VISION STATEMENT

Every teacher needs to be a model of compassion and excellent work ethic for
every student. That is why my goal for each school year, when I become a teacher, will be
to enrich every student that walks through my door. My goal as a teacher will be to create
a safe place for every student to learn, and to ensure that all students have their academic
needs met. A teacher must be not only empathetic to the needs of each student, but also
passionate about their job and understand that they work for their students.
According to the Texas Educators Code of Ethics, an educator must never
exclude a student from participation in a program, deny or grant them benefits on the
basis of race, gender, color, disability, national origin, religion, family status, or sexual
orientation (Educators). I whole-heartedly believe this, because no child should be left
out of anything no matter what. A teacher should make every lesson plan with each
student in mind. The goal of teachers should be for their students to learn more than they
knew at the beginning of the year, and to close the achievement gap (Kagan). The
achievement gap is a crisis as mentioned by Kagan in Kagan Cooperative Learning, and
it deals with the drop out rate of the economically challenged students, as well as the
minority students (Kagan). With the United States being one of the wealthiest countries in
the world, we rate a meager twenty-four out of the entire world (Kagan). I find this
appalling, and there needs to be something done about this. No matter what economic
background, race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion a student is in my class, they will
be treated with the same respect as their classmate. In addition, I will ensure that every
students learning style is met, and that they are comfortable in my classroom.
According to the Learner-Centered Proficiencies, the teacher should model
respectful behavior and effectively manage the learning environment so that optimal

learning occurs (Learner-Centered). I will be using this in my future classroom, because

everyone develops differently, and what works for a couple students may not work for all.
In addition, students should take responsibility for their own learning, and students must
start to understand themselves as learners (Learner-Centered). Without the help of an
effective teacher, students would not be able to meet their potential, and I will be a
teacher that helps them achieve their goal. As a teacher, I will hold students accountable
to the goals that they set for themselves.
I would love to teach elementary school of any grade level, because I really
believe in enriching the minds of young children and watching them grow in the short
time that I will have them in my classroom. My classroom will be set up with ample
physical environment techniques to guarantee academic success for my students. I will
group the students in teams of four based on their academic level (Jensen). I think that
grouping students is essential for language building, especially since I want to teach to be
an English as a Second Language, or ESL, teacher. Students that are not proficient in
English need to be exposed to the language in a constructive way, and incorporating
Kagan structures such as Pairs Compare and RallyCoach would only help the students in
the long run (Kagan). Another environmental element I would use in my classroom
would be plenty of natural light, because as stated in Teaching with the Brain in Mind
exposure to adequate sunlight decreases the production of melatonin in the brain, which
is a neurotransmitter that can cause sleepiness (Jensen). I want my students to be more
alert when I am teaching a new lesson, so if I can do anything to improve their alertness I
will. Lastly, I will make sure that the temperature in my classroom is at the comfort zone,
sixty-eight to seventy-two degrees Fahrenheit, to make sure my students are alert

(Jensen). I want my students to flourish in my classroom, so providing them with a

physical environment that supports their success is extremely important.
I believe it is important to always be the best you can be, and I expect nothing less
from my future students. I will do everything in my power to give them the best
opportunity to learn and grow in my classroom, and I will stop at nothing for them to
achieve that goal. Teachers are the foundation for the future of our children, and I am
beyond honored to have chosen this as my life mission.
