comes
home. This event then leads to the divorce of Carol and Harge, and their daughter doesn't even
know that her parents are divorced. Teres eventually breaks up with Richard, to be with Carol,
and they decide to go on a road trip out west. During their trip Carol is fighting a custody battle
with her ex-husband. Carol and Therese on their trip met Tommy Tucker, an old time college
friend of Therese. Therese and Carol had sexual interactions with one another one knight during
their trip, unfortunately Tommy recorded their actions via wall taping. He turned out to be a spy
sent by Harge, most likely to gain some evidence to use against her in the custody battle. Carol
then leaves Therese and sends Abby, Carol's ex-girlfriend, in order to bring her home. Therese's

then gets a job as a photographer for the New York Times. Carol then gives Harge custody over
their daughter, but on the condition that she can visit her. Carol and Therese then can continue
their happy relationship with one another.
Overall the movie was good. The hints of relationship between Carol and Therese are
hinted at but not explicit until the end. The Character building was mostly focused on Carol and
Therese. There were several conflicts that keeped the plot moving forward. The main conflict
seems to be Carol and Theress relationship potentially conflicting with their established
relationships. Other conflicts that could be argued are, Carols concern for the well being of her
daughter because of the divorce and Thereses self doubt and inability to resist or say no.
